More Mars picsMore images of Mars from Mars Express, courtesy of the German Space Agency
Of interest is this one picture, which shows the Spirit Rover landed in an area that is green
and a tip of the hat to the what color is mars debate, with this image comparison
-
A Final Picture
we have this picture of the rover platform as seen from earth and on mars. with a distinct color shift noted.

Re:Now they know
I'm not sure how many people are going to understand the 19.5/Richard Hoagland references...I'm somewhat embarrased by the fact that I did.
:)
From the Tinfoil Hat Master himself...
I've listened to too much late-night radio trying to fall asleep over the years... -
Re:Taking bets nowI think this pictures clearly prove that Mars is made of bread crust.
Seriously, I can't wait to hear latest serious "analyses" from Mission Enterprise and Mars-News.de

red skies vs blue skiesThis controversy has been seen earlier on SlashDot in this story on the Blue Skies of Mars.
The questions are, of course,
- if there is a tinted color light source, what would the color target display on a normal color target? What would it show via the camera with the tinted light source
- The sun is the same light source on mars as it is on earth, therefore it should be easy enough to take a solar spectrum and see what the degree of tinting is.
- With an atmosphere at 1% or less of the earth, the spectrum could nearly be the same spectrum as in a vacuum
- if the spectrums are essentially similar, then the color targets should be the same, say as on earth or in vacuum, given a clear day without dust and clouds, etc.
- Of course, there is also the matter of the end result of different photo filters getting mis interpreted. However, JPL has published some pictures with red skies, and some with blue skies, as this item from the tin foil hat crowd. This has contributed to the controversy.
So it looks like this particular annoyance has been around for a while.

Re:Conspiracy theorists
Dont discount them so quickly! I was listening to Art Bell the other night, and Art had Richard C. Hoagland on as his guest.
For those of you that don't know, Richard C. Hoagland was once the "science advisor" to Walter Kronkite! He is extremely credible.
Well, on his site, Enterprise Mission, he does some detailed analysis of the photos and makes a very compelling case that there are actual pieces of machinery visible in the photos that Spirit's Pan Cam has sent back.
The unwillingness of the /. community to accept extreme possibilities despite overwhelming evidence is something I'll never understand. Open your mind, guys. -
Now, to find the machinery just a few feet away!
If you look on Enterprise Mission web site, you can see what those rocks really are. Hopefully, someone will get the guts to take a closer look and prove that there was INTELLIGENT life on Mars before some sort of catastrophe.

Re:The Martian Sky is butterscotch, not blue
Take a look at http://www.enterprisemission.com/colors.htm Although the website is somewhat conspiricy theorist minded. especially check out the "Raleigh scattered" bluish limb of Mars! here, here and with a red duststorm in action the raleigh scattered limb becomes..... GREEN!
And see the original viking image compared to the color corrected one showing more natural colors. -

Re:Why is the sky red?
I'll admit that i often look at the conspiracy sites with something not unlike amusement, but as far as the 'red skies of Mars' go, i was quite intrigued by this site.
-
Re:Why is the sky red?
You're sure? Not green? (Gotta love conspiracy sites...)
-
Re:Conspiracy Theroy anyone?
I don't think you're being paranoid at all. Consider the repeated failure of satellites as they approach the "Cydonia complex" (face on Mars and other distinctly artificial looking surface features).
Yes, I recommend that you go check out the Enterprise Mission. Richard Hoagland has been bravely standing up to NASA for years now by trying to get them to admit that the failures of Mars missions are due to Martian technology as well as pressuring NASA to stop supressing evidence of a Martian civilization.

Tampere also have an anti-gravity deviceTampere University is also the place which claimed to discover an anti-gravity effect. Make of that what you will, but extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has actually seen the IO2 device in person, not just heresay from the founder.
There's some strange things being said, eg: "But if you see it, and even accounting for all the issues surrounding it being a hand-built prototype, you will be amazed." What issues surround a hand-built prototype? So the wiring is on veroboard rather than PCB. So the case looks a little utilitarian. So there's no setup program and there's wires going everywhere. So what. If it works as claimed, then it's amazing, regardless of the build-quality. If it doesn't work as claimed, then it's not because it's hand-built - it's because its bunkum.

I say let
Richard C. Hoagland of the Enterprise Mission and Art Bell decide where to take the photographs. If there's really something there, great. If not, then they'll have to shut up.
-
I hope they land
somewhere near the "face" on Mars so that we can finally shut up Richard Hoagland
....or prove him right. -
Plagiarism? This is someone else's idea!
This is old news that has already been reported on 7/19/2000 by Richard Hogland, Michael Bara, Efrain Palermo and Jill England of The Enterprise Mission. There is also a pdf file here.
These people have been at this a LONG time before this new "scientist" came out with this "great discovery". Geeeeshhh -

Not new!
Over 2 years ago Richard C. Hoagland was on Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell and sad discovered this very thing after looking through images that came back from our mars explorer.
Enterprise Mission
So not only is echelon real, not it's confirmed that RCH was right all along. Starts to make these conspiracy shows a little more credible doesn't it? -
Icon of the Space Age
Pioneer 10's mission continues. Let's not forget the plaque that Pioneer 10 carries. It was world famous when the probe was launched, because it was mankind's first attempt to communicate beyond the solar system. Carl Sagan designed the plaque to be universally (in the truest sense) comprehensible, at least to any civilization sufficiently advanced to capture it. Next to the map of the probe's origin relative to our galaxy, with its key in binary notation, was an etching of a generic man and woman, superimposed on an outline of Pioneer to give a sense of scale. The man's arm was raised in a gesture that Sagan hoped would suggest friendship. Especially given the public's then-new awareness of threats to humanity's survival as a species, there was something very poignant about this cosmic message in a bottle that had no chance of being seen by anyone for millions of years.
I remember a newspaper cartoon from the day. A man in a business suit and a woman in a dress were looking at the plaque on Pioneer, which was half buried in the ground. The man said to the woman, "They seem very similar to us, except that they don't wear clothes." -
Re:Why Failure?
My timing on that suggestion was really not far off.
Tonight (Tonight being 24-25th Jan) on Coast to Coast AM Richard suggested we contact
the Whitehouse regarding Promethius and show our support for it.
A new article: 01/24/03 - President Set to "Steal Fire From the Gods" ...?
up on enterprisemission.com today/yesterday.
(server seems down at the moment?)
As Bush must have made some kind of anouncement regarding a nuclear space ship.
I guess Richard is asking for the public's help email/writing
to get Promethius going. If there is support then it will be a go. -
Why Failure?
What NASA really needs is an Open Source Hyper Dimensional Model Space Craft.
;o)
Maybe they can ask Richard Hoagland or Art Bell (retired, I guess I mean George Noory) for help? -

That's just the cover story. What really happened was that the Mars Orbiter carried a nuclear warhead and was sent to destroy the famous face.

Re:The Hall of Records and wood in the PyramidI was poking around for information about The Great Pyramid and the robot, and found a site that
covered some of the purported secret digging
at the Pyramid. Interestingly, the site was
by Richard C. Hoagland (of Art Bell fame) at
http://www.enterprisemission.com/pyramid.html
However, in some sort of grassy-knoll/tinfoil-hat/Illuminati conspiracy, the photos were gone (gone, I say!), but they
can be found at
http://www.trumtrum.se/Pages/pyramid.html -
Moon mission
Maybe while they're at it they can also confirm that the moon is littered with ruins. Rumor has it that the reason why we haven't gone back is because there are ruins there from someone else. If it's true it may very well tie in with the "glass worms" on mars.

Not so mysterious perhaps...Always remember, our government's scientists are very good. Don't believe it when you hear lame excuses, like the "english to metric" explanation being spouted concerning the failed Mars Climate Orbiter. There's much more to the story than a "measurement unit discrepancy".
Perhaps NASA does have a theory to explain the anomalies in the flight paths of Pioneer 10 & 11, but it's classified?
This is just the tip of the iceberg. But go ahead and believe what you want, hell - believe what the government scientists tell you. I won't.
-
From the fringeOf course, elements from the fringe have been arguing there is/has been water there for ages. It seems that it is only now the the official scientists are starting to say "well, there could be", or even "look at our new discovery."
Examples of how strange this get are seen here. Ignoring the junk science nonsense, the pictures are interesting. If you scroll about halfway down, there is one mars photo, conveniently linked to the nasa archive, that looks for all the world like an actual sea shore. So much so it is startling.
Of course, the real scientists are taking their sweet time coming to any conclusions (insert plausible reason here), which is driving the hobbyists and others right up a wall.

Re:sea level riseWhy does everyone say 'the end of the last ice age'? We are still in the middle of an ice age that just happens to be in a slight recession.
Unfortunately, the periodic elements usually cite as contributing to an Ice Age usually vary over tens of thousands of years, not Millions. Check out thies graphs on Orbital eccentricity, Axis Tilt, and Precession of the Equinoxes. There is a Composite Graph as well.
End result is that we do knot know what actually causes the Ice Ages; these variations seem to be operating at the wrong time scale. More realistic factors include Plate tectonics (the forming of Panama as a link block off the Pacific from the Atlantic) - Solar activity also indicates global warming on Mars, which would indicate that the sun is slowly warming up.
All of which puts the nature and duration of the current "warm period" into confusion.
But then, I find pictures like this of Mars fascinating, since it looks so much like standing water, when this is of course impossible. I don't know what to make of it. Damn good illusion, if nothing else

Explanation of Asteroid Belt
One neat thing about the info released today is that it supports what Richard Hoagland has been saying for months. See pictures here and here.
At his website you can find out how this validates the theory that Mars was once the satellite of the planet that formed the asteroid belt when it broke up for unknown reasons. (The pattern of water is indicative of tidal action.) -

Re:Why this model is important
On a separate, but slightly related angle, there was a paper released a couple months back (see CNN Story) that came to the conclusion that something very weird happened in the Solar system about 65 million years ago. Studies of ocean sediment patterns reveal that the earth has been going through a 400,000 year climate cycle that is directly related to planetary distance. The problem is that these patterns change at about 65 million years ago. This is obviously related to the asteriod thast knocked of the dinosaurs.
Fringe groups have been looking at this and speculated that this is when the asteroids were formed, and when mars got its weird pattern of craters that cover only half the planet. You can download a nicely done 60 page document of this sort of thing (PDF - HTML). Unfortunately, the authors like to occasionally bring in things that are not relevant, so it sort of ruins the flavor, but it is not bad, and interesting reading, even if you do not take it seriously.
Which of course goes brings up all kinds of interesting speculations on just how common are planetary collisions in the first place.

Re:more statsStill, I'm not sure how a rocky planet could form with those two monsters nearby; it's the "far away from the star" in the WP article that confused me.
Consider that it has an year that is 3 years long. This would put it where we have the asteroid belt now, roughly. I suspect that Jupiter could be in closer without causing too much of a problem for us.

Which of course goes to the question in orbital mechanics of how close can you have a gas giant before it messes things up.

Re:This has been around for 50+ years
did you even bother reading the information contained on either of the links that were provided?
if you truly read and absorbed all the information on both sites, i doubt you would be as sure of yourself that this person is full of shit... and if you did read that info and still think that he is full of shit, why is that? you failed to mention why there is no possibility of intelligent life outside of earth... to my way of thinking, the statistics alone make it something worth considering, i mean come on, how many planets are there out there?
i tend to think that the proof of the existence of intelligent non-earth based life lies in the ridiculous science that NASA tries to throw at the public because "hell, they won't know that we are pulling this out of our ass" NASA thinks that by posting an official 'scientific' statement about something defines it as Bible truth, and the public never thinks to say "hey, maybe NASA has their science screwed up, we should double check this stuff to make sure that they know what they are talking about"
take for example the most recent 'face on mars' pictures... somehow, in some crazy alternate realm, NASA thinks that the MOLA imaging system can somehow possibly give concrete evidence that the face is nothing more than a natural lump of rock when MOLA's ability to capture details of landforms is a factor of 100 or more times WORSE than the Mars Global Surveyor's camera's, not to mention that its resolution is only about 3x better than the original Viking pictures of the face (which by the way are 30 years old!!)
i really do wonder who is smoking what kind of 'cigarette'...
anyhow, here's the science to backup my claims - Goldin is full of crap -
This has been around for 50+ years
I apologize in advance if this post is not grammatically correct and if anything is not spelled properly, I wrote it in kind of a hurry..
This type of effect IS accounted for by physics, only not the physics that is taught in every school in the world....
I'll try to keep this short, for further info, read the entirety of the paper that I'm going to link to at the bottom of this post...
It turns out (i may be slightly wrong on some of my info here, but i think for the most part i got it right) that a guy by the name of Oliver Heaviside (and another guy named William Gibbs) hacked a massive chunk away from Maxwell's original equations that described electro-dynamic effects. (you don't believe me? go find an original (pre-1873) copy of Maxwell's 'Treatise' and surprise surprise, the four equations that are commonly known as 'Maxwell's Equations' will NOT be there....
Heaviside viewed quaternions as an 'abomination' and considered them 'too mystical' so he axed over 200 of them from Maxwell's original work, so it actually turns out that the four surviving 'classic' equations that have Maxwell's name on them are in all actuality 'Heaviside's Equations' as they NEVER appeared in any original paper by Maxwell.
Anyhow, in 1919 a guy by the name of Theodr Kaluza introduced a fifth (spatial) dimension to Einstein's theories, which unified Einstein's theory of gravity with Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation (showing how gravity and light are fundamentally mathmatically unified)
Since Einstein used time as the fourth dimension, Kaluza's fifth was actually the same spacial dimension as 4-space designations used by Maxwell (and others) over 50 years earlier....
however, short-sighted scientists would not believe something that seemingly could never be experimentally proven (the reason for the lack of proof lies in the fact that this new dimension had somehow collapsed to the Planck length - 10^-33 cm)
sorry, this post has gone on longer than i intended it too, if you are interested in a much better explanation of this, check the paper at the following link...
http://www.enterprisemission.com/hyper1.html
the government knows full well of the existence of this effect, in fact they've been studying and experimenting with these theories ever since they first got their grubby little hands on alien technology way back at Roswell...
you need more proof that this is going on in the government? http://www.disclosureproject.org
that should be all the proof you need, assuming of course that you are open-minded enough to listen to what those people are saying...
I have a little theory about how this extra spatial dimension ties in with human consciousness, but i'll leave that for another post

Old News from the fringeSome of the fringe sites have been talking about this since july 2000
Of Course, being the fringe, they have alot of other weird things as well.
The way I look at it, when you turn up the sensitivity on the radar, you tend to get more noise along with extra advanced warning.
It comes with the territory.
