Re:real guitar adapter
Have you ever seen what those tuners do when you hit more than one string at a time?
There are midi guitars/pickups out there, but they're pretty rare.

Anyway, I actually play a little guitar, and I still loved guitar hero. If I wanted to play a real guitar, I would. You might as well ask why people play driving games when there's a real car in their garage. -
Re:Is this a good thing?
Will they agree with you, or think you are a kook?
Maybe both. Effective protest requires audacity and boldness. It requires not worrying whether people think you are a kook. Inevitably some will.
But more importantly, you will get attention for the issue.
Terrorism and violence do tend to hurt a cause, but nothing of that sort is going on here. -

Ha!
The Blak logo looks like the old Tab logo. Compare "a" in the Blak logo to the "a" in the Tab logo.
http://home.epix.net/~tjwagner/tab.html
Note that the capital "b" in Blak does not look anything like the "b" in Tab.
My mom was addicted to Tab. When they relaunched the drink with a combination of saccharin and aspartame my mom totally disapproved of it. "You might as well be drinking Diet Coke."
There is no accounting for taste. As for myself, I actually prefer Diet Coke with Lime. And Diet Mountain Dew, while not something I would drink all the time, is a godsend at finals time. Ultra-caffeinated. No carbs. Rock.
Oh yeah, nothing is going to ever beat the Japanese on iced coffee beverages. UCC Coffee has ownage over anything made in the US. I'll try this but I doubt they can beat UCC.

Re:ID in the classroomWell, wherever you end up religiously, I would discourage you from taking the Gospel of Thomas too seriously.
(1) From a "source" standpoint, it was found hundreds of miles and a hundred or so years removed from the life of Christ. Link here. The original translator of the GoT, Bruce Metzger, said that the Jesus in the GoT does not resemble in any way the Jesus of the four Gospels. (Can't find the link to his quote; here is a different Metzger quote on the topic. All of which means that Thomas stands over against Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; even if we were to take a hard line on the sources for the synoptics, that still leaves us with a very early Q and John as local, recent sources and Thomas as a distant, late source of the life of Christ. Not very impressive.
(2) The Gospel of Thomas has become popular in our time because of the resurgence of Gnosticism -- Elaine Pagels leads the charge, along with popularizations like The Matrix series. However, if one is going to consider Gnosticism as an alternative belief scheme, it would be worth considering *why* Gnosticism was considered heterodox early on:
- It places an extremely dark view on the physical world and physical bodies of people, considering them sinful.
- It has an extremely harsh system of salvation: only those with sufficient "enlightenment" to escape the flesh can be saved. The rest of the ignoramuses are toast. Oh, and enlightenment is predestined.
- It creates a hugely fanciful system of gods and "demiurges" to explain the creation of the world.
In short, Gnosticism is not exactly a rational response to whatever flaws one sees in Christianity. Being a Christian myself, I would encourage you to branch out theologically and read the Reformers... :-) -

back in 1970
At the end of Little House Zappa makes some quick replies to a heckler in the crowd. The guy shouts something like "Take off that fucking uniform before it's too late!" (possibly talking to a security guard that can be heard trying to get people to get back in their seats), and Frank replies "Everybody in this room is wearing a uniform, don't kid yourself". The heckler continues shouting, and eventually Zappa just says "You'll hurt your throat. Stop it."

Re:Huh?"I use an incredible device called the Pod XT that makes life very easy for recording, noodling around, or juicing up the amp. "
I just looked at the Pod XT page...very interesting. It shows MIDI in/out, but, also USB port on it. Have you used this to connect to a Linux box running ardour? I'm just a beginner guitar, but like playing around with the idea of recording, and have been looking at open source sequencers and music tools.
Could you expand on what you've done/tried with the Pod XT? I'm really looking for something to quickly hook my guitar into my computer...
Other music software:
- Rosegarden
- Hydrogen Drum sequencer
- Ardour: Digital Audio Workstation
- Audacity Sound Editor
- JACK Audio connection kit (Low latency)
- ZynAddSubFX Software synthesizer
Anyway, these are a few of the things I'm looking at, but, just having a hard way to find to get a guitar into my computer without expensive MIDI connectors and pickups...
Any insight here if the Pod could be used or if you have links or experience with this would be greatly appreciated!!

Re:Actually, they get 72 white raisins, not virgin
AFAIK, Arabic did not exist as a language at the time of Mohammed. The prophet spoke Syraic.
The original Koran would have been recorded in the language of the prophet (in the legendary haphazard order). The Arabic Koran is a translation of this original document. AFAIK, the original Koran was lost. I could be wrong, of course.
The problem confronting the Koran in this context is the same as is faced by the readers of the Gospel of Thomas - the only extant version is in Coptic, which was a translation from Greek. Can an English translation be faithful to the original Greek? Christianity and Judism are both well acquainted with the perils of (mis)translation.
I read the Dawood translation of the Koran some years ago. The points made by Luxenberg, especially regarding the chilled versus boiling water, seem to be much more reasonable than what I saw printed. I would love to read an English translation of the German text.

Big Whoop!Midi guitars have been around for a long time; the grateful dead were by no means innovators in that area. Although adapters which mount on a regular guitar are common/normal, in the 80s some companies seemed to think it was necessary to design bizarre spacey/futuristic-looking looking midi guitars (I cannot find a pic of these, unfortunately), but if you remember being in the 80s and seeing a terribly ugly guitar with a big handle connecting the top of the body with the headstock, that was a midi guitar.
I don't know how much the technology has improved since those times (I have been away from music stuff for a while), but up to the early 90s midi guitars suffered from delay (lag, to most of you and me) and weren't 100% reliable in reading notes/conversion to data.
I can see digital guitars being a great innovation. Many people don't realize how heavily music recording now relies on digital equipment; the days of giant reels of tape are already ancient history (expect for those artists who specifically seek out specialty studios which use analog equipment).

Bill Gates eludes custard pie man!!.
This story states that Bill gates is on the run once again from the Belgian Custard Pie Hurler 'Noel Godin', the famous practical joker who has gotten the MS boss before.
More on the first Attack can be found here.
Ol' Billy now seems to be overly cautious now each time he is forced to visit Belgium.

Re:Stick with Naturally Speaking
Another idea, if he's goign to stick with Naturally Speaking, is to use a text-to-braille converter (assuming he can read braille) for the training sessions.
Here is a link to a page that discusses some of those braille output technologies.
Hope this helps--Turkey
