Re:demo please?I can just imagine a waxed cardboard toy pad with a motor driven lifter for the erase
.Why not just shake it?
It's close to being price-competitive with the old classic too. Once the immediate geek fuss fades, I'd say that's where its niche will be found.

This has been done before!

Re:But Flickr is hackable
When I was ten, to reboot the computer you held it upside down over your head and shook it. Oh wait, that was 'Etch-a-Sketch'. Holy crap, how times have changed!

wait a minute
this isn't new. this tech has been around for years.

Re:It was smallerPowerBook was smaller than the competing portables. It set the standard for what a good notebook is
It was the exact same size as the red box from OHIO ART
Come to think of it, both revolutionary graphics units consisted of only white screens with black lines in 1992! -
The Secret
I know how they make these: it's with this!

Remember these?

etch-a-sketch?
Oh come on i've been 'storing data' on these "LCD sized harddrives" things for years. But shaking it side-to-side like they are suggesting just erases the data... at least its a quick format
:)

Re:Nothing really new there...
Just like an Etch-a-Sketch

Re:Sounds FunI get disgusted by the fanns everywhere (especially since the one in my laptop makes an awful amount of noise sometimes and still doesn't prevent the beast from overheating and shutting down). Aside from being noisy, computers have way more CPU power than I need, and cost more than I am willing to spend. And they suck up a lot of power. (Some might add that they take a lot of space.
How about this instead? -
Re:God...Here's the only reliable model that I know of...

It works for Etch-A-Sketch
I remember seeing on TV a while ago a story about Etch-A-Sketch. Talk about the "tried and true." Apparently, the company has stuck with this sole product forever and makes a boat load of money with it.
That's not to say, though, that I wouldn't buy a Python programmable version of the toy

high tech?
(With apologies to David Spade)
I liked it better the first time...
When it was called Etch-A-Sketch. -
Additional Information
I've managed to uncover the manufacturer - their web site is here
Rumor has it that there are stylus limitations, however. -
Re:Nice concept
Nice concept, but I wouldn't want to use it in a bus or such. It real life it would crave some sort of gyro to detect movement. Imagine a bus rounding a corner and the text compensating by scrolling. At least it would serve as amusement to the fellow busriders.
With a gyroscope/accelerometer arrangement to detect movement, you could set it up so that you clear the screen by turning it over and shaking it. -
One More Questions I HaveWhen an electrode in the upper surface is given a negative charge, it attracts granules towards it, making the surface appear white.
What? I don't have to turn it upside down and shake it to clear the screen??
That's no fun...

Re:coolNow when I get the blue screen o death and decide to chuck the box out a 10 story window, the hardrive might still work.
Wrong. You simply open up your hard drive case, turn the platter upside down and use the other side. I can see some good potential uses. The first dual boot system where to go from windows to linux you simply flip your pc over. It's almost like an electronic etch a sketch.

Re:How *thick* are the web pads?Vaio is that thick because it's got a keyboard and folding parts. A flat webpad doesn't need that.
The Crusoe-powered S3 internet appliance on Transmeta.com looks suspiciously like an Etch-A-Sketch.
