Perpetual copyright
what's going to happen when the copyright expires
Copyright expires? I thought Congress made copyrights perpetual in the United States, exploiting a loophole in the Constitution.

Re:Anyone else see a flawed business model, again?
None of the big name console manufacturere make more than a small percentage of the games for their platforms. What they do is charge the games' developers for the SDK[?], and/or charge them a royalty on games sold.
What Indrema will be doing, according to the article, is making the SDK available for free, charging developers for a "technical certification", and charging royalties on non-freeware games.

Re:FreeQL ?Unix wasn't created by the OSS "community". Feel free to read up on a cursory history of it.
It's worth mentioning that BSD is a descendant, and Linux is a clone of Unix. The UNIX source was available, but by no means could its license fit the Open Source definition. MANY people had illegal copies of the the copyrighted code, however, which was likely one of the primary inspiration for Free/Open Source software later on.

It's PD because it's before 1923
god should sue for copyright infringement. It's his work, and he aint dead yet.
Any work created on or before December 31, 1922 (such as the original Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek source of the Bible or the authorized 1611 English translation thereof commissioned by King James), is public domain. Any work created on or after January 1, 1923, is effectively under perpetual copyright in the United States thanks to Congress's "creative" use of a loophole in the Constitution.

DalSemi one-wire sensors
You could build a security system using these. The advantage over a normal loop-of-switches setup (where if one switch is opened, the loop stops carrying current, and the alarm is tripped) is that you can identify which switch was opened. There is also the TINI, a microcontroller with Ethernet, one-wire, serial, and a Java virtual machine. More info here and here.

Graphical toolkits for Basic
It would be really hard to make graphical objects in BASIC.
How do you know there won't be BLIT[?] statements in the interpreter?

Basic can.
Chances are, this version of BASIC will make QBASIC look like a programmer's wet dream.
More can be done with [Basic] than you think. I was able to do write a complete TUI-based gambling simulation suite for Apple II (called place.your.bets) using only [Applesoft BASIC] and two [6502] assembly subroutines.
Still, at least they didn't try and release Perl on it. Then nobody would have been able to program the damn thing...

Re:I don't see this lastingCommunism is basically the idea that the workers should control the means of production. FreeDevelopers.net is therefore a much more 'communistic' company than managed software companies.
BTW, don't let the claims made by the authoritarian governments of China and the USSR mislead you; they have even less to do with communism than our government has to do with capitalism. There's an interesting interview with Noam Chomsky on this topic here.

Re:The Meaning of Iridium
Originally Iridium was named Iridium because it was supposed to have 77 satellites (just like Iridium atom has 77 electrons).
Of course, when Iridium went bankrupt it had only 66 satellites in the sky. Element 66, then, is Dysprosium, whose name means something like "hard to access".
Obvious, huh?

(OT)How to get mod points ALL the time
So you wish you had mod points right now. How would you like to have mod points all the time? Look at Kuro5hin. Every logged-in user can rate every comment between Score=1 and Score=5. In systems like Half-empty's Glasscode and Everything, every user can rate every comment +1 or -1 (like on Slashdot).

A foreigner's comment
How is it possible not to vote when you are among the (relatively) few people who can elect the most powerful leader in the world ?
I'm French, so of course I can't vote. I'm just watching as you Americans choose the man who will make peace or war in the Middle East, in Korea, in China, in the Balkans, and in several regions of Africa and Central Asia. The man who will negotiate all those issues with Vladimir Putin, Jiang Zemin et al. The man who will decide, incidentally, whether we Europeans can set up our own military force outside of NATO. Maybe you don't fully realize what "the President of the sole superpower" means, but believe me, we do.
The fact that millions among you (you = young, educated middle-class Americans) won't vote today - and that they're proud of it - upsets me.
Don't tell me that your vote wouldn't make a difference. At 50/50 every single vote counts, including yours. And you know that.
Don't tell us that the US election system is flawed. We know that already [?]. That's no excuse. Not voting will only make things worse.
Don't, please don't tell us that there's absolutely no difference between the two candidates. There is. You may not care much about the IQ or the qualification of your president, but we definitely do, for the very reasons I mentioned above.
Thinking that just because you didn't take ten minutes of your precious time to drop a paper in a little box, the next President of the United States will probably be George Bush jr instead of Al Gore, that drives me crazy. In any democracy, not voting is a Bad Thing, the expression of a "spoilt child" attitude. But in the US, the responsibility is even bigger, because the man you're electing will influence the lives of millions of people around the world, much more than yours. And those people cannot decide who that man will be. And you can. And you won't.

Copyrights do not expire.
Every time the day draws near when copyrights will begin to expire, Congress pulls something like the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act and gives copyright holders 20 more years.

All experienced users moderate on E2
I'd be interested in finding out from an experienced Website Admin. just how much extra webserver load (if any) would result from letting all logged in experienced users moderate.
All experienced users can moderate on [Everything 2]. Each user who has [at least 50 XP] (like Karma but you also get one for each write-up) is given 10 to 100 or more points per day with which to vote +1 or -1 on a particular write-up and cannot see other users' write-ups' scores until after voting on them.

You're thinking lack of g, not lack of earth.
Not with the muscular distrophy problems and deformed embryos, etc.
Those are effects of lack of g, not of lack of planet Earth. For those who haven't taken high school physics, g is a constant acceleration of 9.8 m/s^2 or thereabouts, which is felt by the human body as "down." It's easily to simulate g in space; simply rotate a cylindrical structure (ringworld, ds9, etc). This takes away most of the MD and [birth difference] problems.

NoDARE in my case simply equated all drug use as being the same as abuse. It also told us that drugs were equally bad, now I mean, most kids know that weed isn't as bad as say crack. We were told that weed would have us addicted the first time we ever tried it and that we would turn into losers and burnouts. I personally don't see a problem with softcore drug use in moderation, but DARE failed to make a distinguisment between the two. I'm sure many kids find that weed isn't really a bad drug, but they feel like DARE lied about everything, and then move into harder drugs. Though I will admit that even weed will get you in with the "wrong crowd" many times, and there's plenty of people who smoke too much as well.
DARE will never really be successful unless they are honest. If officer joe came in and told us that weed wouldn't kill you but it isn't good to do when you need to pay attention and to stay away from hardcore dealers maybe kids would get the message. I know plenty of people my age who responsibly use recreational drugs, and plenty who do too much when they need to be studying, etc. All in all, there needs to be more honesty and education. Most of what I've learned about drugs was online as there was no appropriate and unbiased education program in my school.
Also check out the D.A.R.E. node on everything2, its quite an interesting view on the issue.

I know they don't know how to pronounce it...
Although there is a minor debate about how to say it, pronouncing each letter is better (IMHO). SEQUEL, which stood for Structured English Query Language, became SEQUEL/2, which was reduced to the SQL we use today. (most of the top Google hits say this) Therefore, saying "sequel" refers to the original language (SEQUEL), and "es-cue-el", SQL.
Hmmm... since Nate couldn't be there to plug Everything, I guess I will: SQL writeups. (Currently, there isn't anything about SEQUEL, though.)

Transmeta's patent may not be invalidated
Let's see... Intel has "updatable microcode," but Transmeta has "updatable microcode and a commit/rollback register structure."
But then again, the old Z80 processor also had a potentially commit/rollback register structure. However, <IANAL>patent law states that to invalidate a patent claim based on prior art, all parts of a claim must be referenced in one item of prior art, or that combining them must be obvious to anybody skilled in the art.</IANAL>

Why I'm voting Nader
This is addressed to people who like most of Nader's politics (I'm not sure anyone likes
/all/ of anyone else's politics), and who are afraid of Bush.
My mom told me not to throw away my vote on Nader, and that even if I don't like Gore, I should fear Bush more. I thought about it, and decided on a compromise, which I will impart to Slashdot: If you're not in a swing state (look on the net, you'll find a listing), vote for Nader. If you are in a swing state, trade your vote:
Find someone in a non-swing state who is rational, but pro-Gore. Tell them that you will vote Gore if they vote Nader. They will, of course, accept this, since a vote in a swing state is actually worth something. It's also good for Nader, since all he cares about is the popular vote. Be careful who you pick. This is a classic example of The Prisoner's Dilemma. If you pick someone who is rational, and who knows that you are rational, then you'll be OK - see Metamagical Themas, by Douglas Hofstadter for the reasoning.
ObOnTopic: Why woud Gore appoint people who would be any more anti-IP than Bush? He's owned by the entertainment industry.
