Re:Um, he did it ON PURPOSE
http://www.facebook.com/markzuckerberg is a Facebook Page about Mark, that he runs, which allows people to become "fans" of him. His Profile is at http://www.facebook.com/zuck, although either he removed his photos, or Facebook is glitching again. More damning is the fact that he appears to have hidden his friend's list, unless that is part of the glitch.

too funny
I have spent the best part of the week trying to adjust my facebook profile to some level of discreteness that I am comfortable with. Have been very unhappy with the "all or nothing" choices, and have started just simply deleting content. I feel a little better, because now I am sure the settings will get some fine-tuning.
Just for fun:

Re:What's the complaint?
Of course, given that your friends already have access to whatever you've set to "Only Friends", and every app they install has whatever access they have to your profile, the "Only Friends" setting is a tad misleading.
Huh? Unless I'm mistaken, you can turn that off fairly easily:
If your friend uses an application that you do not use, you can control what types of information the application can access. Please note that applications will always be able to access your publicly available information (Name, Profile Picture, Gender, Current City, Networks, Friend List, and Pages) and information that is visible to Everyone.

'PyroMosh purchased the Deluxe 12" Ass-Ramming Dildo from Anal Enterprises'
Have you been reading my facebook? I have to remember to set that to private.
Seriously, though I gravely misunderstood what this beacon was. I thought it was just some API hooks that would let advertisers run queries against facebook posts presumably to deliver targeted ads or some other such nonsense. I had no idea it was what it was.
That said, from what I understand, it uses a cookie to identify one's ID. Since the cookie only contains user ID data, and logging in is not necessary, would it not have been possible (even trivial) to forge activity history for any arbitrary facebook user? As long as you know their ID, you can have them purchase the 'Deluxe 12" Ass-Ramming Dildo from Anal Enterprises' as many times as you please.

much easier to have 2 accounts.
Not only is that not easier, it's forbidden by the TOS: "Please be aware that managing multiple accounts is a serious violation of Facebook's Terms of Use. If we determine that an individual has more than one account, we reserve the right to terminate all of their accounts."
-
Re:Nah - I think you can blame Mafia Wars, Farmvil
Your best bet, if you must play FB games, is to maintain an entirely separate profile just for that purpose, and put nothing personally identifiable on it.
Maintaining multiple accounts, regardless of the purpose, is a violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use.
http://www.facebook.com/help.php?page=721
In practice, this probably doesn't matter, as long as you don't spam or start making alts, but it's something that has thus far made me uneasy enough to not make that "work account" lest my primary account get banned.

What about doing it for charity?
I know it's easy to motivate people by the prospect of making a dollar or two however the money would have a greater impact to a charity.
We've created a team to win this prize and we need your help. However we don't offer a dollar or two, just that you get a say in which charity the prize money will go too.

Richard Garriott's take on carbon offsets
Richard G blasted into space last year, and to offset the tons of jet fuel his spaceship burned, he purchased some carbon offsets. At a talk in Austin earlier this year, he made what I thought was an interesting point: carbon offsets might not work as effectively as planned, but they help get you in the habit of doing something about the problem. When/if we discover a better way, then you've already got the habit formed -- you just switch it to whatever this new method might be.
I'm sure there are some flaws in that but it was an interesting take I hadn't heard before.

some easy tips
I have done a lot of solo and group trips to France, the UK, and Denmark. Here are my tips.
1) Get a netbook with wifi. Laptops are too big to carry all the time while a netbook is about perfect. I have a dell mini 9. If you cant, then just dont bring a laptop. Its not that important. get more photo storage.
2) Get a power adapter for your gear before leaving.
3) Get a passport/cash wallet than you can hang around your neck and put inside your shirt. The truth is that if you can be spotted as a tourist you can become a target. Put 10 pounds (thats money) in your back pocket in case you have to dump some cash and run. I have had this happen and was glad to loose 10 pounds and not find out how serious the guys were.
4) Consider staying at hostels. Many people will try to save some cash and sleep in hostels but I like them for the social scene. You can meet up in the morning with fellow travelers and get tips for the day and you can chat through the night about what they saw and get some good ideas for the next day.
5) Identify Irish pubs with kitchens close to your hotel/hostel. I find that the Irish pubs (Hightly recommend the Claddagh Ring in Hendon http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=72570195125 (the hostel in Hendon is good as well) have a good plate of food that you can chow down on happily.
6) Get a day pass for the underground/city transportation and dont mess with single trip payments unless you are really planning on a single ride to and from your destination.
7) Good shoes. Dont buy new shoes just before the trip. Get some good walking or running shoes and wear them for a month. Check styles in Europe and pick something that fits in a bit yet looks reasonable to you.
8) Ditch the baseball cap and consider dressing nicer than t-shirt and jeans. You might actually pass as a european tourist instead of an american tourist. dont be affraid of slacks and a nice shirt.
9) Dont try to fake an accent in a pub(or anywhere really). Had a buddy that tried it, it cost him 4 beers :)
10) take 2 german girls up on anything they invite you to do with them. seriously. good times. pack 'protection' if you are single (as in batchelor)
11) consider that you dont want to site and wait for many MB of pictures to upload on slow hotel or hostel internet connections. Buy more memory cards. You can buy a 2GB memory card for the price of one upload session at an internet cafe. I travel with a bunch of sd-cards (canon T1i and an sd1100) and I just pop out an sd-card and put it with my passport and pop a new one in.
12) Shave. Just do it. If you go to a pub or a disco-tek or something you will fit in better.IMPORTANT
12) Bring your own batteries! there is a big counterfeit battery scam and if you dont know where to buy good batteries you are in trouble. Bring a charger and a spare battery pack for your camera(s) and other battery operated gear.
13) travel light. you want to be able to carry as much with you as possible. Jeans are good for 3 days. wear lightweight undershirts so you can re-wear your outer shirt twice. for a 6 day trip I would pack 2 jeans, 3 shirts, 6 undershirts, 7 underwear, and 7 pair of socks. That should fit in a backpack nicely.
14) CARRY ON YOUR BAG. If you cant carry your main bag with you, make sure you have 2 days worth of clothes (2 underwear, 2 socks, 2 undershirts) in your carry on. You can survive on this if you must. I have had to make 7 days on that setup and wash my clothes in the sink. Sounds like a rough situation but it was somewhat rewarding in its own way.So, be careful in planning your baggage and keeping your money and budget on track. once that is done, do the rest of the trip unscripted. simply put together a list of must sees, wants, maybees and then hit them in whatever order works. you will find that this list can morph quickly once you realize that Hyde Park and Kensington is a 1 hour deal instead of 4 you ca

Promoting Change
To set the stage to further promote the interest of the public domain I am attempting to create a platform where Citizens through virtue can force change.
Here is the latest revision:
I place this in the public domain. If your nation does not permit a public domain then I grant you an unlimited license to use this in any manner you see fit with or without attribution.
I am outlining a method here for harnessing our collective plurality, creativity, values, and intelligence to manage the issues of the day that relate to public importance.
Social networks have risen in popularity in the last few years and while they are excellent methods to maintain contact with your friends and acquaintances they could be dramatically improved by adding an agenda driven, truth seeking through adversity, and hierarchical organization of discussion, where you drill down and bubble back up - closing deeper levels of conversation with truth. You may also support your position by linking around to more comprehensive arguments.
It is organized as a forum with a root or starting point, and linking further into branches so when taken together they compose a "tree". At the root there are general categories and as you go into the branches you may encounter topics, issues, or agendas which are categories, or comments which are opinions. Both these groups are also referred to as branches. Categories are tagged with keywords. Both categories and opinions can be mixed and matched at all levels in the tree.
Anyone may start a topic/issue/agenda or comment anywhere within the tree to be managed. You have your "watch" branches, when they change you are notified and you have the opportunity to go there and be either a proponent, opponent, or authority.
When you contribute something new you have the option to link back to any other branch to support it.
Some mechanics could include: At the root of the tree, general topics exist. Root moderators manage here but they are not permitted to be proponents or opponents, only authorities. Root moderators may also change the moderator of any sub-branch. Moderators get to manage branches within their domain. Creating a branch makes you its moderator and gives you the ability to add or remove others with this status and also all branches leaving your branch are included in your domain. As truth is established it moves back up the hierarchy to support or detract from those parent branches. Your record of truth contributes to your rating of authority in their respective tags. Various information at each branch is collected to be used for different purposes - from a vote up/down in reputation for a branch, categorizing a branch (funny, off topic, insightful, interesting, etc.), declaring yourself an proponent/opponent/authority, voting to move a branch and its sub-branches to another branch, or voting for truth - to suggest some.
Everyone may attach their own opinion of reputation to any branch and these may be collated and shown. Reputation may also apply to individuals, if someone abuses, lies, vandalizes, and is pointless they can be filtered out. Being linked to your account this would sort out the majority of abuse only leaving new users and people who decide to go occasionally rogue to contend with.
Comments may be subversive, inflammatory, misrepresentations, and outright lies. Most of this could be minimized using keyword filtering, approval required to post if below a reputation threshold, and general moderation systems if desired.
The steps people take in interacting with this forum are: understanding the issue, adding their own ideas, contributing to the strengths, and criticizing the weakness'. While seeking truth, bias is permitted to cover areas of opinion but prejudice is not as this covers areas of fact.
You can find the submission in Facebooks feedback forum: Here.

Re:Three things we don't need.
Facebook chat uses Erlang. For the rest of the site, you can glean from that post that it's a combination of C++, Javascript, PHP for the most part, and probably like any shop, other languages too, who knows, Excel macros.

Re:Who wants to update??
How many people making Hackintoshes are actually paying for the software
A copy of OS X and Mac is profitable for Apple. A copy of OS X and an netbook probably isn't.
That's RIAA logic: you're actually claiming that Apple lost money by selling me that copy of Leopard for $130, because it's less than the $1,000 or so I would have paid if I'd bought their hardware at the same time. While I'm certain they'd rather have the $1,000, I'm just as certain that they ended up with $130 that they wouldn't have had otherwise.
-
Re:Who wants to update??
Sigh. You can access them prior to purchase, [apple.com] and are encouraged to do so
Did you check for a EULA at the website for the box of cereal you opened this morning? The book you'll read before going to bed? The CD you listened to in your car? The chair you're sitting on right now?
Of course not. You handed someone cash, and they handed you a product. You own it, just like I own my copy of OS X. Don't get started on the "so you think you have the right to give away copies?" crap because no one's saying that. What I am saying is that I have the right to do whatever I want with my copy, short of violating the law, because it became my property when I bought it.
Oh, and nothing that I know of prevents me from hacking the installer so that it never presents a EULA to me. Why couldn't I? Until/unless I agree to a EULA, I haven't consented to be bound by any terms beyond the ones on that box of breakfast cereal.
And finally, even that BS EULA only requires Apple-branded hardware. Any lawyers care to offer evidence that my Apple-brand (by me) HP Mini 10 doesn't count? Is "Foo-branded" a term of legal art meaning "branded by Foo" as opposed to "branded as Foo"? I'm clearly not trying to sell it as an authentic Apple product, and I'm not aware of any restrictions that would keep you from labeling your Chevy as a Ford so long as you don't try to misleadingly sell it as such.

Why all the marketing?
Anyone else noticed DARPA's recent major marketing/publicity campaign? There is now this well-publicized balloon hunt. There was the televised robotic vehicle challenge. Even very recently, DARPA was central to the plot of an episode of NCIS: LA. Its research efforts have been given very visible press in magazines such as Scientific American. (Look here for another recent SA article about DARPA research.) DARPA has also been featured twice on 60 Minutes in the past few months. And, it now has quite a following on Facebook.
All of these somehow involve or inform the general public--not exactly par for the course given DARPA activities historically have been kept very much under wraps. What's really going on here? Why the recent publicity barrage? Two years ago, or less, I'm willing to bet 98% of Americans had no idea DARPA even existed. Might it be the old magician's trick of having us watch one hand while the other hand is actually performing the "magic?" For example, have you seen iRobot's shape-shifting Chembot recently developed with DARPA funding?

Re:Rightfully disallowed?
This just seems like crying from those who don't have other options in their games than to directly pay with money. It's good to offer another options for people.
And so what if they get more back and have more to spend on advertising in turn? It just means their game is more successful (in terms of monetization) than the alternatives.
This has nothing to do with Facebook. There are laws that the lead-generation offers have to follow like showing the terms and price of the offer. If they aren't following them, you report them to police or FCC.
(btw, Facebook does allow lead-generation offers and also has pretty strict rules about advertisement)

Businesses and spammers don't use Facebook? That's funny, Facebook has business accounts and people complain about spam on Facebook. Re:iFail
Facebook started out as a way for high school and college friends to find each other easily. I remember way back I think you even needed a school email to sign up for Facebook.
I believe Facebook was originally only for college students. It was a bit of a big deal when they started adding high schools as well (that was before it opened to the general public, of course). Originally, yes, you did need a
.edu email address from a college that Facebook had added to their system. I even still have my email/password saved in Firefox from when you still accessed http://schoolname.facebook.com/ -
Re:Google or EC2 a "closed data service?"
What would stop you from taking your data out of the cloud? SFTP not allowed? Can't access Mysql DB from outside? I'm asking honestly - I'd love to know.
I agree, this whole article sounds like an end user rant. There is nothing to prevent one from using the available Facebook Web services to move data to whatever it is that you want to move it to say like MySpace. The problem being the marshalling and unmarshalling of data between services. If you really feel that it is a bad rub, then push for a standard in Social Networking protocols using whatever happy technology you want.
I really think that the guy is bitching that when you put data up on the "cloud" that in order for someone else to actually see it they too must sign-up for the service (aka, it's not open to people who haven't signed up.) There again, I think the guy is mostly focusing on why can't someone put something on MySpace or Facebook and not have to have an account to see the content (much like YouTube I guess.) I don't know but I've never seen a problem with moving data in and out of Google or EC2, but there again I'm a developer so the end-user may be looking at this whole thing differently. The whole thing is incredibly interesting because in order to place a comment you have to sign-up and give out your email address. -

Lots of people gave Vista a bad rep because -- get this -- they didn't know how to use their damned computers!
I'm sure that must be it. I've only personally owned computers since 1982, taught myself assembler to write faster games on a C=64, hacked hardware on an Amiga, switched to Linux in '98 or so, got a Slashdot login some time the same week, picked up FreeBSD a few months later, snagged a degree in CompSci, built the home server sitting next to me from Newegg parts, and turned an HP Mini into a Hackintosh last month. That must be why my wife's dual-core laptop with 2GB of RAM and Vista ran like crap from the day we bought it, even after I stripped out the OEM junk and have almost nothing running at startup: because I'm a technophobic newbie who doesn't know how to use my damned computers.
Yeah.
Yeah, Ditto to that. Vista's UI is a mess IMHO. I hate it. Windows 7 is a vast improvement, and if the past is any indicator, this will be Vista's death lurch. People will be buying new PC's with 7 and Vista will slowly wither on the vine, much as ME did. Even old-timer's are ready to move forward with it.
