Re:I'll be Bach
Yeah, poor Mozart was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave. Roll forward a hundred-plus years, though, and Gershwin's got himself a pretty nice place.

Re:Live by the sword
How much of David Allen Van Vleet's personal information is now public record because he filed these court papers?
David Allen Van Vleet died in 2006, a good 8 years before he made his FOIA request.
Zombies don't usually worry about retaliation. They keep coming after their target, slowly but surely, filing out FOIA requests after FOIA requests, submitting court documents after court documents. They're relentless. Outside of updating their facebook page, playing the occasional farmville game, and voting in elections, they really have nothing else to do but pursue full-bosomed women.

I could be mistaken, but I believe FDR is here:

It's really the only appropriate name for such a machine.

Re:Really?
See? I told you I'd probably get the quote wrong. I suggest you refer those pedants to Carlin; he'll certainly listen to criticism. (He won't change his act, but that's hardly a change.)
Gonna be real hard for Carlin to change his act, even if you present a compelling argument.

Rocket science is still a challenging science. Where is Werner von Braun when we need him?
Wernher von Braum currently resides at 2823 King St., Alexandria, Virginia, USA; however, he apparently has not been responding to correspondence or inquiries since at least Jun. 16, 1977.

Re:Also neat because?
Two very important quotes to remember....
"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him." -Nietzsche
"Nietzsche is dead." -God
One is pretty easy to verify. There's a gravestone in Germany with his body under it. Well, I assume it's still there. in 1998, they were talking about digging up the area to strip mine for coal. Hmmm.
As for God, I haven't seen his gravestone quite yet. Then again, no one has ever seen his body, so that makes it pretty tough to confirm that he is dead, or even existed.
:)(and, yes, I understand the real meaning of the Nietzsche quote, it's called humor.)

Re:Canada vs. US
Exactly.
Case in point, the grave site of Sir John A. McDonald, father of Canadian confederation: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pif
& GRid=2145&PIgrid=2145&PIcrid=639423&ShowCemPhotos= Y&Pretty shitty, and I'm guessing less than 1% of Canadians have ever seen it.
My theory is given that we have been predominantly ruled by Quebecois-centric politicians throughout modern history, it has been in the interest of the ruling party to downplay anglophone Canadian history. Additionally, given that the Liberal party chose to deal with our national population birthrate/deathrate crisis by adopting culturally damaging immigration policies, they've been promoting the non-existence of Canadian culture and identity in high-school history classes in favour of politically correct 'multicultural mosaic' rewrite of Canadian history. (Oh, except Quebec is a distinct nation, with a rich history!)

That wasn't me. That was Alvin (aka Junior) Samples. I liked him too, but he died in 1983 from a heart attack. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&

Bear in mind...
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
As ever, HTH. -

Re:Intel is stupid? (Not flamebait!)
"We're Intel, and we follow tradition like companies such as Kraft; we don't realize at all that unlike making cheese, if we're going to follow Morris's law of increase and doubling performance, we have to make leaps of faith into other shit like diamonds."
And it seems Morris's law of increase and doubling works long after he's been dead! -
KFC guyHarland "Colonel" Sanders

Re:This only works for low frequencies
Suposedly, expierimental composer John Cage expieienced a sound dampening room at MIT shortly before he died. He supposedly was ale to isolate two kinds of flowing noises, caused by blood rushing throgh his viens/arteries. He died of a stroke shortly therafter. Unfortunately, "this" this is the closest I thing to documentation I have been able to find. My original source was a professor's lecture.

If I recall correctly, Mel Blanc, who was the voice actor for many of Chuck Jones' characters including Porky Pig has "That's All, Folks" on his tombstone.

Museum & NSA Mission & past, Re:Two headed beastFirst, if you have a chance and are in the Washington/Baltimore area, the National Cryptologic Museum is a treat. Don't miss taking a photo with an old Cray supercomputer
A favorite exhibit is the carved Great Seal of the United States from the old U.S. Embassy in Moscow
From Surveillance countermeasures primer from Kaiser Electronics part one
One type of free-space transmitter, a type that has no battery, is the so-called "resonant cavity" transmitter. The Great Seal of the United States in the Moscow Embassy concealed such a device. As has been reported extensively in the media, a wooden wall plaque was presented as a gift along with the suggestion of mounting it on the wall behind the Ambassador's desk. Many may recall the photograph of Ambassador Lodge pointing to a "bug" concealed in the back of the plaque. The embarrassment caused by the detection of this transmitter motivated the intelligence community to spring into action and devices similar to it soon evolved.
[click above for technical details on how it worked]
Yes, the roles of the NSA are diverse and growing. From the About the NSAThe National Security Agency is the Nation's cryptologic organization. It coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. information systems and produce foreign intelligence information. [...]
Happily, our government is such that we know that the organization exists and is limited its scope. Unknown and unlimited secret organizations are the greatest threat to personal and national freedom. Note too that the NSA's existence was secret.
From The Evolution of the U.S. Intelligence community
The 1950s Acting on the recommendations of a commission of senior officials headed by George Brownell, President Truman, by classified memorandum , established the National Security Agency (NSA) in October 1952 in recognition of the need for a single entity to be responsible for the signals intelligence mission of the United States. Placed within the Department of Defense, NSA assumed the responsibilities of the former Armed Forces Security Agency as well as the signals intelligence responsibilities of the CIA and other military elements. In 1958, the National Security Council issued directives that detailed NSA's mission and authority under the Secretary of Defense.
The secrecy was probably the only way to combine the groups handling sensitive material which were competing for the same job.
Keeping sensitive information from wandering off is necessary if espionage exists. Even after 50 years captured information is useful. See the now declassified (well mostly) VENONA project.
Finally, have a look at NSA via slashdot's past in
Enjoy, Chris Lent -
