Re:Overstepped??!!The flickr blog has a post on this entitled "Sometimes We Make Mistakes" linking to an official response to this incident stating (among other well and humbly said things):
There are several policies which will be changing as a direct result of this incident and the goal is that nothing like this ever happens again. Any errors from now on should be on the side of caution.

Didn't Y! have this already ?
If I remember correctly, Yahoo's oneSearch already did this ? Except it doesn't seem to be available for regular search.
On the other hand, I've been playing around with the Alpha (Beta) search, which seems to be much cooler. But only available for australia (the cool interface must be due to their uber-cool office).
Heh, to put it mildly ... everybody's doin' it :) -
Still not restored
Flickr HQ has since issued an apology for the removal of her post.
It is still not restored. How long does it take for them to do that? Or is their own internal administrative management panel some form of menu hell that they can't figure out how to navigate to find the OOPS button?

Re:Overstepped??!!These are the days I wish I had mod points!
I'm pretty sure you didn't even bother to follow any of the links on the story. Here's what Flickr told her when they erased her post: "Flickr is not a venue for to you harass, abuse,
impersonate, or intimidate others. If we receive a valid
complaint about your conduct, we will send you a warning or
terminate your account." Now please go read the yahoo cache of her plea and amuse us with all the examples you can find of harassment, abuse, impersonation or intimidation then com back and let us know how your right vs. wrong theory plays out. She doesn't pay Flickr anything so far as I can assume Again, you didn't even see her Flickr page I imagine. Here you go: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rebba/
See that little "pro" image? It means she payed a yearly subscription. -

The ConflictFrom Flickr's Terms of Use, there are several reasons why this post was taken down. The ToS states:
Flickr is intended for personal use and is not a generic image hosting service. Professional or corporate uses of Flickr are prohibited.
How did they know that this isn't a PR stunt? Set up a facade company, sell your work through it with no traces back to you then post on Flickr about the problem. Bam! Instant exposure to thousands of people.
We may, but have no obligation to, remove Content and accounts containing Content that we determine in our sole discretion are unlawful, offensive, threatening, libelous, defamatory, obscene or otherwise objectionable or violates any party's intellectual property or these Terms of Use.
And, as a result of Rebekka's plea for people to send letters to OnlyDreemin, the blog entitled "Jumping to conclusions" states:Today I have been in contact with OnlyDreemin and asked for clarification on this issue. I was saddened to learn they have received death threats over this matter, proving once again just how passionate people are, no matter how misguided, when it comes to this type of theft.
So while Rebekka's post wasn't necessarily threatening, it sure resulted in threatening actions which, if I'm not mistaken, death threats are illegal in the United States and most likely in Iceland as well. If you read the rest of Flickr's ToS, they are very stringent about targeting other Flickr users with any kind of content/e-mail/threats whatsoever.
Why doesn't Rebekka just sue OnlyDreemin? They are legally liable for what they sell. If they can't produce the people who sold them the prints, that's their fault for doing business with shady people. Did they bother to ask the people for licensing information? I find it hard to believe that the art world doesn't have a way to catalog and look up sellers of art with licenses or anything like that. You don't just transfer (£3000.00) in cash or to an anonymous Paypal account. Come on, hold someone responsible, don't get on Flickr and start a smear campaign toward them!
I honestly think Flickr did the right thing. They shouldn't be involved in this, they aren't a legal site or a petition site or anything like that at all. They are a general photo content site. Don't run your business from it, don't use it for your political or legal battles. That's it, plain and simple.
There is a better place for this conflict, in the courts not on Flickr. -

Re:D'uhhhhhhhhh
Their having written a book and occasionally appearing in the media is not that unusual. Here in the UK there is a site called b3ta, which hasn't really caught on that much in America, because it's very UK-centric. I wouldn't say that they're more than a subculture, but they've released a book (full of user-made content) and, though I've never seen them on TV, you do get them occasionally in the newspaper.

Re:20 Million users contributed feedback
Prev Field/Next Field - to replace the appalling tab/shift-tab
IBM has had these on their terminal keyboards for a LONG while. But teminal apps are hard to screw up (not that many haven't done their damnedest), and web forms are notoriously tab-order-fucked, mostly because everyone uses tables to lay out the form.Submit Form - this one clicks "OK" so users don't confused about the ENTER key when there are rich text fields on the form (Escape can remain the "Cancel Form" key)
An okay idea, but wouldn't work with many of the Javascript-only forms that assholes are coding now. Why? Some do it to keep our browser from storing the username and password (asshats that think that makes it more secure). Some do it because they think it's cooler to use Javascript to send the data instead of a form (idiots who don't know how forms and HTTP are supposed to work).Help Key - using F1 as 'help' seems to have single-handedly killed the function keys. Eleven perfectly usable program-specific keys that no-one uses any more. Bring back function key overlays!
I've got one of those! http://www.flickr.com/photos/random_robin/4921079 :-)5 4/ -
Seconded.
I found a huge bug in my kitchen last fall; I took a picture and mailed it to my local university's entomology professor, who was kind enough to identify it.
-
And what's wrong with that?
Hey, it's not like the photographer has to identify the animal. And besides, people who aren't scientists can take decent pictures of pigeons, of frogs, or of squirrels; there are various forums for positively identifying plants and animals, and there's no good reason to restrict media sources to experts.

Re:Try BARcamp
It's BarCamp you silly goose. I would highly recommend organizing BarCampChicago similar to how we organized BarCampAustin 2 this past March. I mc'd most of the day and helped get presentations rolling and the likes. We got some of the companies at SXSWi to open up bar tabs (Microsoft, thanks to Chris Bernand, pitched in $1000 that went pretty quick, thanks to Dave Morrin from Facebook for the $500 tab and burritos too). Towards the end of the evening Soulhat played a show and we all ended up having a good time.
The most important bit with a BarCamp is that the community should be behind bringing it into existence, instead of waiting for USENIX, WWDC, or an O'Reilly conference, make your own! Have fun :)

Re:It's possible.
Well, I read the page above, and I actually agree with those results. Thing is, I scan in the negative as a TIFF (16bit) and compare it to a TIFF (16bit) from the RAW file. So almost apples and apples.
There are some shots where I took the same scene from my apartments window and on the negative ones (in this case Fuji Natura 1600) has way more visible dynamic range than the 30D shots (also ISO 1600).
But perhaps the built in lightmeter from my Bessa is much better than the one from the 30D? The Canon ones like to make everything too bright and with digital, if it is too bright, there is no way to get any data back ...
Its just my personal experience, that when I shoot digital, I really know I have to be careful which dark to bright areas, negative film is so much more forgiving for doing light measure errors.
Just for compare:

of course I could have boosted the dark areas via the curve tool in CaptureOne, but I would have introduced more "noise". -

DSLR not about just picture quality
I first got a Fujifilm S5500, which has a nice optical zoom, reasonable resolution, good feature set including various manual options, and is flexible enough for most lighting conditions. Good photography is about controlling many exposure parameters, such as focal depth. For any light condition there is a combination of ISO, exposure speed and F stop. For small camera phones the solution is to have a small lens with infinite focus. The limitations are that it can't zoom in; except digitally, and you can't get a shot that brings out the subject. Is that bad? Well, if you just want a snap a camera phone is great.
However, even the Fujifilm, which is a great camera, has its limits. The big one for me is start up time and shutter lag. When it comes to being able to quickly react to unexpected events that last only a few seconds there is simply no substitute for a DSLR. The ability to turn on your camera and have it ready to shoot before you get the eyepeice to your eye is vital. For example, before I had my Nikon D70 I went on a trip watching dolphins. There was a fantastic display of dolphins jumping clear out of the water, but I didn't get a single shot because unless you have the shutter half way pressed on most dogitals it takes a second or so to actually fire.
However, I have now been the photographer at two weedings, and the D70 has been wonderful; you can see the shot and press the shutter in a fraction of a second. At an airshow recently I captured a boeing jet taking off at a high angle of attack; impossible with cameras with shutter lag. The quality of the images is slightly better, and the lenses provide a little more flexibility, and there are more complex lighting options, such as speedlights that are better than the built in ones on smaller digitals, but the biggest feature for me on a DSLR is the instant shutter.
The review in this context limits the test to things a camera phone can do - that is take a photo of something reasonably close and not moving. Thats not to say I think camera phones are bad or poor quality images, just that they don't have the flexibility of a DSLR. -
Re:It's possible.
All of the shots in the review are closeups. Knowing form experience, Camera phones are pretty good at closeups.
Given that I am quite impressed by SonyEricsson Cybershot series. The K790 is just as good as a Digital camera of that caliber.
Also since the review focused on a single shot and location, it's hard to see how each of these perform in various lighting conditions and outdoors. Flickr has a camera finder service which makes it much easier to find and review live shots. -
Re:Canon 400D had white balance issues (?)
And obviously bigger sensors have much, much better low light/high ISO performance
... but there is something to be said for being able to carry a camera in your pocket.
Almost. The primary thing that you gain with a bigger sensor and removable lenses is control over the depth of field. You just can't fake that (very well anyways) with a compact camera. As far as low light sensitivity, Fuji has released some superb sensors with their F10/F11/F30/F20/F31fd models. Of course, DSLRs also come with much more manual control, but that's a very artificial limitation.
I've got an F30, and there's less noise (and less heavy handed noise reduction) at ISO 800 than you'll see on some more full featured cameras at ISO 400. I took these two at ISO 800, with no flash: Graffiti on the beach, San Francisco Mayor Newsom, Burlesque (ISO 800+flash). ISO 1600 on this camera can still yield usable prints, and ISO 3200 is good for an emergency shot.
Sure, I miss some things about an SLR with this camera. For instance, I miss having manual control over the focus. I dislike that the 3:2 aspect ratio can only be chosen at the lower of the 6MP quality settings. Sure, sometimes I miss being able to use a better zoom lens, but then I realize that this thing fits into my pocket. -
