Re: It's not plastic that's the problem...
Notice what *all three* have in common- selfishness.
Which is also the real reason behind water fluoridation. Cut back on that surplus population so you can grab more stuff.
And yes, it did (been studied over and over and over and over):

Re:Its about time
Europe banned Fluoride in drinking water since at least the 1980's.
And all their teeth fell out!
;) Just kidding, they got refrigeration too.The biggest risk is that fluoride is not fluoride. Sodium fluoride dissociates well, but most water supplies use silicofluorides that don't, and they cause heavy metals to cross the blood-brain barrier because the silicofluoride compounds interact biologically.
The dominant fluoridation chemical is actually toxic waste from fertilizer plant smokestack scrubbers that would have a real disposal problem if there weren't municipal water supplies to dump it in.
And those problems don't even touch on osteoporosis, the economic problems with watering one's lawn with fluoridated water, or the moral issue of involuntary medication.
I've got cavity-free kids on well water. Toothpaste with xylitol (birch/watermelon sugar alcohol) is the simple answer. In Scandinavia they give the kids a couple pieces of xylitol gum with their school lunch - far more economical than the US system and with fewer risks. But in the US, government programs are a secular religion that may only ever be tweaked, not found to be foolhardy.

Danger Will Robinson
Many of you (who haven't been living under a rock) are familiar with the argument against silver dental amalgams. It's widely known that they contain >50% inorganic mercury which later reacts in the human body causing, to name but a few: degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, insomnia, all kinds of neurological illnesses and much much more. Human evolution never developed a strategy for coping with these metals as it didn't need to and they are lethal. [1]
I bring it up because it is something which has affected our family greatly. My brother and hence our family were plagued with the results of depression and neurological illness over the years. I researched as much as I could and finally I discovered what I believe is the root cause (no pun intended). The mouth, teeth. I got a look inside my brothers mouth today and it's loaded with metals. I will follow-up with verification but its plain to see.
Dental amalgam controversy [1]
We live in an age of information and people are waking up to the data that is all around them. The problems with fluoride and fluoridation of the water supply (Ireland's is the most fluoridated in Europe) are also being noticed as the lid is lifted on that issue as well.
Flouride alert[2].Toothpaste: Most toothpaste (almost all) sold in Ireland contains fluoride in a concentrated form, and thus is even more dangerous than the tap water, which should at all times be filtered.
Issues with toothpastesAll of these issues affect you and your loved ones every day, and in the case of mercury fillings, the problem is potentially much more severe. It has had a very negative effect on my family, so this is my story.

Are you sure your information isn't dated? WHO Data.
Yeah, we have the Boston study, but I'm skeptical that they adequately controlled for lead paint.
FYI, a bunch of references at the bottom of this article.
I'm 47. I haven't had one, ever. I don't know what it's like to have one. Compare and contrast to my parents who had mouths full of metal by the time they hit 20 years old.
Yup, and mine too. Caries have decreased over time, independent of fluoridation. Studies listed at previous link.

Sharron Angle is fucking crazy.
Opposes fluoridation, the UN and the Department of Education.
Good, I'm not sure, and good.
Fluoridation causes a few health problems from weak, stained, teeth and skeletal damage, to cancer, fluoride is a mutagen.
I don't really care much about the UN. I especially don't like it when people say the US has to follow UN rules, even when they are unconstitutional and deny sovereignty.
The federal Department of Education? Where is it mentioned in the Costitution of the USA? It isn't so it isn't authorized.

Re:Kid won't know what to do when an adult
Until the advent of mass spectrometers in every household, the difference between a nice cool drink and a delicious cup of cancer comes down to what someobody else may or may not have been dumping into your water supply.
You do know that most municipal water supplies have hundreds of toxic chemicals intentionally dumped into it? For example, there is a strong link between fouride and bone cancer or flouride and brain damage.
Also, don't forget that our Science Czar advocates putting sterilents in the drinking water and food. The government is full of eugenicists.

Re:Cool story bro
Swallowing tooth paste is possibly harmless too. I just wouldn't do it every day, just in case.
Good instinct. I'd take aspartam over flouride any day..
Don't Swallow Your Toothpaste

And sure drinking diet helps with weight loss. When you drink 2L of coke a day like I did, it makes a whole world of change.
I started drinking Cola Zero when it appeared some 2 years ago. It tastes a WHOLE LOT BETTER than Diet Coke by the way. After a month of drinking Zero instead of regular I realized that I lost about 6kg. After that, it was a rollercoaster ride. I started being aware of calorie intake and stopped eating other junk too, and then, about a year later, i lost like 35kg out of 105 (yeah i was fat@20yo mind you) looking best i ever did.
So yeah, take it from me - drinking diet helps with loosing weight ..A LOT.
And on topic, nowdays I don't drink nearly as much cola as i did 2-3 years ago, maby 2L a week insted of 2L per day, and certainly not because of some shock value articles on cola health issues.. just a change in lifestyle mostly, and I don't feel any better. Hell, what certainly feels good is a glass of cool Cola after a good meal or after a hard day at work.
And from TA:The first, a 21 year-old woman, was consuming up to three litres of cola a day.
It turned out she had been drinking up to seven litres of cola a day for the last 10 months.
WOW, I'm impressed

city water additives
The site markets this to First World households. But is that where its value lies?
I can see something like this being useful where I work. The town puts toxic waste into the water, so I buy RO water by the gallon instead of using that town's tap water. Useful pitcher filters are expensive, slow, and clog easily. It's probably less energy expensive, overall to use the electricity rather than drive over to pick up another gallon at the store.

Flouride. Here's a little video about flouride.
Found it here
Many people, I've noticed, seem to ignore the whole enforced fluoridation issue by telling silly jokes in the nudge, point and giggle method of spin control tried and tested in junior high schools everywhere. It would be easy to comment on the sort of folks who are controlled in this manner, but there's a fish in a barrel quality to that which feels sort of mean.

Re:Leadthe water is dramatically cleaner than ever before
Except for all the fluoride they are using (there are only a handful of countries that do this - most of Europe has rejected, banned or stopped fluoridation all together). Mind you, a reverse osmosis system will protect you against this threat. -

Re:Wouldn't It Be Easier Just To...
Flouride in water supplies is beneficial. The others aren't.
Not so fast. Here is a referenced document with the problems of flouride in drinking water. Highlights include that the type used in water supplies is industrial grade (i.e., industrial waste) vs pharmaceutical grade (like in toothpaste) and that modern research shows there is no benefit from ingestion into the body (which leaves only the harmful effects)

Re:fluoridate
Sounds like a bunch of quacks to me. Ever place I've ever lived, there's been floride in the water.
If it was such a serious health problem the entire population of my city (600,000 people) should have the problems you describe. Yet they don't.
Note that on the insulin front, there will naturally be futher implications if someone already has insulin problems, such as diabetes.
My grandmother had diabetes just about all of her life. No one single doctor told her to avoid floride.
Oh, from the SAME site you quote, you may want to check this out (FWI, I DO live in Burlington). http://www.fluoridealert.org/news/2468.html
Also note this little quote from that article: "The National Cancer Institute says studies of people living in communities with fluoridated water 'did not find an association between fluoride and cancer risk.'"

Also effects carbohydrate metabolism thru interactions with insulin (also causing lethagy, weight gain), google for:

Not too mention that Communists flouridate the water, making it sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids.
It's not communists.

Re:Unexpected Success?
Bottled water sells because of psychological tricks and convenience.
Actually, I buy 5-gallon jugs of it as drinking water to avoid getting the fluoride that is put in tap water in the US.
Further, likening the sale and marketing of a human necessity to something as trivial and ethereal as popular music is doomed to be a poor analogy. -
Wrong about fluoride
well a floride coating is what natrually protects our teeth, thats why tap water, and toothpaste have this as an additive. Actually I just read that tooth decay is on the rise because many of us no longer drink tap water wwhich is forified with floride
Like many Americans my age, I grew up with a positive association to fluoride. Toothpaste commercials told me that fluoride helped prevent tooth decay and that I should brush my teeth with fluoride toothpaste, so I used it every day. The dentist gave me fluoride treatments for my teeth. Fluoride was also added to municipal water supplies, so drinking tap water (and anything made with it) gave me a daily dose of fluoride too. Like most other people, I assumed it must be healthy. Otherwise, why would people add it to toothpaste and water?
Fluoride is not added to the tap water to protect our teeth.
Firstly, the American Dental Association states that all ground and surface water in the United States contains some naturally occurring fluoride. There is no such thing as "fluoride-deficient" water. Furthermore, only calcium fluoride occurs naturally in water, and it has never been used for fluoridation. The chemicals used to fluoridate 90% of public drinking water are industrial grade hazardous wastes captured in the air pollution-control scrubber systems of the phosphate fertilizer industry, called silicofluorides. The most commonly used one is Hydrofluosilicic acid.
http://www.fluoridedebate.com/
The fluoride used for water fluoridation is considered by the FDA as an "unapproved drug". Research shows fluoridation is unnecessary since we're already receiving 300% or more of the American Dental Association's recommended daily amount.
http://www.nofluoride.com/
The FDA does not regulate tap water. The EPA does. Despite official government policy, the union of 1500 scientists, lawyers, engineers and other professional employees at the EPA opposes water fluoridation.
http://www.fluoridealert.org/hp-epa.htm
As you probably already know, the fluoride used in tap water is a neurotoxin including cadium and mercury.

Fluoridated water has caused cancer in children. The increased cancer risks, identified in a newly available study conducted at the Harvard School of Dental Health, were found at fluoride exposure levels common in both the US and Britain.

Fluoridated water disrupts DNA enzyme repair. Fluoride affects fertility rates.

The fluoride used in tap water causes genetic damage. One US Government report investigated 156 deaths over 3 years. They concluded that fluoride accumulates in body tissues and may eventually cause fatal illnesses.

Re:Actually, many studies have shown that
Mod parent up. Fluorine applied to the tooth enamel (topically) causes a chemical reaction that makes the enamel more resistant to acid, which is a good thing. Fluorine when ingested (systemically), such as in drinking water, causes chemical reactions throughout the body and is a damn stupid thing to do. http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/teeth/caries/

fluoride is toxic waste
Ok, I'm preparing for the tin foil hat jokes, but fluoride's actually not good for people. Granted, a treatment that binds fluoride to the surface of the teeth is better than drinking it, but I'd prefer if we didn't fuck with fluoride at all. Almost all fluoride that's produced is merely a biproduct of other chemical reactions. If city governments didn't buy this stuff from chemical plants to put in drinking water, they'd have to dispose of it like any other toxic waste.
-
Re:Not right now...
Did you know that flouride is related to florine, and that it isn't an accident that "florine" sounds like the poison "chlorine"? There is a reason why you aren't supposed to swallow the flouride at the dentist's. Floride is toxic. Too much of it causes severe bone trouble, and even brain damage.
"People who live in areas with high levels of naturally-occurring fluoride in the water should use alternative sources of dinking water, such as bottled water."(atsdr.cdc.gov)
There are 50 reasons here. -
Re:4) Go back to your hut in the woods2) You think companies make money off of flouride? I think my friend that YOU have been giving the chemical companies money, albeit of the small, illegal, methlab variety. Flouride isn't patented, is cheap as hell to produce and is added in very, very, very small quantities to the water. There is fuck all money to be made in it. The money is made in perscriptrion drugs that are patented.
The argument is that companies used to have to pay to dispose of fluoride properly (pay $$$$), now they put it into the water for the govt (receive $). So what if they don't get paid a lot by the govt? A small income is better than a huge expense!
This is all well and good, everybody wins, unless you believe that fluoride is bad for you. That's where to start talking about tin foil hats if you're so inclined, but the idea that companies have a great financial incentive to flourinate the water supply is not controversial.
For more information, make sure your tin foil hat is on tight, then see here or here

Re:Lindows and Flouride
Not wackos, and skeletal fluorosis is a real problem, caused by a build up of flouride in the body. Flouride just plain isn't nice. Bear in mind that your toothpast also contains flouride. The combined total amount of flouride from both your toothpaste and flouridated drinking water may be higher than the recomended doss (Some people find 0% too much, let alone 140%) Too much flouride can cause discolouration and brittleness of the teeth.
Are you sure you want to drink flouridated water? -

And when you consider telling me to get my tinfoil hat, have a look at what is underneath your own hat.
That's right, your pinneal gland is a great filter for the flouride you consume. I don't think flouridation is some grand conspiracy, I would just like to have a choice in whether or not I take this controversial medication. -
