I just looked at FreeBSD's site (again) to look them over. I'm drawn to trying one of their distros out, but got stopped on the "primary partition" requirement. I used a bunch of logical partitions (15 or so) to set up all my test linux distributions. I guess I would have to redo the drive to set up a good "primary" for FreeBSD if I'm serious about installing it. They have a news site for the FreeBSD OS here.
I realize that this is a fork of the original UNIX, and that there are others, but they sure put up a good front on their site. With Redhat turning into "Fedora" I'm sure it'll be a while before we see Fedora books and CD's on the bookshelves. Apple didn't change the APSL because of you. Hell, Apple can't possibly think much of your project, considering they've since founded OpenDarwin, and are paying people to create DarwinPorts.

It's kind of sad you need to write these articles yourself. I mean, if people actually liked your distribution, they'd be writing these crappy articles for you! You don't see Linus submitting stories to Slashdot about Linux, do you?

Darwin already has a mature, GPL-licensed, Stallman-compatible software distribution: Fink. Hell, it' even uses apt, the favourite software management tool of people everywhere. There's also the aforementioned DarwinPorts project, for people that wish to use modern, ports-like system on Darwin.

Maybe GNU-Darwin should be focusing on important things: It's not part of MetaPKG, the massive collaborative Darwin software effort, which Fink and DarwinPorts primary members. Even the newcomer Gentoo has been invited to take part. But GNU-Darwin has not.

The future of Darwin software is setting sail, yet GNU-Darwin isn't on the boat. This can't possibly bode well for GNU-Darwin's future relevance on the platform. Maybe they should be working to become a part of that, instead of submitting rubbish to Kuro5hin, Slashdot and OSNews.

Right now, GNU-Darwin is totally irrelevant, and there's nothing on the horizon to change that. If it disappeared tomorrow, no-one would notice. Instead of trolling here at Slashdot, go do something!

This whole article is one giant piece of flamebait...GNU-Darwin is clearly crap, doing nothing that can't be accomplished with either FreeBSD or OpenDarwin and Fink. There is nothing newsworthy here, 5 years of an OS that has made significant inroads would be something...Linux certainly developed into something notable in five years beyond a curious *NIX-like OS...and BSD has been around for ages, powering Yahoo and Google et al.
Darwin has not managed managed to achieve anything other than curiousity status, IMO. I mean it's great when it's under OS X and it's cool that Apple is trying to provide an Open Source alternative for its hardware (ever think maybe all those G3s and G4s need to do something and it's easier to sell a G5 when that old computer can become a web server/firewall/mail server/file server for nothing and still use all the Apple hardware? Or let all those switchers do something with that x86 they now have collecting dust?) Plus, ya know, if the hardware market ever goes bust, Apple can always sell this nifty OS as an enterprise/opensource/consumer alternative depending on what they put in or take out...

It is official; Netcraft confirms: Red Hat Linux is dying. One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Red Hat community when IDC confirmed that Red Hat market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Red Hat has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along.

Red Hat is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a genius to predict Red Hat's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Red Hat faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Red Hat because Red Hat is dying. Things are looking very bad for Red Hat. As many of us are already aware, Red Hat continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

I used RedHat and SuSE distros too, then I switched to FreeBSD altogether. Never regretted this move. The best support is still the user- and developer community.

So long, Red Hat, thanks for all the development support and good luck in the heavily contented enterprise market. Your move to End-of-Life Red Hat 9 will help smaller, but smarter Linux-supporting companies and -vendors. That's what healthy competition is all about, after all... :)

It runs fine for some months now and I can't see any reason why I should change to Linux or another *BSD (I love pf).

You can use pf with FreeBSD pf_freebsd-1.0_7 as well as ipf and ipfw. For me the reason for using OpenBSD for firewalls in the past was that it had altq integrated in kernel and that time if you wanted to use altq with FreeBSD you had to apply patches for "release" kernel version. Now altq is in FreeBSD kernel too.

The reason why not much is given back (if thats even the situation) would be due to the fact that the OSes are completely different in design. A monolithic kernel as opposed to a microkernel... c'mon, these are totally different.

No, not completely different. Take a look at the Darwin kernel; rather a lot of the code under the "bsd" directory is not all that different from the versions in other BSDs. xnu isn't a small kernel plus a pile of servers (but then neither is NT, really - the Win32 subsystem does do a fair amount of stuff, but file system stuff and networking stuff, for example, is all done in kernel mode in NT; "NT" here includes NT 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2, i.e. W2K, WXP, and W2K3 Server).

In all honesty, I don't think FreeBSD has much interest in Mac OS X code unless its aqua or quartz.

That's not true. While I'm not a heavy gamer, I have a number of games going on my FreeBSD system. I DO know of people playing Unreal Tournament 2003 on FreeBSD systems though. My games include: FlightGear, Abuse, Cube, Falcon's Eye, FooBillard (beautiful!), FrozenBubble, glTron, as well as SNES games through emulation. And that's just a tiny number of the 576 games currently in the ports collection.

If something broke with Windows or FreeBSD, she'd still be calling me. So what's the diff? "Hey grandma, to send email click here, type here, then click there." And if you're going to stick a total newbie with something that they're going to call you everytime they have a problem on, why not give them something that doesn't crash all the time?

Do you complain about Windows because it doesn't come with a word processor? No, and if MS tried to bundle Word w/ Windows people would cry foul. So take that to another level. Just because some people can't fathom an OS and the GUI being separate, doesn't mean it's not a good idea. I don't want a GUI on the server, and I like having choices about what window-manager or desktop-environment to run. Yes, KDE and Gnome are pretty resource-intensive. So use xfce then... it's pretty slick. I happen to like Gnome, but I've used KDE too and I'm actually running xfce4 right now just for fun.

That's 100% not true. FreeBSD gives you choice. If you want to compile, you can build ports. If you want to install precompiled binaries, you install packages. Once installed, they are registered in the database (with their dependencies) the same way and are managed in the same manner. A little reading of the FreeBSD ports and packages system would be in order.

No.

For a production server, use RELENG_4_9, the release branch. To get a little more confusing, the RELENG_4 branch is the STABLE development branch.

CURRENT is exacrly that, it's current source and may or may not be stable or useable. STABLE really isn't guaranteed to be "stable", it is still development and isn't for production use. RELEASE is the "stable" release version.

Security fixes for FreeBSD are released as part of the RELENG branch for a particular release version. 4.9 (presumably) includes all the security fixes which were released since the 4.8 release, which were announced on the 4.8 errata page. The 4.9 errata page is here. The security fixes are usually released concurrent with any vulnerability announcement, but it's still up to users to read the handbook and patch their own systems.

FreeBSD releases have -p updates that are typically for Security Fixes. If you look here you'll see all the same Security Advisories that were fixed in a -p update to 4.8. They put the same information in each new release notes just to cover the fact that they were fixed since the original previous release.

4.x series are production releases. 5.x is the new technology releases. There are two development branches to FreeBSD: FreeBSD-CURRENT and FreeBSD-STABLE. This seem confusing but keep this rule in mind if u want to use FreeBSD STABLE branch if you are going use it as a production server else use the current branch more information here.
