Never Happy
These security vendors been taking advantage of the flaws in the windows OS's for years and making tons of money doing it. Great someone needed to do it since MS couldn't or wouldn't. However MS is now trying to hardent heir OS and remove the security holes that should have been removed years ago and what happens? People complain. And by people I mean Symantec, McAfee, etc (not the end user mind you).
I for one am pleased to see MS trying to lock down their systems and these other vendors just need to quite whining. I am sure there will still be plenty left to fix. There always is.

Give this man an Award
I am a big fan of privacy. But I am also a big fan you losing your rights to privacy when you continually break the law in a fashion that puts others at risk, especially minors.
Maybe Myspace is just really that stupid (heck, their site design casues me to thik their programmer can;t be all that bright).

Not to worry
Crappy acting will still be crappy acting. Just like the foley artist is still happily employed enhancing the audio soundtrack (either digitally or old fashined foot stomping). The animator will remain gainfully employed improving and enhancing the final product.

Responsability
We live in the Age of Information. Almost anyone can't post almost anything and make it available to just about everyone (how's that for ambiguos). This is great power. And with great power come great repsonsability (bet you didn'see that coming).
I think the problem may lie in he fact that too many companies don't teach their employees the difference between the internet and their intranet.

Maybe I am a Cynic...
Even with these great tools (and believe me I myself love this),I think the underlying problems willnot change.
1. Just because we can doesn't mean we will.
We have had out feet and a telephone for quite a while now but ordinary citizens rarely make it to town council meetings let a lone make a call to voice their opinion.
and, 2. Even if they did, since when to the politicians ever really listening to their constituants.
Hope this post wasn't too much of a downer. Have a great day.

My predictions were right,,,
I mentioned this on the last post about the Zune. The only way MS can gain marketshare is to come in well below the iPod price. If it is a better product, all the specs will just fly over the heads of most consumers. iPod is "the" MP3 player to the masses and the only thing that will convince them otherwise is price.

Eye Candy Good, Need for super computer bad
I don't mind all the eye candy. Some if it's new, some not. But the thing that baffles me is that Microsoft needs the equivalent of a super computer's worth in graphics processing to make the stuff work. I haven;t seen anyting that I feel warrant that kind of power. Have you seen OpenGL? All the eye candy, and it runs on my old laptop.

Very Interesting study
When you are able to physically distance yourself from the physical aspect of things (you know actually talking to someone), many people seem to be able to overcome their inhibitions. This is a positive thing for many people who for some reason or another have a diffucult time being themselves around others. Of course this distancing also has the power to bring out the idiot in many of us too (you know who you are)!!!

Live CD's, Sissified?
This is the type of elitist attitude that will keep normal users from adopting Linux. The live CD is one of the best ways to prove Linux's viability as a Desktop OS. I can't count the number of Linux users I know that didn't first try it out on a live CD. "...to the point that anyone could do it...", isn't that the idea?

Things could be worse
Be grateful, things could be worse. At least these batteries don't install a rootkit and then spontaneously combust. Sony, Sony, Sony, its a good thing your so loaded. A smaller company would been dust by now.

Uh-OH
We use diebold extensivley at our University for several of our automated transactional systems for students and such. I wonder if we ought to petition to look for another vendor. This incompetence is frightening.

It about time...
It makes me a little nervous with how proprietary Apple is. But someone has to take the lead to make streaming, on demand content a viable option for us. We can't count on the networks. Some have made some meager attempts (i.e., comcast, dish network). But Google and Apple would take in in a whole new direction.

Re:Currently not worth the educational investment
You said 80k? Well, I have been studying (and paying tuition) my entire life and have been teaching for almost twenty years in a so-called demand subject (mathematics). Right now I'm barely clearing 50k. Oh, and I'm one of the better paid teachers at my school, there are other teachers getting paid an adjunct's wage (500 per credit hour) with no benefits.
Please tell me where someone would be willing to pay me 80k?

One Problem..."This is taking the exact opposition approach -- rewarding viewers for taking the time to engage and be interactive with television," said Tom O'Keefe, an executive at Foote Cone & Belding, the advertising agency that created the spot for KFC Corp.
Yet another way in which televisions and all that profit from them are trying *desperately* to become the new interactive medium: GET REAL! People will not go to the trouble of recording a commerical in order to get a single coupon for something that costs $0.99 anyway. If it was a plasma tv, a laptop, something of *value* then people will jump through hoops to get it. Look at freepay.com, people will do all manner of things, even using their valuable sig space on
/. but there is a major difference: These things (iPod, Laptop, PS3, etc) are actually worth the effort. If we wanted to play 'fun' games to gain miniscule rewards, we would already be playing an Xbox or PS2. You can get as many marketing guys from your company to say how great and revolutionary and wonderful and effective this is/will be, but it doesn't change the fact of the matter. This simply won't work. -

Re:47%?
This is really not a matter of public opinion, we have laws that are solely there to protect us from the mob. It really doesn't matter what the mob thinks, we have a right to be left alone.
Now, if you want to get "completely up-in-arms" over our the oppressive government you'll just have to become a freedom fighter, oh I forgot, then you'd become a terrorists. Sorry, just submit and continue to fork over half of your labor (taxes) to our friends protecting us (government) from people like you.
If you want to stop this nonsense you'll have to upset the government's revenue stream. The only way to do that is to get them out of the currency and tax business. Good luck.

Re:They are conservatives. Just not Goldwater ones
You said: "Small government conservatism is personified by Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan, and is also represented by libertarians. However, there are other types of conservatives."
You should listen to Norm Chomsky on this, he clearly states that Reagan, et. al., were big government's best friend.
I'm not sure why people believe Reagan was a good president --- he was absolutely NO LIBERTARIAN, in fact he eroded personal liberties as he expanded Federal and State governments. The growth was unprecedented and he increased the tax burden of the average American many fold.
In a sense, you, like most Americans have been royally hoodwinked.

Piss while standing and the probability for urine to splash beyond the bowl is vastly greater. Just take a look at any public restroom where people tend not to sit and you will see urine almost everywhere.

Re:The Rules
When at home, everyone should sit when going to the bathroom. It's plain filthy to stand. I actually have a sign in my bathroom (bought it in Berlin) that sternly warns against standing. Yes, I am a man, and you'd better politely smile if you question that.

This isn't very bad at all, I was expecting much more... although I can't use it yet as my usb stick is too small. I'll probably get a bigger one eventually and load it with portable apps. The problem with making Microsoft office portable is you couldn't fit it to a stick... it already eats your entire hard drive just installing it.

There are plenty out there which charge 99 cents. The wal-mart music store is cheap and the AOL music now is really good (yes, I know that it is crappy AOL... but I tried their music store and it is actually pretty good).

Ive got 2 NEC DVD burners and I couldn't ask for a better quality in a burner. Although I haven't burned too many discs with them, they havn't failed me yet. On the other hand, I have a Sony CD-RW which I have burned hundreds of CD-R's with and reburned CD-RWs so many times I've lost count and it has never failed to burn a single disc.

Patents like these
It is patents like these that make me think that the US with give a patent to anything without even looking at it.
New idea: patent breathing, and then you will get a royalty everytime anyone takes a breath.

Seems like that if they are able to put the competition out of business, then the quality of parts would degrade over time as they would stop caring to come out with the next best thing to beat the competition.
