Oh, you mean like mencoder?

speaking of C libraries...
DMX4Linux is a project to develop kernel device drivers for DMX dongles and cards. Programming for the driver looks ridiculously simple. But you're probably looking for a more ready-made solution... well, there is the included X program, DMXPanel, but it's no Martin Show Designer. A quick search on Freshmeat brings up a few more full-featured programs, but they're all simple slider-type programs, so you still have to know exactly what's going to happen to your Martin MX400 when you send it "142" on channel 7 -- will it start scanning with a green filter and a spiderweb gobo, or will it just start smoking and turn off?

freshjava.net ?So is there, or should there be, a separate equivalent of Freshmeat.net for all the forthcoming OSS/FS Java, JAR's
... project distributions & updates ...?Looks like freshjava.com was snagged by peddler last September but freshjava.net still available.

Linux Radio Timeshift does the job!
I personally have been using the scripts found at the Linux Radio Timeshift HOWTO for a few months now, and it does the job perfectly. You can listen to a freshly created MP3 as it's still being recorded. Used in combination with a script such as this, you can stream them shoutcast-style from anywhere.
Since there was only one AM radio tuner for a PC that I could find (and it was USB), I installed an external tuner. It ends up looking really cool to have a 1u rackmount tuner in your rack. Of course if I ever wish to tune to another station, a robotic arm must be built, but I'm content for now.

These people care
GPL Projects. There's about 16,000 listed on Freshmeat, and some of them include some good code which should be reused in other projects if possible.
If the new Apache license is GPL compatible, then source code released under that license can be redistributed linked to GPL code. If not, then to redistribute such a combined work you have to have either special permission from the authors of any GPLed components to put additional restrictions on their code or special permission from the authors of the non-GPLed components to rerelease their code with fewer restrictions. Since that's enough of a PITA that it will make code reuse less common, it would be very nice if it wasn't necessary. -
Re:Your retraction is noted but ....
As for phoxix's remarks, I think they were pretty much on the spot.
I find weird the whole notion that we shouldn't expect free software to have super-advanced features like operating laptops at native resolution. There are a ton of things to criticize XF86 about for good reason, but this?
If your laptop allows for some on screen hardware controls, like volume or something, chances are those on-screen controls will work perfectly in Windows, XiG, etc, but not in XFree86.
It's called xosd. -
Re:Help setting this up
I felt this all-weekend pain when trying to setup spamassasain. There didn't seem to be any mention of using it *without* sendmail/qmail/postfix. Because I wanted to use my ISP's SMTP/POP3 servers, and freshmeat searches came up nada on (functioning/completed) pop3 proxies, I ended up writing my own pop3 proxy in perl out of frustration. Funny though, that's how most of my projects begin...

Use tempest effects to control?
I wonder if you could use something like "Tempest for Eliza" to influence the action and get it to 'shake' to an MP3?
Tempest For Eliza is a program that plays music on an on AM radio using RF energy generated by rapidly changing an image on your monitor.

VPEWhat about VPE? It has some niche features that could make it the right choice for certain applications.

Hate responding to myself, but nevermind. Found a Freshmeat link that actually has a newer version than what the link above lists (v2.1). Here's the link for anyone who might be interested. Looks like it might be very useful CD to have around

Re:I know what you mean...
Video games are a source of enjoyment. Without sufficent enjoyment life is not worth living.
If you've given up videogames because it's not a constructive use of your time, you may as well up watching TV, reading, going to the theater and listening to music (and, as you brought it up, you may as well give up every man's number favorite past time, masturbation).
Forgoing videogames does little in the way of helping the rest of humanity, but if it's something you do enjoy it's merely contributing to makeing you a less happy individual.
You maybe tired of video games but I am highly supicious of someone would try to paint it as a personal moral victory, when it's simply something they merely no longer have the time for (often because they are married or have children).
I'm very happy with a balance in my life. I maintain an open source project on Freshmeat.net, run a 'clan'/outfit who play the massively multiplayer FPS PlanetSide and play either Star Wars Galaxies or PlanetSide very nearly every day. Just because I do one, doesn't mean I have to stop doing the other.

Re:OK, I agree to some extend, BUT...
Actually... with all the GTK themes and Gnome themes out there, I don't agree. Sure Mac OS X looks really nice. But the 6nome theme is easily about 95% as nice looking. What I really like about 6nome is that it's pretty original looking too. It doesn't cop the Aqua or Luna looks from the other OSes.

KnoppixMAME
Speaking of Knoppixes for Fun:
KnoppixMAME is a bootable arcade machine emulator with hardware detection and autoconfiguration. It works automatically on all modern and not-so-modern hardware, including gameports and joysticks. It is powered by Knoppix Debian GNU/Linux, X-MAME, and gxmame. -

Re:Would it not be
It's called "freshmeat". Pity slashdot's editors have never heard of it.

Re:Would it not be
like freshmeat?
they used to have a ticker on slashdot, listing the latest new packages. although something for major releases like fedora or a linux kernel would be more what your looking for. and its not a bad idea, considering all the time some people spend on slashdot.

Gentoo Portage is closer than anything.
I would jump on the Portage bandwagon, and continue with that effort. There already a couple projects working toward cross-distro compatibily, for instance Emerde.
Portage has the ability to install RPM's on a Gentoo system. While not as easy as emerging from the source, it has a very wide horizon ahead of it. I am not sure aobut Portage using DEB's though. -
How many legs?
How many legs does that browser have?
Firefox? I thought it was Firebird
Following the link myself... HUH??? What happen? Somebody set up us the bomb? But who? The database?
apt-get install browser-formerly-known-as-firebird?
Wasn't it called phoenix before, and then renamed because they found a PC-related company with that name? So the new version will create a ~/.phoenix, a ~/.mozilla-firebird and a ~/.mozilla-firefox directory including the resulting babelonian confusions?
Did they realize that there already exists a joystick with the name firefox? And a Game PC with the name firefox? And even a Clint Eastwood movie with the name firefox... True to form, there even was a car named firefox, and a tire with that name. Oh, and a company with that name too...
Or will they just switch names again when they figure that out?
And next is the tunderfox?
And then a company in Redmond discovers that somebody already uses the name for their OS to mean glass inside a hole in the wall, causing them to suddenly switch names without thinking of their installed user base? or another company just finding out the name of that big bright thing that lights the sky every day?
Yes, phoenix/firefird/fox is a fine browser, but why the identity problems? -
Re:How creative
The trouble with any name ending 'fox' is that it makes one think of the awful Linux Fox which fortunately never had a chance of being adopted as the Linux logo. There was a Slashdot story about it at the time, but Slashdot's search box is so useless I can't find it.

Re:For your perusal
Not one but two instances of content-free karma whoring! Amazing.
If you're not in a hurry to just download the archive (warning: this is fucking huge, specifically 511MB), let's take a closer look at some of the pertinent points of that licence:
- "You may use this Software for any non-commercial purpose, subject to the restrictions in this License." In other words, no commercial use, which means no inclusion in Linux distributions and such. The only way they want anyone to be able to fetch Allegiance's source code is through their clickwrap licence.
- "If any of the Software is in binary format, you will not attempt to modify such portions of the Software, or to reverse engineer or decompile them, except and only to the extent authorized by law." Too bad if you want to examine the binary data (graphics, audio, maps...) in order to, say, figure out the formats and make your own.
- "Microsoft is granted back, without any limitations and on a royalty free basis, the rights to reproduce, install, use, modify, distribute and transfer your modifications to the Software source code or data." In other words, all your changes are belong to them, and they're thoughtfully granting themselves distribution of your code without the licensing restrictions which you get hammered with!
- "If you breach this MSR-SSLA or if you sue anyone over patents that you think may apply to the Software or anyone's use of the Software, your license to the Software ends automatically and you shall destroy all of your copies of the Software immediately. Section 5 of this MSR-SSLA [the self-granting of unlimited distribution rights, just quoted] shall survive any termination of this license." In other words, if they decide in their infinite wisdom that you're breaking their licence, you have to send all your work into the crapper.
My opinion (for all the piddling amount that an anonymous coward's opinion counts for)? Fuck this and find a Sourceforge or Freshmeat project to chip in on.

Re:SQL-Ledger of course !
I found this article on Freshmeat, Financial Software for Linux that links to some more financial projects availible. I've used GnuCash for a while now for my personal finances and it now has a bunch of business features. It's fairly agreeable and streightforward to use.

Reminds me of xringd
Back when I depended on a dialup connection, I used xringd. By having the phone line the modem was on ring in a certain pattern, I could command the computer to dial up (using diald). Then a line in
/etc/ppp/ip-up.local would mail me the IP address the PPP server assigned the computer (this was before DynIP or DynDNS). I'd then be able to log into the machine. Pretty darn cool for 1996. -

Slashdot/Sourceforge/etc...
This is what Slashdot does (and sourceforge too for that matter), they use one Apache host to serve content and use pound to do the SSL.

Actual Cost of a Virus / SCO
Let's see...
The cost of securing your mail server from viruses includes...
- Download of Antivirus for sendmail
- Installation of said program. (Which is about a day if you factor in moron-ness)
- Keep new viruses in check.
- The cost of 400 yellow post-it notes saying "DO NOT OPEN FILE IF EXE OR SCR!" (as a contingency plan.
The total cost of protecting a company from *all* viruses that go to their business accounts runs around $200 maximum.
Any moron who works at a company and opens said attachment should be fired anyway. So in the long run, the company actually *saves* money by all these worms going out.
So that must mean that SCO must be rewarding the MyDoom author for all the extra money they keep from firing morons at their company that open those attachments. Wait... that can't be right...

Other non-gaming optionsUsing a gaming engine for interior design projects adds limitations and extra work that you wouldn't have to deal with using other visualization technologies. I wouldn't start a project using a gaming engine unless I already had experience and knew exactly what I could do and could not do using those tools. As an engineer, I find it much easier to work with high-level 3D scene definition tools such as VRML and POVray. These let you play with scene definitions using constructive solid geometry (rather than spending your time fine-tuning polygon meshes) and give you much better control over lighting effects, textures, and environments.
Here's one of my forays into architectural design using Moray and POVRay. It took about a half day to do working off of graph paper blueprint sketches. Though it's not interactive, the visual quality (architectural composition aside
:P ) is much cleaner than anything currently available in a game. VRML is a lot like the POV format, for the most part, so some tools should be able to convert from one to the other, allowing you to use VRML to make your designs interactive. Search around on Freshmeat and the like for tools that might be able to handle both formats...Good luck, and have fun!

Re:I went with a Handera 330 insteadSo I wanted something I could use python and pyqt on.... So once you out-grow your HE330, look at the Z again.
What about Palm Python? Okay, limited, no QT, I know.
For my programming needs, the H330 is plenty. There's OnboardC, LispMe, and Dragon Forth. This lets me do the kind of programming I like to do. I recognize that this doesn't fit everyone's needs, but I don't think I'll outgrow my H330 for quite a while.

Re:Elitist Prickdasunt:
I could easily imagine a productive environment based around GNU screen and a terminal-based editor, mail client, news client, and IM client. Throw in something like w3m, and other for images, its good.
Yup, that's pretty close to the way I've worked for most of the last year or two. For me it's screen, of course, along with:
- editor - vim,
- mail client - mutt,
- news client - tin,
- web client(s) - a combination of w3m, lynx, and wget for most downloading tasks,
- spreadsheet - sc, which is surprisingly useful,
- P2P client - mutella, though I think there are console options for other protocols,
- IM/IRC client - irssi along with the fantastic bitlbee (and if you haven't heard of bitlbee before, take a look).
...and then I use good 'ol ratpoison for my window manager in X for the occasions that I need graphics (ie. some web browsing, viewing PDFs, playing graphical games).Strike that. In most cases, multi-tasking can be very counterproductive. Shell escapes and $EDITOR_OF_CHOICE is good enough.
It varies
:-), though I agree generally speaking. I'm using KDE3.2beta at the moment for a bit of a change, though most of the action is still inside my screen(1) terminal(s). You do tend to (or at least I tend to) find yourself more productive when you don't have stray graphical bits and pieces around the place to distract you.Of course if you need the GUI for your normal working environment (ie. you're developing a GUI app), then, well there's not much you can do but live with it.
Pete. :) -
