BeauHD -- DIGITAL logo =/= digital tech
This story was posted with this Slashdot-icon:
https://a.fsdn.com/sd/topics/t...
This graphic is the logo for Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). This company was a Really Big Deal decades ago - in fact, I bet a lot of Slashdot readers were formerly employed by DEC. Citation needed?
Although the DEC logo uses the word "digital", it does not represent all things that are digital. Putting this label on a story about something "digital" is like putting Mickey Mouse ears on any story involving animation. It's just not correct, and it's a bit abrasive to the brain.
Could the editors stop using this icon unless it's a story related to the Corporation Fomerly Known as DEC?

A plain link, using the image https://a.fsdn.com/sd/topics/f... - fsdn.com seems to be a sourceforge domain. On this one thing
/. comes out clean. No facebook tracking. -

Re:You forgot WebAssembly!
Since you feel so strongly about this subject, and you're posting on slashdot, I'm sure you (or someone you hired?) have audited the 29k lines of code at https://a.fsdn.com/sd/all.js which get loaded on this very page (well, actually https://a.fsdn.com/sd/all-minified.js gets loaded, but I'm dangerously assuming that the former is the original version of the latter). So did you find anything suspicious? When was the last time those files got updated?
If you haven't actually inspected that JavaScript file, would you agree that your concerns are completely theoretical and that nobody is really going to bother to spend hours reading JavaScript for every new domain they visit (or spend thousands of dollars hiring a consultant to do so)? Given that the vast, vast, vast majority of people have come to like and expect the kind of behavior that scripts in the browser provide, wouldn't it be much more effective to do things such as lobby for user/browser tracking to be outlawed, inventing better tracking protection, etc.? Opposing scripts in the browser sounds like a technical solution to a social problem, which rarely work.

Re:We should never expect or accept tracking
Here's what Adblock shows me for this page. Yeah, some of it is totally innocent, but the rest of it? Why do all of these things need to be loading? (I removed a lot of extra crap that seemed benign to get by the "you need more characters in your message" filter.)
And who thinks that gstatic.com isn't using their Google Plus icone (gplus-16.png) as a beacon?

Of course the database should be red. Why else would slashdot's logo for databases be a red wheelbarrow?

Slashdot uses Arial and VW uses VAG
Anyhow, the problem that I have with sans-serif fonts is that they look childish.
From Slashdot's CSS: body { margin: 0; font:13px/1.5 Arial,sans-serif; background: rgb(204,204,204);} Or is Slashdot likewise childish? Is Volkswagen's branding childish?
That's what you see in books for children, when they are learning to read.
That's not what I remember seeing for the text in The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. It looks like Times.

Slashdot is pretty "lightweight" and yet:
The size of JS embedded on this page I'm replying from is 33K in about 890 lines of code.
Externally loaded libraries are (most minimified):

I once gave phpvirtualbox a spin on the server.
http://a.fsdn.com/con/app/proj...It's actually quite an awesome way to operate single visualization servers.
Though i did find it not stable enough in the end and switch over to KVM.There is definitely still some potential left for virtualbox here though.

The images will prevent me from reading Slashdot at work. The plain text layout one of the reasons I can read it here without setting off alarms.
Of the images on the page:
Some guy's head adds no meaning or context to the story.
That's Edward Snowden, the guy the article's about.

A video game guy with a gun means I better block images or I'll be unable to read Slashdot at work. Which means probably never given my lack of time at home. That sucks because Slashdot is very relevant to what I do. Just today I sent the Microsoft Azure story to our director. I would hate to have to create a separate work account that filters out stories about games.

Stock photos are funny
I like that, for a piece about software defined data centers, the stock photo that gets in the way of the content is of hardware that you'd find on a desktop.
Really? A closeup shot of a row of what appears to be Dell(tm) desktop systems? C'mon
/. editors, you can do better. Oh wait, they're Dice editors now...well shit. -

Re:Amazing
Rocketing up to +5 with an anti-Apple post, I see, but this kind of stupidity in patent-land has been going on a long time. I mean, come on--Slashdot has had a knife-fork-spoon icon for "patents" for quite some time, and for a reason. 1-click purchasing, anyone?
October 1999: Amazon.com Receives Patent for 1-Click Shopping
May 2006: Amazon One-Click Patent to be Re-Examined
October 2007: USPTO Rejects Amazon's One-Click Patent
November 2007: Amazon Sneaks One-Click Past the Patent System
March 2010: Amazon 1-Click Patent Survives Almost Unscathed
... to trot out just one example. -
Microsoft logo needs an update
The Microsoft logo used for this story is outdated.
-
Re:Awesome...
(1) What "icon" is KingBenny talking about? I don't see any.
He's talking about that icon: http://a.fsdn.com/sd/topics/patents_64.png
It is just right to the title of the summary, don't you see it ? it's a fork, a spoon and a knife with a "patent pending"label to underline the absurdity of broad and obvious patents.

Re:GOD DAMN IT, THIS IS WHY I AVOID REDDIT!
On the bright side the facebook icon comes from http://a.fsdn.com/sd/commentshareicons.png and it's fused with the g+ and t ones. So unless you click on them facebook isn't getting any tracking info.
But yes, the problems of slashdot could be simplified as "does not understand it's userbase" we could said that slashdot is doing an ubuntu, trashing their users wishes and hoping for "better users". Given the huge fraction ofr slashdot readers who use adblock, they might even be right, Maybe that's the whoe point attracting the same low common denominator from reddit and turning away the senior members who, in many ways make Slashdot what it is.
I miss cmrTaco so much.
-
Re:Uhm...
Even while you're viewing this very page, there are icons for Twitter, Facebook, and Google which must be loaded from their site
Actually, those images are loaded from http://a.fsdn.com/sd/commentshareicons.png.
Tinfoil hat fail.
Yes, most of them don't care. I don't care either.

Re:No mention of CmdrTaco retiring?
Plus, the mysterious disappearance of the Bill Gates as a Borg icon for Microsoft stories,,, (It just about managed to survive to the latest "not as good as the HTML 3 version"[1] relaunch with a crappy illustrated version, but that seems to have disappeared in place of a generic Microsoft logo on new stories...
Slashdot just isn't right anymore...
[1] If anyone does know how to use this newfangled Javascript based comment system, just don't bother telling me how to use it, like all sensible people I turned it off when it was first introduced years ago, and have no intention of learning how it works./p

Re:Lose the Borg Face
No, nothing so extreme in the other direction either. How about, oh say putting up a non-troll image that represents Windows. Say the four color window icon.
Have you seen the windows topic icon? It's not much better.

You missed the icon for this story. It's a chalkboard that says "2 - 2 = 5"

Re:headless camel
Yes, the artist made a mistake: the image http://a.fsdn.com/sd/topics/topicperl.gif is too wide to fit into the template. Hopefully it will be noticed now.
Don't count on that. It's been that way for some time now, and nobody with the ability to fix it seems to care. One of the former slashdot programmers was a regular voice on use.perl and he never bothered to fix it; I highly doubt anyone still working for slashdot gives a damn about it.
By the way, how do we report bugs about Slashdot?
Carrier pigeon, sent to the ISS.
Or at the very least, that would be just as useful as any other mechanism. Slashdot doesn't care about fixing bugs, just about implementing new ones. You can email rob malda directly (malda@slashdot.org) if you want, and he'll weasel his way around the problem in a reply to you. Or you can just do like the rest of us and bitch about the bugs openly here on slashdot instead. It also doesn't lead to them being fixed, but you can take credit for being the first to find a specific bug! -
Re:headless camel
Yes, the artist made a mistake: the image http://a.fsdn.com/sd/topics/topicperl.gif is too wide to fit into the template. Hopefully it will be noticed now. By the way, how do we report bugs about Slashdot?

Re:This is good to know
Yes, it's the Twitter update in the screenshot that reads "Go away helicopter - before I take out my giant swatter
:-/"...
