"Am I Hot" TV show NOT related to website!
The "Am I Hot" TV show was not a derivitive of the AmIHotOrNot website.
Long before AmIHotOrNot.com - hell, long before there was a WWW (we're talking 1991 and perhaps prior) - Howard Stern's radio show featured a frequent segment called "The Evaluators." Women would come in, typically get naked, and a panel of judges would rate them from 1 to 10. The segment involved the use of a laser pointer with which judges would point to various good/bad parts of the model's body. While the laser pointer obviously did nothing for the radio show, it went over well on the E! channel's TV version of his program.
Enter a man named Scott Einziger. He used to be the producer of the E! television channel's "Howard Stern" show, which features highlights of the radio show. He was also the producer of Howard's short-lived Saturday night show on CBS TV, which was similar to the long-running (and still running) E! show. He was a friend of Howard's, and definitely an insider as far as the radio/TV shows were concerned.
Scott quit working for E! and Howard in 2001, to pursue a career as a "real" network television producer at ABC. His first gig was as co-producer of "The Amazing Race," ABC's attempt at reality TV. This year, ABC introduced "Am I Hot?" Scott Einziger, ex-Stern-groupie, was the producer. The show was a complete and total rip of the Stern segment, right down to the laser pointers. The entire concept of the "Am I Hot?" TV show was taken from Howard Stern. The AmIHotOrNot website had absolutely nothing to do with it.
And now you know the rest of the story.

Re:Stacked chips
perhaps stacked wafers with vertical interconnects might help... I'm not sure how you'd dissipate the heat, though.
That's an easy one! Between each wafer, you place a delightful creme filling. The filling would be of such consistency that no matter how hot the wafers are allowed to get, the creme does not melt.
I propose we call this new technology Overall Reduction of Exothermic Output, or OREO for short.

I'd be interested in a Slashdot poll..
..about the current state of gaming. Something like,
I like to play games on:
My PS2
My XBox
My GameCube
My N64
My Computer
2+ of Above Choices
CowboyNeal's couch
Seriously, excluding the obCowboyNealReference, I'm really interested in a breakdown. I used to be terribly addicted to console games, starting with an Atari 2600, then moving to the NES and the SuperNES. Once I discovered computers, console gaming lost all its magic to me and although I've played on friends' PS, PS2, and even a 3DO, I never really got into consoles again.
Would be cool to see a survey of how many people still use console games nowadays, vs those who game only on their computer, vs those who don't care about games at all (except in the toxic waste dump that is CowboyNeal's couch ;)

Even better
The best part about the "SCO to Shoot Babies" story is that someone posted it to a thread here at Slashdot, and Google News found it. A search at Google News for sco execs dumping stock brings up the story. Apparently their scraping engine looks for standard byline formats ("By John Doe. City, ST - Something is happening") and pulled the fake news story from the Slashdot article.
For awhile, it was even on the front page of Google News.

Re:microsoft is dying and gates is leaving the shi
Gates has sold over 6 million shares in August alone
You should probably look at the link before posting it. Yes, Gates has sold 6 million shares in August, big deal. Bill owns more than a billion shares of the company; to him, 6 million shares is a drop in the bucket. If he continues to sell 6 million shares a month, it would take him more than 16 years to divest himself of all his shares. He ain't exactly pulling a McBride.
If you scroll down the list, you'll note that he's sold that many shares or more most months dating back to October 2001. He sold more than 10 million shares in both June and August of last year. The fact that he's sold 6 million shares this month is hardly an indication that he's "leaving the ship."

Re:Disturbing
Let's say I have a single lock on the handle of my front door... with no dead bolt. Along comes someone and kicks the door open and proceeds to rob my house. While he's robbing my house he steals a cd that I borrowed from my friend. Are you saying that *I* should be arrested because I failed to install an adequate dead bolt on my front door and thus the robber stole a cd that didn't belong to me?
You're comparing apples to oranges. In fact, you're comparing apples to... zebras, or something not even closely related.
The first distinction is that in your example, your friend willingly loaned you the CD. I don't think anyone has intentionally "loaned" their personal information to Acxiom. Before the initial story was reported here, I'd never heard of Acxiom, though various articles proclaim them to be [one of] the biggest data-mining compan[y|ies] around. If they have any data on me, I sure as hell didn't loan it to them.
The second problem with your analogy is that a CD is nothing like personal data. A CD is a vanity, something worth maybe $15, less now that it's used. Acxiom has been described as serving "most top credit card companies and retail banks." What do you think the credit card or bank details of a single person - much less however many people were affected by this breach - are worth? That $15 CD pales in comparison. What's adequate? Let's say I did install a dead bolt but the robber was sophisticated enough to pick both locks? In this case I shouldn't be arrested because I had "adequate" security and was victimized by a "skilled" robber who had the proper knowledge that surpassed my own in lock technology?
Your analogy fails here as well. You, as a private citizen, do not have any liability for the stolen items. Your friend loaned you the CD, there was no business agreement surrounding that friendly exchange. Acxiom is a business, the rules are different.
Suppose you rent a storage facility at one of those mini-storage places. Their property is surrounded by a chainlink fence complete with razorwire. The gate requires a keycode to enter. Each bay is padlocked. Now let's say some joker breaks into the place, gets into your bay and steals everything you have stored there. Surely a fence with razorwire, key-coded facility access, and padlocks are "adequate" security... But you're damn sure that the mini-storage company would be liable for your loss, unless that was covered in your contract with them.
But, see, none of us have a contract with Acxiom.
Acxiom is liable, one way or another.

I'd rather see a distributed tool
I have to admit looping fetch/wget in a few cases where I was repeatedly and persistently spammed by some sites. They did invite me to visit, after all, and the spam didn't ask me to limit my browsing to 1 hit. I've daydreamed a few times about a distributed "spam spider" where thousands of people run a client which sits in the background, fetching spamvertised websites. The client would retrieve a fresh list of sites to visit every hour or so.
The only hole in the idea is finding a trusted, centralized moderator (or moderators) to control the list of spamvertised sites. The RBL model has shown repeatedly that the individuals in charge of such lists will occasionally use them to further a personal vendetta of some sort. But with the right person at the helm, someone who receives a lot of spam and can identify real spam from joe-jobs, it might just be possible to maintain a rolling database of sites promoted in spam.

Monopoly no, doomed yes
So, is there some monopoly going on here ?
Not monopolistic at all, but it sounds doomed to me, unless Robertson manages to sell a few major corporations on the technology.
This reminds me a great deal of the Nextel "walkie-talkie" service: extremely innovative and convenient as hell, but only if you're talking to another Nextel user, otherwise it's worthless. The "nationwide walkie-talkie" service that Nextel offers is only compatible with other Nextel users; you can't, for example, "walkie-talkie" to a Verizon cellphone user.
Two words come to mind when thinking of SIPphone: proprietary, incompatible. Unless it's adopted by a couple of major corps, it's never going to take off.

Damn, that rules me out!
We invite all emerging and established digital artists, filmmakers, and storytellers to submit works in the following competitive categories: Animation, Short Subject, New Forms, and Gallery.
I guess this rules out my homemade pr0n movies. Unless, of course, they'd qualify for the "short subject" category...

GUIs in Python...
I think the current state of GUIs for Python is that there is no best choice for GUIs. The major decisions are:
Which OS?
only unix == wxPython or GTK
only MS Windows (eg, needing ActiveX support) == wxPython or MFC
MS Windows or unix == wxPython or Tkinter
MS Windows or unix or MacOS == Tkinter
MacOS and anything else == Tkinter
How much native look and feel for different platforms? If a lot, then wxPython is a better choice for X and MS Windows along with Tkinter.
Do you need a good canvas object? Tkinter is the best solution there.
How stable should the API be? I understand wxWindows' API changes quite a bit between versions. I know one place who developed their own API on top of wxPython's to insulate themselves better. Tkinter's is rock solid. I think GTK's is pretty well established.
How much interaction do you want with the local environment? I want to take a serious look at what can be done with GNOME components for bio&chem, so gtk is the best solution - but maybe wxPython allows access to the gtk parts of things? For MS Windows, wxPython is pretty good at working with other MS Windows codes (eg, you can embed ActiveX inside
a wxWindows display). On the other hand, Visual Basic is very good at that, so a pure Windows solution could use VB for the interface and Python for backend COM components. (That's best if the GUI is mostly menus, forms, etc. For 3D GUIs, like structure visualization, I would use Python.)
How much documentation do you want? Tkinter has a lot. Gtk's is growing (eg, there's a book out now, or at least soon), but in Dr.
Dobb's a couple of months ago, the said that a lot of the more complicated or interesting stuff is still missing. wxPython's is okay, but again it isn't fully documented.
There are other choices, like Qt. Don't know about that toolkit and don't know of anyone using the Python bindings for it. FLTK runs on MS Windows and X, but doesn't provide native feel for either system and doesn't have a very fancy widget set (but still good enough for VMD, a molecular viz. program I helped develop).
Bioreason uses GTK for Unix. I mentioned another site using wxPython and they developed GUIs for MS Windows.
Neither distribute their prorgrams so they don't need to worry about multiple platforms. Both were happy about it the GUI toolkit. Guido uses Tkinter and is worried about multiple platform support.
If I were doing biopython for commercial reasons, I would most likely choose wxPython because it does have good MS Windows support (where the money is) and does run well under Unix (where my heart is). If I were doing it for the cool technology factor, I would choose gtk because of the GNOME support. If I were doing it for widest possible use, I
would use Tkinter. As it is, I'm not doing GUIs, so I don't have to decide :)
Not much help, was I? Okay, then my final statement is that I've found that the GUI is not that large a part of applications I've worked on, and can be written in such a way that different GUIs can be used with only minimal change to the internals. So it doesn't matter much what you choose.
