Re:Extensions Again
"For me, Forecastfox and IE View"
When it comes to weather, I have never had a problem with this nifty little program. I don't know who installed it, but I have been pretty happy with it. Another Firefox extension that I found most useful was this. ::thumbsup:: (y)(y) -
For all the wrong reasons...For all the reasons to get control away from the US, there seems to be some very disingenuous reasoning in this article. If this was about Brazil's tax collection structure, then everything there should just point at
.br's root servers which Brazil has full control.Suppose the worse case scenario, and the US decides to "wage unilateral info-war on Brazil", they redirect everything under
.br to point to http://www.gator.com/. If everything in Brazil goes through Brazil's root DNS, this action will have no effect.Whether you like the The Great Firewall of China or not, China has demonstrated that it is possible to create their own partition of the internet completely subject to their own rules. If Brazil was worried about that, they could do something similar (not the censorship aspect, but having their own net).
This is nothing more than typical politicking at its worst. Ambassadors trading blowjobs, in the hope to gain poltical bargaining chips that they can use next time the US pisses everyone off.

Difference between Opera and Gator?
Both are adware. Opera has ad supported version and a paid version, gator has the same. But why does Microsoft AntiSpyware detect Gator but not Opera? I think Microsoft is showing favortism to Opera.

Re:Password Safeoooh, i have an idea: password gator
"this Desktop Pal(tm) remembers all your passwords for you! free download from the well known gator corporation"
i thought it was funny until i looked to make sure the company was called gator (and not just the product). i was surprised to find the gator ewallet that fills out forms, holds passwords, and encrypts stuff, and now i don't know what to say. -
The Australian parliament asks.....
...that to help them with the task of collecting evidence that you install this helpful program which automatically remembers login IDs/passwords and fills in online forms with just one click.

Re:WhenUGetSued...
Afterall, in most cases the user has "agreed" to allow these programs to run by installing something without fully reading the terms of service.
With this assumption in place, fine... and now the user has decided to identify all software of that class that they "agreed" to install and decided to uninstall it (of course, you and I know there is plenty of spyware that assumes permission if you use the right kind of web browser).
But you do bring up an interesting issue about classification. Why does common antivirus software have definitions for ElfBowling (a game) and BO2K (remote administration)? And why don't they have definitions for spyware? And while I can understand how usefull it is to have all these definitions... exactly what does any of this have to do with a virus?
That may be the reason why this group caved... not that money changed hands, but the threat of a lawsuit was waived around.
Of course, the real issue is companies who wish to avoid the "spyware" moniker... even if we know better. -
I don't see the problem at all!
Luckily I have Gator for remembering all my passwords!
-
Re:Don't
I don't have any trouble with that, since I saw a pop-up that offered this awesome program that remembers all those passwords for you! Now I never forget my passwords...

Re:KeePass for Windows

Humorless mods are gonna kill me on this one.
I don't get it, I thought Gator already had all these features.

Re:Firefox artworkThe artwork identifies the software. Usually free software has good enough quality that people don't have to worry about official builds.
Of course you have to worry about official builds, so that you don't get this build:#include <offical.artwork.h>
Or, for those who don't read C++: I prefer an official artwork that identifies an official build, because that makes it easier for me to avoid non-standard and possibly suborned copies.
#include <trojan.h>
int main( int argc, char** argv ) {
trojan::pwned CATS( "All Your Base Are Belong to Unofficial Build" ) ;
actLikeNormalBuild( "/images/official/firefox.jpeg" ) ;
}
And yes, someone will argue, "trojan writers would just steal the artwork too, only the md5sum is proof!", and while that's true, let's also keep in mind there are Trojan writers who try scrupulously to stay within the law and would be deterred from violating copyright, while at the same time showing a complete lack of ethics, such as Gator/Claria and Bonzi Buddy. -
Do unto others as.....This Site contains an e-mail Form system you can use to express to Gain exactly how you feel.
Use of something like Spam Motel highly recomended.
If you prefer another method of sharing your feelings. By all means SnailMail: GAIN Publishing, Inc. 2000 Bridge Parkway, Suite 100 Redwood City, CA 94065.
Their Fax Number is plainly listed as: 650-232-0400
For people in Redwood City, CA they even provide a MAP of their location -
Re:How about Gator?
Interesting reading. I would definitely use an open-source virus scanner. Especially if you could customize the definitions or download "packs" for it. You could have a "Spyware Pack" that would have defs for Spyware programs like Gator, etc.
And you know that somebody would make a "Micro$oft Pack" with defs that will actually detect a virus if you install, say, MSN Messenger or WMP. That would be good for a laugh. -

Re:Innocent Until Proven Clueful
You mean Claria.
From Gator.com:
The Gator Corporation is now Claria Corporation. To visit the Claria Corporation website, please click here. -
Re:centralization == badWhy not have it all be stored client-side and just have the user click a button to send everything?
I can think of a great little program that can help you with that! Oh, and BTW, your system may not be optimized, it's broadcasting an IP to hackers, and your clock isn't accurate.

Totally off-topic...and posted anon because I modded on this page.
Change your sig. If you want google to associate correctly, you need to have that in links, thusly:
Here's some spyware for you.
Here's some more spyware for you.
It's true. Claria is spyware even though they changed their name because Gator was spyware, too.Love,
BadDoggiewoof.

Re:Minor correction...
Wanna see what evil will be appearing on your network soon? Source: Claria
Date-Manager
Gator E-Wallet
Weatherscope
www.precision-time
gainpublishing
Searchscout
I know I've seen several of these installed already on our systems at work.
Once spyware, always spyware. -
These guys aren't the sharpest tool....in the tool box. But they are tools.
So they change the Name of the company and the website, but forgot to rename Gator(R) eWallet ! Yeah, cause I'd trust these folks with any of my financial info.
-
Google
Strangely enough, searching for Gator brings up www.Gator.com, which takes you to www.Claria.com, but search for Claira brings up websites about Claria headsets, I wonder how they're going to get round this.

One word...GATOR
Without any doubt in my mind, the most evil form of spyware I am personally aware of is the infamous insidious Gator. Booo, hisss!!!! I am sure there are others, but I'm sure of this: there is a special place in hell for these folks. -
Would you trust any company who use this logo?
Hmm a shifty looking Alligator peering over a wall?

Re:Me first
Not to mention that you can't uninstall gator by normal means. The %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\CMEII\ directory is hard to find if you're joe user, and oh, is that on purpose that the registry keys for gator.com don't disappear after I uninstall? Oh that's right, according to the Terms of service, those are 'enhancement technologies' and they don't necessarily get removed during the uninstall.. Interestingly enough, this information is listed under the 'Right to Remove' section in the Terms Huh!?!

Customer Testimonial
I love the customer testimonial.
"I LOVE GATOR! It is the GREATEST! I love how it remembers and fills in all of my passwords at the various websites that I visit. And of course I also love how it fills in the forms for me. I also love GATOR because it is very easy to use. I learned how to use it in seconds. GATOR RULES!" -Thanks, S. Rubin, Las Vegas, Nevada
Either S. Rubin isn't aware that to "fill in" this information automatically it must, in fact, KEEP TRACK OF IT (no matter, it doesn't send THAT information to anyone, right?), or perhaps she is employed by or a partner of Gator, Inc. Either way, I think she should change her name to S. Rube.

Re:Well, it is.An AC rants:
Gator is not spyware! Gator is crap. It gets itself installed in a way that is not very ethical. It takes up valuable system resources. It sucks in a multitude of different ways. But Gator is not spyware.
Take a look at Gator's front page. Read the bit on the right. Note this line:These GAIN ads are displayed based on the interests of the computer user as reflected by their web surfing behavior and are not sponsored or endorsed by the web pages being viewed.
How is that not spyware again? -
Re:Me firstIt's Spyware. The bastards admit it themselves. On their FRONT PAGE:
This software also occasionally displays various forms of pop up ads in a separate window on users' computer screens. These GAIN ads are displayed based on the interests of the computer user as reflected by their web surfing behavior and are not sponsored or endorsed by the web pages being viewed.
They've got a bloody cheek suggesting otherwise. -

Re:Top ten Windows apps to install.
AOL allows you to get "content" that you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else.
Gator allows all sorts of useful searching and ads on your computer.
MSN explorer A very nice web browser that takes over your whole web experience.
Webshots is a very nice background rotator that hogs bandwidth and proccesor time and whaterver else it does.
Weatherbug is a handy little sys-tray app that shows the weather, and watches your every move.
So if you are willing to listen to all the "help" given here on /. You will have the buggiest bulkiest computer there is.
Although some essential programs include...
xmms,Mozilla (most incarnations are great), Gimp (The best FREE image editor)
Also check out Easy URPMI for obtaining linux software. -
Re:Keychain
"Built into every Mac is a utility called Keychain that remembers all your passwords for you. Of course you can get add-ons for Windows that give the same functionality for a price..."
At the price of security and privacy, you might say. gator.com -
Re:that's cute
I'd settle for a worm that downloaded a kernel and loadlin.exe.
You actually don't need a worm for that. Most users aren't savvy enough to know what an ActiveX installer is so they simply "click yes". We wouldn't have the Gator problem that exists if users were just a bit more educated (or MS software wasn't so exploit-able).
If you could create a distro that installed and co-existed on an NTFS partition, you'd have a winner. Heck, you could even give users the option to "remove my windows partition" once they started using it.
IMHO - Linux on NTFS is the first step to widespread adoption. Users would be able to install it through Windows via a regular InstallShield or whatever... -
Re:The ads probably should be legal

cut out the middle-man
how about this idea instead, they take out gator and any other nasties they include.
they can keep the money, we'll just call it even.

Re:Gator's Intranethttp://gator.com/debian/dists/
Clickable link, my bad.
Yeah I'm pulling 300k/s+ off of them
... perhaps this should be mentioned to the debian mailing list, God knows I'd hate for their bandwidth to be used up. -
Gator's Intranet
Interesting, I went to look at www.gator.com, but the first time round I typed gator.com instead. Apparently Gator has a Debian mirror, but you can't access it from the outside. (No doubt it will disappear soon after it gets Slashdotted.)

Re:Next generation ads (IMHO)
Would this be considered a text ad? I'd say so, unless you want to classify it into a new class, like 'integrated ad.'
Gator does things similar ot this. It "watches" what you do, and presents competitor coupons and such. Aside from the fact it's annoying as all hell, it's decent adware software. They get really high click through rates, and it actually is a cool idea. When you look at a book at Amazon, it'll tell you, "IF you go to Barnes & Noble and buy this, we'll give you 5% off"
Annoys Amazon, but it sure as hell works. It's like the legal mafia of advertising. -
In one minute..
256,000 spam emails (or DMCA violation notices, if you prefer)
160,000 banner ads
85333 pages serves of Are You Hot or Not
3,200 copies of Gator
1,066 2 minute average quality porn clips
10 pirated copies of Windows XP home edition
I can't wait for Internet2! -
All you have to do is
Just install this software. Trust me, you'll wish you had your VIC back.
-
Already Been Done
That was Gator's business model over a year ago. Except they literally replaced ads on web pages that the user went to. Fortunately, the court system has consistently blocked them
-
Sounds like...
Sounds like the next expansion-market for Gator if you ask me.
