Re:That really sucks
But his crime was faking a sign-off from Christoph Hellwig. Is this the example we want for young kernel programmers?

Calm down, ESR. And they were British-born with links to Pakistan. Just to make sure you understand what this mean: Pakistan isn't Arab.

Re:Inaccurate
Canonical Ltd. is a major financial sponsor of Ubuntu, but (AFAIK) provides very little guidance of the project.
Um right. Oh and if you think that's just some humorous speculation, look at what Bruce Perens had to say:I actually considered going to work with Canonical when Mark [Shuttleworth] was starting it, and there were a couple of problems with that. I think that Mark is eventually interested in having a successful and profitable company, and I don't believe that Linux distributions are a natural fit for for- profit enterprise. Indeed, if you go on my website I have a very long paper on the economics of open source, and one of the things that you can derive from that is the fact that open source works almost worst for a for-profit Linux distribution.
...
As far as Canonical is concerned, one thing that struck me about Mark is that he really insists on control. For example, when I considered being an employee one of the things standing in the way was the fact that Mark doesn't give his employees stock in his companies. If I'm going to work for someone I'm going to be a little entrepreneurial about it, so I felt that although Ubuntu and Canonical could do a great deal for Debian and be excellent community members, they were never going to be the core, and we could actually get closer to the core by following what I have set up for UserLinux.
"Little guidance" indeed. -
Business model?
Hm. I always thought this was the real business model of Ubuntu.

Re:Feedback needed - Prior Art
I've been thinking about retrofitting an iPod into my ass. Do you think that would make a good slashdot story?
What you are talking about has precedents, http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/eler-2006- prediction-outtake in the "everybody loves Eric Raymond"
series (don't judge them by this link, please, they have some good material) -

Re:They call hackers researchers now?

free "developers... developers... developers"...If you've seen the microsoft censorship on Everybody Loves Eric Raymond, you'll find this announcment a little disturbing.
After all from what I understand, Microsoft is looking at exploiting the open source model of development for getting free developers. I very much doubt they would go down a path where they transfer the entire copyright of the codebase to a non-profit organization (like Netscape/AOL and Mozilla Foundation).
Then again, with Safari working very decently - who needs IE on Mac ?
I can almost picture Steve Ballmer - "developers ... developers ... developers *aside* heh, suckers" -

Bruce, given that stuffing ballots with dead voters is a major concern, how do you retain credibility now that you too are (kind of) dead?

Slipping of MS's radar?
My wife, upon hearing of this, suggested that if something like this could happen maybe I haven't made enough trouble for Microsoft lately, and I'm slipping off their radar. She might have a point...
Come on, ESR is pretty much off everyone's radar at the moment and has been for some time. The problem is that he doesn't DO anything much - as opposed to RMS and Linus who are of continuing significance. Seriously, aside from posting about gun rights and racial IQ differences on his blog, what does ESR get up to these days that anyone really cares about?
-
How insulting
"I'd thank you for your offer of employment at Microsoft, except that it indicates that either you or your research team (or both) couldn't get a clue if it were pounded into you with baseball bats. What were you going to do with the rest of your afternoon, offer jobs to Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds?"
Right, because we all know ESR is on the same level with those two guys because he's responsible for uh... What exactly did he do?

self promoting corporate shill
That John Dvorak is a self-promoting corporate shill is only the opinion of myself and millions of others. That he's a misinformed idiot is just self-evident.
