If you're serious about a "modeless" interface, it is hard to get less "modal" than a shell command line.

The Perl guru Rick Klement (who really likes to build specialized Tk GUIs) once commented that the reason you never see any real advances in GUIs is that the programmers who set out to develop new GUIs usually start by writing a GUI for an IDE and then quickly realize that command line interfaces are better than GUIs for for IDEs. User configurability of a GUI environment is, in a sense, user programmability. Therefore, one has to wonder whether the power given up by a GUI really buys your users enough to make up for the loss compared to, say, better text-based facilities.

For example, more flexible and forgiving parsers with better command line generation tools (a simple example being command histories with arrow keys retrieval in shells) can go along way toward simplifying text entry in computer-understandable form.

Recently, Dan Brumleve has been showing some simple extensions to Perl at Perl Mongers meetings that make writing Perl statements lines more natural and powerful -- like the determiner "it" meaning the default variable "$_" so you can say things like "store it" and the interpreter knows what you are talking about. He's put in a variety of adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc.

Other, equally simple extensions to the parsing of a general language can make it a lot more flexible, accessible and forgiving. Automated composition assistants could pop up when they think they can help you compose text for the command line.

Graphical interfaces are ideal for interacting with numeric continua (continuous spaces), but most abstract information is in the form of rules or natural laws derived from observations of continua. Humans are always trying to abstract their sensory perception into such codified knowledge so they can more parsimoniously speak of their inner worlds, which reflect their private interpretation of shared sensory information, to each other.

AOL also have absolutely no idea of Linux filesystems either. The silly people put the entire app [libraries, binaries, docs] in /usr/lib/aol. Not that other Linux non-aware companies, like Citrix and Adobe, don't do the same. You might want to:
mkdir /usr/local/aol
ln -s /usr/lib/aol /usr/local/aol

Oh, and the README forgot to mention you need to add /usr/lib/aol in /etc/ld.so.conf, and run ldconfig once you're done.

If we did not have the electoral college this mess would be over with already. The popular vote would have put a new president in office. The current system is like watching a football game in which a team wins by ten points and then being told that the team that actually won did not really win.

Thank you for your concern and taking the time to express your feelings and thoughts about me. Words cannot express how much you have touched me, you have brought me to the point where I feel that I really need to take some time off and do some deep introspective thinking. Thank you again.

I would like to point out just a few places where you are in error though, maybe that will help you to better understand my plight, and my mission here at slashdot.

1) I never posted anything yesterday that said it was my final post, in fact my account was disabled yesterday due to some misunderstanding with the slashdot administrators.

2) I have never posted under another nick, if someone posted as me then they were quite frankly an imposter. I'm hurt that you would not give me the benefit of the doubt.

3) I have never misrepresented myself in any posts nor have I ever tried to. I sincerely apologize if you feel that way.

4)The webiste links were an honost mistake, I thought they were updated but they were not. In fact you can go to this page now to see an open apology to the slashdot community for my behaviour

I've given up trolling for good BTW. Anyways, I think that Debian rocks hard and I hope they stick to their guns, I respect them for beeing the one true free release. And yes, I'm talking about Gnu/Linux, I have traded emails with RMS (for real, he's actually very pleasant in email, try it sometime) and RMS has swayed me to believe we should call it Gnu/Linux.

I wrote a little perl-to-PHP conversion utility that I would love to see in the next Debian release include it but not any of the commercial releases. In fact I am going to set up the download so it checks the version of Debian you are using before allowing you to download or install it. Dirty pool, maybe, but when I told RMS I was going to do it he gave me his blessing ( in so many words anyways )

I put the emails from RMS on my (now troll free) website if anyone is interested.

Thing is companies are always out to get as much money as they can from the copyright. Including suing people for passing out their games. Just like the Video Game Console people suing over emulators and ROMs being passed around.

If these products were hardware based, like someone made audio cards and then dropped support for them, would they sue people making Windows 2000 and Linux drivers for them and hosting the old DOS/Win3.1/Win95 drivers?

I myself have some Abandonware Links at my web site. I hope that they don't get shut down. Too often old copies of games suffer from bit-rot and stop working. It is good to be able to download a backup in a ZIP file just in case.

Infamous Senate anti-music hearings are staged by Senator Al Gore and his cohorts as a favor to his wife Tipper and her openly bigoted fundamentalist friends calling themselves the Parent's Music Resource Center (PMRC). Among the PMRC's demands were the censorship through a labeling system of warning stickers, the "Reassessment of contracts" of artists whose lyrics are, "sexually explicit", "anti-Christian" or mention suicide or homosexuality. "Expert witnesses" called by the Washington Wives blame rock music for gang violence, suicide, murder, devil worship and sexual perversion. Frank Zappa stands virtually alone in opposing the PMRC and sensing their significance. The music industry above and below ground keeps their head in the sand, preferring to sleep through the hearings.

April 15, 1986

Two weeks after Dead Kennedys are publicly targeted by Susan Baker of the PMRC, Biafra's house in San Francisco is raided and torn apart by a squad of Los Angeles and San Francisco police officers. Cops even ransack the cat-box hoping to find - well? ask them. "Frankenchrist" albums and Giger posters are taken from the house and the Alternative Tentacles/Mordam offices.

June, 1986

Biafra and four others are charged in Los Angeles with one count each of "Distribution of Harmful Matter to Minors". They are the first people in American history to face criminal charges over a record; three years before the attack on 2 Live Crew. Biafra and other supporters form No More Censorship Defense Fund to cover the money to fight the charges. Defendants face a possible one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. The law had never been used before. The L.A. City Attorney's office admits to L.A. Weekly reporter Don Bolles that they kept files on several other PMRC-targeted musicians, but chose Biafra because it was, "a cost effective way of sending a message". The prosecuting attorney later says one of his goals was to destroy Alternative Tentacles. Fund-raising and the ensuing media circus delay the completion of the follow-up album to Frankenchrist, the appropriately titled Bedtime for Democracy .

August, 1987

Charges against Biafra and the other defendants are dismissed after a three-week criminal trial in Los Angeles. Even though Frankenchrist was not found to be obscene; Biafra, Dead Kennedys and Alternative Tentacles records are subsequently banned from a multitude of chain stores nationwide. This is exactly the type of de-facto censorship Tipper Gore and the PMRC had in mind. By this time, controversy has vaulted Biafra's spoken word performances from coffeehouses to the college lecture circuit, where he is brought in to "lecture" on censorship. For the first time the media is more interested in Biafra's political views than music-industry shoptalk on his latest music album. His documentation of Tipper Gore and the PMRC's ties to fundamentalist Christian extremists is no longer dismissed as lunatic. He also appears as an FBI agent in the Tim Robbins-John Cusack film, Tape Heads, wearing the same blue pin-stripe suit he wore at the trial.

This is interesting stuff. I lived in the Valley while I was attending grad school and I lived on the same block as the CEO of ZapMe. We found that we were both heavy into technology and we used to go to dinner together quite frequently. In fact if you are ever in the Valley you should stop in at La Guizina
that was our favorite place to eat. (The flambou is excellent)
I always felt like royalty back then because it was nothing for a lot of uber-powerful people to stop by our table and say hello. I met people like Larry Ellison, Steve Case, Scott McNealy and Linus himself. Linus was really cool, we had a lengthy discussion about the use of function pointers to let C simulate C++ functionality. Anyways, I know it's considered passé to drop names but all these guys were really cool. I would wait to hear more info before beliving that the guys at Zapme did anything wrong.

Good question. I've seen Myst and own Riven (which I love). I don't remember hearing anything controversial about them. They wouldn't be controversial for the standard video game reasons (ie. violence, sex, etc). Possibly for their story lines which speak of parallel worlds and a race's ability to create (or link to, depending on the viewpoint) worlds just by writing about them. That might be controversial in the same way that a group of odd people believe that the Star Wars' concept of the force is a tool of satan. Ok... yes... these guys are fake... but, it could happen.

I haven't had a lot of time to study the UDDI spec, but I have been pondering the topic of Open Services for quite some time and my feeling is they will. I like the term Open Services, as Tim O'Reilly calls them, over Web services because this concept is applicable beyond HTML and just the Web.

I think the biggest hurdle at the moment for this concept, is the perception that Microsoft invented this concept (therefore there must be something sinister and evil behind it!) and its tied to just their technology which is just plain off.

The idea of open services where around before SOAP. I haven't done an in-depth genealogy of the concept, but I can tell you Dave Winer at Userland has been evangelizing it for a couple of year now. There is also Allaire's WDDX and in a looser sense RSS and ICE.

Microsoft did initiate the SOAP spec, but have put they have opened it up and submitted to the W3C. They incorporated IBM's feedback which garnered IBM whole-hearted support. IBM released their Java implementation on AlphaWorks and then donated the code to Apache. Even Sun conceded it was a good idea and gave as much of an endorsement as they could stomach for something Microsoft had initiated.

I would even argue that IBM is excelling beyond Microsoft. Well... at least in the developer community. They've yet to release anything commercially or articulated a product strategy that utilizes it. (Typical them.) Microsoft does seem to be betting quite a bit on SOAP/Open Services and going from there.

What I love about this concept (and why I think it will succeed) is that its fairly easy and straight forward to work with. It also is a more concrete way to get all of these different platforms that are deployed to talk to each other. It will just makes developing easier, better and smarter.

The way I read it, UDDI is just a progression in making solutions built on this concept more robust.

I have been invloved in studies done at Yale University which show that people who spend more than 20 hours a week online comit less crimes and are more likely to be honest decent human beings. We spent three years collecting data and the results totally contradict all the stuff the media says about the net breeding hate and violence. The thing that surprised me the most is that the IQ's of people who spend time on the net is no higher than those that don't. We are not smarter, just different.

Yale is going to rock the world when we release the full study results next year.

You say that will lead to corporate-approved pablum, to the domination of vapid boy groups and perky teen girl solo acts churning out mindless cookie-cutter dreck? That's odd...my musical interests are fairly obscure: I like early music. Ask the average guy on the street what his favorite Machaut virelai is and you'll probably get a blank look. For a long time I had to keep an eye out at the record stores and snatch up what few discs I happened across because they weren't all that common. Funny, but nowadays there's a quarterly magazine in the bookstores down the street about nothing but early music ( Early Music America ; check it out--anybody whose phone number is 1-888-SACKBUT has won my affection :-), and a bunch of others only a little harder to get to. Those same bookstores feature enough early music CDs that I can easily spend way too much money on them. Look for early music resources on the web and you'll find enough to keep you busy for a LONG time (it's not all stuffy either; check out Bang Lassies). How can this be? I thought that commercial art was doomed to pander to the lowest common denominator, and that we need a panel of judges unsullied by the market to hand out government-seized money to their friends--er, to fund high art.

I think it's great that, for example, musicians are starting to get out from under the thumbs of the record companies--I support PatroNet and November Project--but I don't think that government coercion is necessary to encourage what I think is great art.

I place $1000 in escrow with some widely-trusted escrow agent. I create a certificate and instruct the escrow agent to pay the $1000 to the bearer of the certificate as soon as it can be verified that an amateur rocket launch has reached a height of 200 kilometers. Next I sell the certificate on EBay. To make things interesting, let's assume that hundreds or thousands of certficates have been issued by people who want to see cheap spaceflight become real.

The price of the certificates will fluctuate, just as stock prices do, based on the prevailing estimation of when and if the launch will actually occur. As with the stock market, there will be some people who buy and sell bonds purely on the basis of price momentum, but over the long term, the biggest winners will be those people who actually keep track of progress toward cheap spaceflight. Those people will have an incentive to help advance the state of the art.

The difference between this and a prize is that a prize has only one winner. With a prize, runners-up come home empty-handed. Knowing this, people who aren't sure they'll win may simply drop out of the race. Escrow certificates make it possible to reward everybody who contributes to the achievement of the goal.

Ronnie Horesh is an economist in New Zealand. He invented social policy bonds with the idea that they would be issued by the government, as a means to allow the government to specify and fund social agendas, while leaving the details of implementation to the free market. The government can certainly afford to post much larger bonds than I can as an individual, but one nice thing about this idea is that it can be completely privatized, assuming any trusted escrow agent is willing to issue and honor certificates.

It is amazing how propaganda can take hold like this :)) An amazing meme, for sure. I'm sure the argument about 'airborn intoxicants' could easily be shot down by some credible controlled tests.

For your information it is not a 128 bit processor but a 32 bit MIPS based processor with a pair of vector units sitting on a 128 bit memory bus.

Actually, you're wrong, too. It's still not a 128 bit processor, but it's a package a 64 bit MIPS III-series chip and two vector units. It accepts 128 bit words, and breaks them down for handling by one or the other of the 64-bit vector units. See this page on ars techinca for more information on the CPU core.
