Don't know if this entirely qualifies as a 'hack' but progressing along the lines of nominating aircraft designs as "great hacks," we ought not overlook the CF105 Avro Arrow built in Canada in the 1950s. Since the program was ultimately scrapped by the Canadian government at the time (citing budget concerns) before the aircraft ever went into full-scale production, it obviously didn't become as famous as it otherwise would certainly have done, but the fact remains that it was a fantastic achievement.

The best website concerning the Arrow is probably the Discovery Channel's Flight Deck which has a good piece on the technical aspects of the Arrow, and exn.ca has some decent stuff as well. There are several other sites which contain pix, specs & plans, noteworthy info and comparisons or narratives (mirrored), and like all obscure subjects online, it also has a Web Ring.

The Arrow was the first aircraft to pull a 2-G turn at 50,000' without loss of speed or altitude - unusual even today. It was also an extraordinary achievement in the amount and variety of weaponry that it carried in its weapons pack, which could include not only weaponry, but also reconansance equipment, fuel, and just about anything else, most of which could be reloaded or swapped in a matter of minutes - still impressive by today's standards. Consider that an Arrow in 1959 could have flown higher at a similar speed (slightly faster, actually) than an F-14D Tomcat did 31 years later... the Arrow is a 40-year-old accomplishment that would compare remarkably well with the aircraft of today - and comparisons with aircraft of its day are in most instances almost unfair, unless you look only at a single feature.

The CIA's U2 spy-plane had a higher flight ceiling than the Arrow - 60,000' compared with 58,000 - and its only defence was altitude. In 1959, one of the very few things aloft that could have brought one down from its flight ceiling was an Arrow, which could bring down a target at a 70,000' altitude. The U2 was replaced by the SR-71 Blackbird (nominated elsewhere), which the Arrow predates just slightly (the Blackbird first hit the drawing board at Lougheed's SkunkWorks in September 1959, whereas the Arrow project was scrapped in February 1959; note the SR-71 has a strikingly similar cockpit configuration). For further comparison, the F14's flight ceiling is about 53,000', (the SR-71's is around 85,000' achieved in 1976).
The F-117A Stealth Fighter has internal weapons carriage and fly-by-wire controls: the current wave of the future. The Arrow had both in 1957.
The F/A-18 engines (20 years later) each produce 11,000/16,000 pounds thrust without/with afterburner; the Arrow's Iriquois engine produced 19,500/25,600 with a potential for 30,000 -- more similar to a MiG-31 or an F-14.
Delta-wing aircraft were revolutionary at the time - the Arrow was a tail-less delta-wing design with a "blended" cockpit (think Stealth Bomber) rather than the (at that time) conventional "bubble" cockpit with a conventional wing design.
Although the Arrow was intended for use as a fighter-interceptor, its armament bay was larger than a B29 Bomber's.

The Arrow contained serveral other aviation 'firsts' and 'near-firsts' and several 'bests' and 'near-bests' - but the truly amazing thing was the way that Avro brought it all together in a single package. The designers' plans for an 'Ultimate Arrow' suggest they were thinking bigger still, despite having made history already - there is really no telling what might have evolved from the project today if had been left intact. After the project was scrapped, many of the design team from Avro went on to work on other projects, so that certain Arrow features apparently began to appear in a variety of places, including (perhaps) the Concorde, the Stealth Bomber, and at NASA, where 32 Avro engineers ended up working on Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo - including Apollo 11 (nominated elsewhere) and I believe 13 (also nominated elsewhere) and the space shuttle.

Alas, until I read Paul Hoffman's The Man Who Loved Only Numbers , a great biography of prolific math-geek Paul Erdos, all I really knew about Fermat's Last Theorem came from a painfully bad Star Trek episode. In the Trek universe, the proof still eludes everyone in the 24th century, even Data and a room full of math geeks. While not really a math guy, Picard likes trying to solve it as a hobby and the innumerate Riker hasn't even heard of it, owing the the constant warp core breach in his pants). The book devotes a couple of pages to Andrew Wiles' presentation of his proof, in which he threw "the entire kitchen sink" of twentieth century mathematics and how it's unlikely that Wiles' proof is similar to Fermat's (assuming it existed). Perhaps Fermat thought he had a proof when he really didn't, or maybe it was his way of pulling a fast one on future generations.

I have been told by an applied math geek friend of mine that STW is another one of those "it's all connected, maaaan..."-type theories along the line of "e^(pi * i) + 1 = 0", although a good deal messier. I've also been informed that STW was used heavily in Wiles' proof, not unlike a load-bearing block in Jenga.

KDE 1.1.1 beats the Windows interface, but it sure is a long way from the WPS.

The WPS feels like no other UI. It is amazingly productive. Objects are assigned properties based on rules that can be applied in different ways. 'Drag and drop' is used, for example, in assigning colors, fonts and so forth to text.

And yet nothing seems to happen! What can we do!

What this really amounts to is the Scientology crowd is trying to use the legal system to shut out controvertial talk against it. You can bet that if there were a site singing the praises of dianetics, etc, using the exact same words, that there would never be a suit.

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. I went to EPCOT for one afternoon/evening with my family a couple of weeks ago. I had gone there about ten years ago and as a child was impressed by the "futuristic" things (they still were, kinda). One of the things that I really wanted to see was the Innoventions area, which had alot of really cools things in it to do. It now consists of the following:

IBM's "Future of the Internet": Two buttons, it plays you pre-made video of the "site" you choose - one or the other (gives you two random selections). A chilling thought that that is where IBM wants the Internet to go in that direction. The only "breakthrough" was that the display was a bowl, and you had a piece of glass in front of you that filtered out all of the projected images to show you only your own. After my son and I left it, I asked him what he thought and he said that it ignored what button he pressed. I had the same problem.

Monsanto's "Our Planet?" Something about nature, with many plants, and a tunnel that you crawl through to look at termites, ants, and things with a magnifying glass. Monsanto is, of course, the manufacturer of Bovine Growth Hormone, and seeds that are genetically engineered to not reproduce.

Sega's Dreamcast area, where you can play on one of the 50 Dreamcasts with flat screen monitors. Lots of fun.

There was more. We left. I and my son were fairly disenchanted by the experience.

The CSS code was pulled from the CVS the day the news broke; the LiVid code posted is the package Bruce Perens downloaded and posted a short time later. The only change made to either one is the .ZIP format change from the original tarball.

Might I suggest this translation resource? Site O' Joel is a good place to translate to/from just about any language (no Somoli or Malay just yet), but it is geared toward English speakers. Oh, and its just a links page to lots of online resources, etc., but its a good starting place. Don't forget to check out the world's first ever English to Canadian translator while you're there.

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

'Knowledge' is a difficult word. Perhaps it would be better to say that living in the fucking eastern block for 20 years has left you with strong opinions on the subject. Clearly your opinion is not invariably shared by others, who have experienced both systems first hand. For instance, these experiences have left Valdas Anelauskas with similarly strong opinions, albeit radically different ones.

You can get it here here. Watch out, it's a geocities page (I have Java and Javascript turned of, so I don't get hassled). He hasn't released the source yet, but appearently he intends to once he's cleaned it up a little, though I think he should just release it as is and get others to help.

Yeah, well I uploaded it to my website using IE 5.0 under Win98 to connect to the internet using MSN (look in upper right corner) to point to the MSNBC front page that say Microsoft may be a monopoly.

Oh yeah, I started up microsoft agent and had merlin and polly snore through Bill G. netshow stream statement.

I'm just trying to be just a _BIT_ sarcastic here, so lay off the gif business because Microsoft Image Composer won't convert to it, nor will paintbrush, and IE won't display it without using scroll bars!!!!!
