APK has nothing to do with it, there are several ways to manage a hosts file without requiring you to use a spammer's software to block ads. A quick search shows a program called HostsMan, for example. There's a small list of hosts managers here (including the one I mentioned, but that list doesn't include the software written by a notorious spammer), and another list here (also with a notable exclusion).

Even if you want a program to help you manage your hosts file, you still don't need to stoop to the level of a spammer, there are spam-free hosts file alternatives also (which should not be a surprise).

I performed this procedure on an old Win7 netbook, and it worked out fine. Good way to take an objective look at Win10 without endangering your Win7 installation with a possibly irreversible update process.

Firefox also has some telemetry but you can disable it in about:config or, better yet, by using a user.js file. One pretty good summary of privacy and security settings is here. I notice, however, that many of these telemetry settings are turned off by default in the mobile version of Firefox, at least the beta version. That's ironic in a way, because the standard excuse companies use when people find unexpected telemetry or back doors is to say "Oops, that was just supposed to be in test versions of the software. We forgot to turn it off in the final version."

For those who want to keep Win7/8 but want to make sure they won't have to pay for WinX after the end of July, just grab a fresh HD/SSD and perform a WinX clean install instead of an upgrade of your existing system. Remove the HD/SSD and replug your old Win7/8 drive and keep the WinX install until January 14, 2020.

Locate the ForcedReboot DWORD in that key (or create it if it does not exist) and set it to 0.

Should be the first thing any serious gamer does when setting up a new Windows system. Although, you will need to reboot the system manually to apply updates once that DWORD is set to zero. It's a small price to pay to avoid the issues seen in the article.

About half of my family is running Linux instead of Windows. We're geekier than the average, but I can tell you that non-geeks in my family have no problem at all running a Linux desktop. (And I've installed Windows and Linux, and overall it's easier to do a Linux install.)

It has never been easier to junk Windows and switch to Linux. Many people just use email, a web browser, and Facebook; those all Just Work on Linux. Video, sound, it's all fine.

And desktop is getting less important all the time; people are using mobile devices more and more. And Microsoft missed the boat on mobile.

So even as the "network" that makes Windows important is crumbling ("network" as in "network effect"), even as Microsoft's actual power to push people is waning, they keep finding new ways to punish people who stick with them. Hey, nobody will mind if we monitor them a bunch, right? Make it almost impossible to figure out whether it's enabled or not. (If it's even possible to disable it... maybe it isn't!) And start pushing ads, because nobody hates having full-screen ads in their faces.

Is Microsoft actually trying to achieve Windows 8 levels of hatred for Windows 10? Does Linus Torvalds have sleeper agents inside Microsoft trying to make Windows crumble from inside?

Keep this up, MIcrosoft, and we may yet see the Year of Linux on the Desktop.

P.S. I haven't bothered to keep up with all the settings one must change to disable all the bad behaviors in Windows 10. I just checked to see if there's a tool for it... there's a bunch and it's not obvious which one(s) to use. Is there a clear favorite tool to fix the Windows 10 settings?
