Re:Not 2GB... it's 1424 MBYou need to log out, then head to http://www.gmail.com. There's a Javascript-powered counter on the front page.
Incidentally, I just learned how to do a little DHTML using that page as a template -- throw the stuff in a<span id=whatever>
, then assign to document.getElementById("whatever").innerHTML.
Google just keeps on giving. :-) -
Re:April 1st?
This is not an april fool's prank. It is real. The joke is the "infinity + 1" storage that appears on the gmail main page. But if you follow the link they have, which reads:
"Gmail turns 1 today. And we've always loved a good joke. We know we won't reach infinity, but check out what we will do ..."
You will see that they are very serious about increasing to 2 GB of storage. The counter on the Gmail page seems to be increasing from 1000 Mb to 2000 Mb at a rate that will reach the goal by the time the day is over. -
Re:Schweet
Take a look at the main gmail page. You can see the counter slowly increasing your space allotment throughout the day.
-
Oh yeah? Infinity plus 1!
Check out the napkin drawing on the login screen.

Re:Give me a break
Indeed. If you are British or vaugely interested in the British royalty then the Daily Mail did a good one. But it's not techy.
There are the obligatory think geek ones which are mildly amusing.
Even gmail is having a little joke. It's only funny due to the reaction of the launch last year.
Googles got a proper April fools, but it's not very good... -

Is april fool's really gmail's cake day? and are we really getting 1263 mbs of storage? -
Re:Google Gmail April Fools: Infinity and Beyond S
The bastards. I filled up my account about a month ago and moved many of my messages to the trash (all 32000 I didn't want to read, many from the LKML). I also unsubscribed. Now they've increased the space and it is no longer in the red! I now have to fill it up again!
:(

But seriously, is it useful?
April fools aside, I'm not sure how this would be useful.
They seem to only show available cabs, but which cab you get is up to the dispatcher, making the information available to you potentially useless.
In other news.. GMail now offers 2gig storage at least + more space daily as you reach the limit as well as rich text editing. Plus the amusing page up now. -
PSP
This reminds me of a little Slashdot article about CSS, plus the ongoing Slashdot forum about redoing Slashdot in XHTML and CSS. Now that PSP has browser functionality, I think it's imperative for web developers to examine their sites for usability. I would be interested to see how DHTML is handled on the PSP, for example, by testing the Milonic package. I seriously doubt it would work very well on PSP, but you never know.
This raises the issue of UserAgent sniffing. Right now I'm developing an Open Source CMS called Gemsites (link in sig), and I'm considering supporting cut-down templates for PocketPC, Palm and (now) PSP. I've got the code set up to sniff the UserAgent and make a decision on it, thanks to php.net's user-assist messages in the function database. But now I'm wondering if my whole CMS will stand up to the more compact screens used by PSP et al. I guess what I'm saying is that if you're a developer and you know CSS/XHTML and/or PHP, I would like to talk to you about usability. -
Re:No more sticks?
You can even mount your gmail "drive", then drag-n-drop files into it. when you go on http://www.gmail.com/, you can see them in the trash with a special title, so they don't mess your mailbox up.

Coders needed for open source projectI was wondering whether to post this to
/. or not. What the hell -- we're a free, not-for-profit, open-source media project. It doesn't get more Slashdotty than that.
We're looking for coders to help out on Ourmedia -- to make it a Slashdotter's multimedia wet dream.
The Ourmedia Project is relying on open-source developers to build new functionalities for the site -- such as media ratings, new RSS features, playlists, social networking, license searches, improved taxonomies -- and to help build a global registry connecting a network of grassroots media sites.
That means six months from now we don't want to be just a destination website -- we want open-source schemas that will let any site hook into a global network of freely accessible grassroots media.
But we can't pull that off unless more expert coders pitch in. (Here's our current project team and advisory board.) (Apologies, we're adding more servers tonight.)
See our Volunteer page for details. Pass it along. Or ignore this, as you wish.

our Page Ranking pverlords?
In that case, Google must have already pwned us.
They are taking over the world. They plan on taking over the world by not taking over the world. "Hey, Google is nice....they aren't taking over the world" Then before you know it you page ranking what to eat, who your friends are, what car to buy, where to live, where to work.
Yeah, they're much like one of those nice girls in high school. They're friendly, and mean to do good, but you end up obsessing over them 'cause they're so blatantly hot. They take over your mind with their curves intelligence and self-confidence...and of course that keeps a man from ever getting some real (for lack of a better term) knowledge.
Google is the hot, slimmed-down, super-smart chick of the Internet; if it was a girl, it'd be that rare case of someone who wouldn't spoon-feed you with gossip unless you want her to, would be there for you the moment you need her, would help you with research, and would even get the mail for you. She'd even let you see others. Sounds like a supermodel to me.

Re:Can the fans be in control?
Poll update time! Updated numbers as of 10:41 PST this fine Monday morning... the stats have swung around quite broadly now... with 1209 respondents, is goes as follows:
$2.00 - 311
$1.75 - 40
$1.50 - 142
$1.25 - 227
$1.15 - 160
$0.99 - 173
less than $0.99 - 156
So now the question I have (and you can ponder on your own) is this: if iTunes sells a compressed audio file for $0.99, but 329 of you think an episode of a series should sell for that much (or less)... which is the issue: are you under-valuing the episode, or is $0.99 too much to pay for a song? Any other insights, drop me a line. I'll be updating the site with some more content tonight (to respond to some interesting emails I've received). -

Re:Competitiveness
It's a lot easier to spread into new markets when you can siphon profits from a monopoly you hold in another market.
Oh you mean like- Blogger
- Google Maps
- Google Desktop Search
- Google SMS Search
- Picasa
- Keyhole
- Google Video Search
- Froogle Price Search
- GMail
All ancillary products paid for by the main product.
Have a reality check; all companies do this. You have a good product and you put that money back into R&D for new products. Take a look at the cash flow sheet of any publicly traded company, and stop being a basher. Try to put logic into an argument.

Er.. WHO CARESMan, talk about searching left and right for a problem...
The whole point of XHTML compliant documents is so that the data can be parsed by a non-HTML user agent without issue, as regular XML. This lets you do nice things like XSLT transforms on the HTML, XPath data queries, etc. It is not to make things nicer in the browser, it is not to make things faster, and in fact, both Mozilla and IE can render XHTML compliant pages SLOWER under certain circumstances, because of the validation procedures involved in the parsing.
Using JavaScript to fancy up a page has absolutely no effect on this. Unless the website is actually placing useable data on the page via JavaScript (**ahem**), then the JavaScript has ZERO impact on either the compliance level or the utility of XHTML. And from what I can see, this is exactly what MSN Search (and what most websites) are dong - using JavaScript to write fancy navigation and whatnot, none of which is really useful to a non-HTML user agent.

but their participation in the advancement of web based email services or other apps is part and parcel of the general move forward.
hahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah, geeeez did you really say that?
if you want an invite, there are loads around free POP, and lots of space.
Microsoft playing catch up on search and email and IM == part of the way forward? well I hope so.
It's just another step towards the increasing legitimacy and acceptance of online services either replacing or merging with traditional desktop applications.

Re:I'm just tagging my Flickr photos now.
And this is also why search-based systems like GMail and Zoe that let you group and classify things on the fly are so useful. And it's not limited to computer stuff, either. Haven't you ever tried to figure out which of your (manila) file folders you should use to file a receipt?

Re:Google is more than a search engine...
I liked Froogle the first time around, when it was called Yahoo! Shopping. (There are lots of other sites that do the same thing, too.)
Google Image Search is nothing unique, and it often fails on anything more complex than a person's name.
If Google can't come up with anything better than Yet Another Web Mail Service and Yet Another Social Networking Site, they'll teeter dangerously over the cliff of irrelevancy in 2005. It's hard to get revved up over yet more mergers and acquisitions, an amazingly-inflated stock price, and ugly downgrades with a "BETA" logo slapped on top. -

Re:Multiple RedundancyAny kind of backup solution is preferable to a single point of failure.
This is a very good point, but I don't think the parent post takes it far enough.
If your livelihood depends on your data, back it up in multiple locations. A USB key is convenient for moving your data around, but it's not designed for backup. First, backup your working directory daily to one or two backup directories on the same drive; this is convenient if you accidently munge your working directory.
Second, backup your working directory to CD-ROM every day or two. Ideally alternate two CD-ROMs for redundancy. Even better, have two sets of two CD-ROMs, keep the second set off-site and rotate them once a week.
Third, if you have a second computer in your household, that could be convenient for network backups.
Fourth, someone mentioned iBackup (and there are others), but you could also email backups to yourself at gMail or <insert favorite webmail service here>. And although many people dump on Yahoo!, My Yahoo! offers a free 30MB storage area.
