Re:Why does the FBI continue to engage in witchcra
Actually, I read the linked PDF, which plainly states that there's no evidence of any sensor that can reliably detect clenching of the anus. They advise against it because of the possibility that such a tactic might be detectable, but they suggest it doesn't. Sure, there are plenty of tell-tale signs in many people that they're uncomfortable with a question because of guilt, but they're far from perfect. There are many reasons that a person might exhibit a strong physiological reaction to certain questions that don't involve guilt. With the technology in polygraph tests, those reactions are indistinguishable from the discomfort that comes from guilt or lying. It's also likely that a polygraph wouldn't be very effective on a psychopath. I think brain imaging might be able to detect lying or distorting the truth much more effectively because of the mental processing required to construct a story versus what's needed to recall a memory. However, even that could probably be defeated if a person understood how the system works. Also, the polygraph in many cases is essentially a prop for interrogation because the person being interrogated doesn't have access to the data and can be manipulated by the supposed results. My captcha is quite appropriate for this: "truths."
