Calling this technique "culturomics" makes it sound like it is some new field, and that analysis of this type has never been undertaken before. It is actually called bibliometrics, and it has been around for decades. Digital resources such as Google books allow now much larger amounts of data to be analyzed than was possible in the past, but this isn't some new field just invented by these researchers.

By "smartphone," don't you really just mean the iPhone? Game devs certainly aren't making a run for the booming Android goldmine. Also, the only genre that touchscreen controls aren't so hot in is traditional action games (platformers, shooters, fighters) where you have to move your character around with fast reaction times. You have about (at least) six crew members riding in a giant tin can and if you're using a (FAILED) Orion space capsule, you won't have enough leg room, let alone privacy. Also you can't be weightless for the entire journey or your bones will become brittle. You need a ARTIFICIAL GRAVITY ROTATION DRIVE, similar to the ships from the 2010 and MISSION TO MARS movies. You can't go into deep space in a small (been there, done that) space capsule or otherwise you'll go cuckoo for coco puffs. If you're going to build a ship, think big and do it right. My nine year old nephew informed me last week that he definitely wanted a 3DS rather than an iPod Touch because it's 3D! That's better than the iPod Touch which isn't 3D at all. But I think in a few years he'll see the benefit of the iPod. Being able to buy a game a week with his allowance rather than saving up for a $30 or $40 game is a big advantage. Nintendo needs to wake up to the fact that game prices are going down. A game like the Legend of Zelda will probably still sell for $50, but they need to be competing more strongly in the under $10 market. That means getting their Internet connectivity sorted out and expanding the selection of downloadable titles.

Let me get this straight we are going to send astronauts to Mars to an asteroid in a small Orion capsule for months at a time. That is the impression I'm beginning to get a reading all these articles. I personally don't see the value of going to an asteroid when we have unmanned missions going there now. We should go directly to Mars in a ship large enough to carry the crew comfortably as soon as possible not in a small Apollo type Orion spacecraft. NASA wants to save money to go both these places and what they should do is develop a large reusable crew comfortable ship that can be used for both missions without having to be rebuilt for each mission. In my case Linux would be a great alternative for home/small business if only it ran a few niche programs that I simply cannot live without, for the most part professional music apps such as Finale and Sibelius. When you're actually trying to get work done it really isn't to the point to spend half of your time trying to get apps like that to run, another half looking for native alternatives (usually open-source and not ready for pro work) and the third half petitioning software publishers to support your favorite OS.

If Gene Ruth thinks there is no problem with DVD media he should try looking at some instead of quoting the brochures. I have a large DVD collection (about 3000) and I can tell you that a large number of them have already developed "laser rot" and won't play any more. How long they last varies from one maker to the next. Some of them are originals from the dawn of the media but others have failed and turned "brassy" in less than 5 years and no longer play. Surprise! I see a lot of failure from recent ones made in China. I've also had Verbatim DVD-R media that failed in less than 3 years.

Seems to me this entire argument goes *poof* if one replaces "culture" with "academic culture". Is there value in statistical analysis of that culture using rigorous mathematical techniques? Obviously yes. What I see is another article that uses distain to disguise the fear that arrises as it becomes clear the digitization of the world turns all fields of study into informatics. Well, there is nothing to complain about, as long as you keep Windows Update turned on, have both software and physical defenses in place such as a hardware based Firewall in place, you should not have anything to worry about.
