Which yours obviously are not. In 2015 they were deciding on the future of Mayer, 3 years after being CEO. Yahoo's stock did not perform well and the financials were poor. The company was treading water. Basically people were waiting for a buyer.
That was my impression as well... until I looked at the numbers. The numbers don't lie, and the most important one is market capitalization, what the market thinks a company is actually worth, net of assets, liabilities and future prospects. Market cap is also good because it's unaffected by stock splits or even by divestments or acquisitions (except to the degree that those are good/bad moves which actually change the market's evaluation of the company's value).
When Mayer took over on July 17, 2012, Yahoo!'s market cap was $18.63B. Three years later it was $36.19B, a 94% increase. Today it's $44.54B, another 23% increase. YHOO's compound annual growth rate since Mayer has been the CEO is 20.58%. If she could manage my investment portfolio like she managed YHOO, I'd hire her in a heartbeat.
How does that compare in context, though? I calculated CAGR for a few companies that seemed relevant:
GOOG: 28.08%
AAPL: 5.47%
MSFT: 16.19%
IBM: -4.86%
AMZN: 35.74%
ORCL: 3.91%So, Mayer's YHOO was beaten by GOOG and AMZN, but beat AAPL, MSFT, IBM and ORCL. That's really not bad. At all.
How about against the market as a whole? I calculated CAGR for some important indices over the same time period.
NASDAQ composite: 16.30%
S&P 500: 12.76%
Dow Jones Industrial Average: 11.12%Mayer beat them all, soundly. You can try to argue that that's just because of decisions that were made prior to her tenure, but she chose to stay with those bets rather than doing something else. And you can argue that YHOO had the potential to do so much better... but then you have to explain why those companies that underperformed YHOO (on average, all of them) lacked YHOO's potential.
My perception of YHOO when Mayer took over was that it was a dying company, in search of a reason to exist, desperate to find a way to exploit its remaining loyal customers to achieve some sort of success. And it's pretty clear that it didn't manage to do that... but it most definitely did find a way to increase shareholder value.
Given the numbers, Mayer did a damned good job for her shareholders and board of directors, and deserves her pay.

Only because the boneheads making the decisions keep ignoring the data that open concept work spaces don't f#@king work.
Google: open concept offices. Note, I didn't include words or phrases like "bad" or "don't work," that's just everything that shows up when you search for it. It's a provably bad idea and dysfunctional. And yes, I'm admitting this as someone who, just this week, is being forced to move into our "new" open concept area at work.

Except the people living in the rat runs. Pollution goes up, health deteriorates and costs increase. Accidents increase, insurance goes up. Property prices decrease, they can't use the street for other things any more.
There is a reason that major roads are kept separate from where people live.
Not only that, but one of the largest causes of congestion on highways is on/off ramps. If traffic on the on/off ramps increases, overall traffic might increase too. There's a particularly bad example of this on my commute at 29.9378728,-95.4454552. The eastbound highway has an exit onto the feeder road, followed shortly by the entrance ramp. The feeder road has no stoplights in between the exit and onramps. Waze often tells me to take the exit and then re-enter the highway. Traffic is often backed up here at peak times, but clears up after the entrance ramp.
It is clear that Waze is promoting a route which makes traffic worse in this case. You can watch it unfold as someone takes the offramp and then tries to merge back on, causing slowdowns. This is a very clear case, there are likely many others which may not be so obvious. -

The California drought is the worst that's happened in the state in the last 1000 years.
If anything, many of the predictions were overly conservative.
In 2001 the IPCC predicted that sea level would rise 2mm/year. It's actually rising 3.3mm/year. They predicted that the arctic ice sheet would melt in 50-70 years in 2006. It's now predicted to melt by 2052.Here are some predictions that came true:
1. The sea level is rising in most places, though at the high end (or higher) than original predictions (3.2mm/year vs 2mm).
2. The sea level fell near Greenland as predicted due to the loss of mass and the gravitational pull of that mass.
3. Extreme weather events were predicted to become more common with climate change. This is happening as "about 25% of moderate daily hot extremes can be attributed to warming.".
4. The predicted radiative forcing effect from CO2 has been observationally confirmed. -

Houses vs real estate
The $500k homes are expensive because they're on prime real estate. The $100k-$200k homes are for the large part identical to the $500k homes, they're just in less desirable locations.
There is plenty of open land in the U.S. You can always build more cheap homes in less desirable locations (unless your city has done something like silly like created no-build open space preserves in all possible surrounding areas where new housing could've been built to ease demand). That's why they don't appreciate much - there's always more supply being created to meet growing demand. But aside from the formation of a new city, you can't create new prime real estate. Its supply is fixed, while demand is increasing. So its value appreciates a lot faster. -

The U.S.has the second largest installed wind capacity - nearly all of it onshore. Offshore wind farms in the U.S. are complicated by geography. Winds in the Northern hemisphere blow predominantly from the west, so the strongest offshore winds are to the west of land masses (which slow the wind down). Europe is blessed with an extensive continental shelf to its west. So it's relatively easy to build an offshore wind farm there several tens or even a hundred kilometers from shore, before the winds are slowed down by land.
About half the U.S. West coast (California) has practically no continental shelf. You go a kilometer offshore and the water is already deeper than the European continental shelf. Go a few more kilometers offshore and the water is 1-3 km deep. Northern California to Washington does have a slight continental shelf, but (1) practically nobody lives along the coast north of San Francisco, and (2) the bulk of U.S. hydroelectric power is there giving the region the cheapest electricity in the country. So in the geographic region of the U.S.which is most analogous to Europe in terms of strongest winds, offshore wind farms are unfeasible due to underwater topography, (lack of) population, or economics.
The U.S. East coast has a large continental shelf, but due to the direction of the prevailing winds, you have to go far offshore to find winds stronger than what you'd find onshore. The focus of most offshore wind in the U.S. has been just south of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, where the shoreline turns almost directly east-west, allowing wind speeds to pick up relatively close to shore. It's still nowhere near as good as the offshore winds west of Europe though. The wind farms off Scotland enjoy some of the highest capacity factors on earth - higher than 60%. Typical offshore wind capacity factor in the U.S. is closer to 30%-35%.

Bench your SSD, I bet it sucks as much dick as you. I was referring to a Mac Pro, and they are still plenty fast doing awesome work. They have yet to be updated with the newest Xeons, but you only refresh your workstations every so often, and Apple will refresh it in time for a bunch of current owners who appreciate the machine to refresh it. The best engineers and designers in the world use Apple machines for specifically that reason. NASA engineers landing Curiosity.
