Re:sharksOnly one problem with that: An unusual exception is the shark. Sharks don't get cancer, even though they're relatively complex creatures. Homeopaths have been experimenting with shark cartilage for years trying to work out why this is.
But sharks do get cancer
And if, supposing dharks didn't get cancer, what would cartilage have to do with it?
And, since you're talking about homeopaths, why would pills that don't contain any cartilage, but are supposed to somehow remember that there was once some cartilage in the mixing vat help? -

I'm continually amazed at the number of people freaking out about the AdSense content next to their emails (high) vs. the number of people freaking out about the vast Kevin-Bacon-Style network of who-knows-who the invite system produces (low).
This is why the gmail spool is good, and possibly why it's actually surprisingly hard to locate using Google.. -

Changing perceptions of Yahoo! and Google
I don't think Yahoo! has ever been a dot.has.been. Yahoo! is such a large company that they are perceived as a somewhat faceless corporate behemoth (at least among techies). Google, on the other hand is perceived as a more nimble, dynamic and adaptable company. Google is, of course, much smaller than Yahoo!, but still quite a large company (1900+ employees).
For techie folks who follow the Yahoo! bloggers, that "faceless" perception of Yahoo! is changing I think. Ironically, Google is beginning to appear a bit like a faceless corporation in the way they present themselves on the Web. Anyone who reads Google's official blog can't fail to notice how phoney and vapid it sometimes seems. As if each entry that's been posted has been run through a "press-release" language filter (I wonder if every entry is vetted before being posted). The other aspect is their secrecy - this is understandable to an extent. For me, the problem lies with their purchase of Blogger - I wish they would give some hint of what they plan to do with the service. Nothing has been announced or information given on the direction of the service - meanwhile, other companies like Six Apart are forging ahead with new features and growing mindshare. Now, Yahoo! is jumping into the fray with their imminent launch of Yahoo! 360.
I really dislike the new re-design of Google groups. I'm sure they must have done some user-testing on this, but it just seems like a leap backwards in many respects from their previous design.
Finally, I'm sure that Google remains the default search for many people, but I have noticed that other search engines like Alltheweb and Yahoo! Search often give comparable results. I don't think one can say (with as much certainty as in the past) that Google always provides the best search results. As an example, compare a search for the terms Open Source Usability on Google, Yahoo! and AlltheWeb. Not much to choose between them.

Re:Channel 5 History
Just to add to the background info, Channel 5 is owned by Radio Luxembourg (RTL) who have been broadcasting to the UK since 1933; they were the first company to provide English-language commercial radio listenable in the UK, the famous "Radio Luxembourg 208" which ran on mediumwave from 1933 until 1992, including a stint in WWII when the station was taken over against their will by Nazis. RTL also own several German, Dutch and French TV and radio stations.

Re:How, Exactly?
Actually, raytraced shadows look like crap, at least in the classical sense. Classical raytracing is done by tracing rays back from the pixels to light sources.
[...]
Radiosity is a popular method.
Another method used more recently is called photon mapping, in which the illumination of the scene is calculated by ray-tracing from the light source to the various surfaces, via reflection / refraction etc.
It's kinda like the next step on from radiosity calculation (in both efficacy and how much of a ball-ache it is on the processor!) but the single greatest effect is that you can calculate accurate caustics (ever see the strange light patterns cast by a glass of water on the desk? or the wavy patterns on the bottom of a pool?)
The results can be truly stunning. Incidentally, the round silvery that turns up as the 16th hit from where I'm searching from is exactly the same as the one I bought from ikea several years ago...
Cheers & God bless

Free as in Freedom
As with software, there's ambiguity in the meaning of the English word "free". Most of the discussion here is focussing on "free as in beer". Price is important to many, natually enough, not least because of the intrusion required online to make sure you've paid.
But I suspect a lot of /.ers are more concerned with "free as in speech". This is often, but not always, connected to the pricing. "Free" newspapers are owned by businesses whose reason for publishing is to make money: if you're not paying upfront for the paper, then all their revenue is coming from ads, and they thererefore have even more need to keep their editorial policy in line with their advertisers. It's already been pointed out above that supposedly "independent" news media like the BBC aren't all that independent: running a news site really well costs money, and the BBC is still reliant on an increasingly pushy and spin-loving UK government to pay its bills.
Having a no-charge business model also puts pressure on costs, and makes getting cheap or "free" (i.e. no-cost) content all the more attractive. The independence of the reporting can suffer as a result. The NYT has coincidentally just run a story about how the White House is pushing pro-government "news" stories to the networks, paid for by the taxpayer, which don't always clue the viewer who produced them. This isn't necessarily a conspiracy, it's just "good business". The same conflict of interest exists in a corporate-owned newspaper, online or hardcopy.
I think many people attribute a sense of mission to their news provider. Some people think FOX tells it "fair and balanced", and watch it for that reason. Good for them. I personally would rather watch Bullwinkle re-runs than FOX News, but that's beside the point. Consciously or unconsciously, a lot of people believe that their favorite news provider is mostly "telling the truth" about what's going on in the world, and are unable or unwilling to see conflicts of interest, especially when they're unaware of how their favorite news provider's business model works. I simply don't believe that a GE-owned news business is always going to tell the truth about what GE gets up to.
The one large-scale attempt that I'm aware of to build a global news network which is free both of corporate and government control is Indymedia. Their quality varies anywhere from excellent first-hand reporting, to the truly awful. Freedom is like that: you have the freedom to write something which some people really want to hear, and other people really hate. The US and some European govts have been cracking down on Indymedia lately, which doesn't bode well for freedom of speech. This is true even if you don't like Indymedia's anarchist/left-wing editorial policy: people have the right to report the news as they see it. You equally have a right to redress if lies are told about you.
So the Indymedia model is far from perfect. How then can an international news network operate which is free of both corporate and government interference? If 100% free-as-in-freedom news isn't possible without a regular revenue stream, then how do you at least maximize the freedom AND the quality of the content?
PS: BugMeNot helps you skirt around that "free" registration with the NYT.

Re:Can't you turn this off on Linux?
I was trying to work out what effect or side effects this could have. From
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt, it references RFC1323, which says "The timestamps are used for two distinct mechanisms: RTTM (Round Trip Time Measurement) and PAWS (Protect Against Wrapped Sequences)."
I'm going to do some tests with it enable, and disabled, and see if I can find any difference. Google didn't turn up anything in the first few results one way or the other. -

for me, just looks like a sub 20k web dev or manager wrote the page if you look at the source it doesn't look like the 'coder' would know how to boost the page rankings.
I expect 'traffic estimator', is just an internal Google buzword for a product, that estimates traffic based on the amout of traffic to a site. try saying this using less than four traffics and tree estimates. -
Re:Could be keyword stuffing...
The URL in question is http://adwords.google.co.uk/support/bin/answer.py
? answer=9653&topic=65, which is not suppressed by the robots.txt file. The cached version simply shows that Google stuffed keywords for their own search engine, not that they intend for other search engines to index the tweaked pages.
I'd be interested to see what other search engine user agents return, like if I tried msnbot or Nutch or TurnitinBot. Has anyone found nefarious use of these tags in other search engines? Also has anyone found these for the .com site versus the .co.uk site? -
