    The Japanese put in a lot of hours, but not much of that is "working". Japan's productivity is only 60% of America's. There is a social taboo to leave work before your boss, so people stay late and surf the web. The bosses are promoted based on seniority rather than ability, and are often incompetent with no incentive to take the initiative on more enlightened working conditions. It is better to just stick to prevailing social conventions and keep a low profile.

    America: The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Japan: The nail that sticks up will be hammered back down.

    I have worked in Japanese companies for almost 8 years in total, 7 months of which was in Japan. Everything in your post is true except "so people stay late and surf the web". This is not my experience. In my experience, people stay late and do NOT surf the web. The open floor plan in most Japanese offices makes goofing off unnoticed nearly impossible.

    Some people are doing productive work, but slowly. Others were doing unproductive work (again, slowly). Others take frequent visits to other people in different departments. Meetings which require 2-3 people but 8 people are invited also help run up the man hours. Surfing the web for non-work reasons was strictly during lunch hours and breaks, I never saw it.

    It is very common to see T-shirts and mugs like these images saying And God said, {maxwell's equations in vector calculus notations}, and there was light.

    Father of computational electromagnetics Zoltan Cendes, named his flagship product Maxwell(tm). He is the one figured out how to remove the null space of the curl vector from the computational solutions. Before that naively applying finite element formulation to Maxwell's equations yielded garbage. His edge-vector finite element formulation is the gold standard in getting computational EM results.

    This brings up what Linus said recently. One would think Maxwell's equation was all "innovation". But remember, Maxwell did not work in the vector calculus! He was working in analytical geometry, Cartesian coordinate system. Laboriously wrote out the expanded forms of the gradient operator and worked through the equivalent of the cross product explicitly term by goddammed term. I see Computational EM developers struggling to keep up with the math even with the use of Matlab and Mathematica software packages handling symbolic algebra. That he did it all in analytical geometry, for the first time, without knowing all the gibberish he was writing down will eventually lead to a breakthrough....

    Is it possible other great mathematicians of his day had this idea? Probably. Some might have even pointed the direction to Maxwell himself. But, in the end, trudging through all that algebra and coordinate geometry in the long form laboriously is what made that breakthrough possible. Yes, innovation is needed as the spark.     Facts or no action required. In the case of facts, each case should be reviewed. Dishonesty is not a male only trait, and we have plenty of cases of dishonest allegations of sexual assault and harassment. Here.

    Every company I have worked at in the last 3 decades has had a zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment. IT work is the easiest place to _prove_ sexual harassment. Do you know anyone working in IT that does not know how to take a screenshot? How to use a thumb drive or send an email to their private email from work? I'd give much more leeway to a different line of work without the same ability to have evidence of wrong doing but still would not prosecute or form opinion without hearing both sides.

    Given the political climate, I am suspicious of any claim devoid of evidence or corroboration. We have seen false allegations over and over. Not just with women in the work place either, and not with a single media source promoting a specific narrative. Uber should have chat logs and email to validate her claim, and I'll wait for the evidence before supporting _either_ side. Justice does not come from ignorance, and I'm baffled by the continued push by people of a certain political leaning to prosecute based on allegation and one side of a story.

    Those same people accuse others of being "part of the problem" simply for requesting evidence to substantiate a claim. That is a Nazi tactic and quite frightening to continually hear.
