Re:Just more correlation
Good catch on the water injection connection. Water injection, or water flooding, was a process developed in the late 1800's in Pennsylvania, but it did not become mainstream until the late 1920's. The purpose is usually to get the well to produce more. Injection increases well pressure and more oil can be released from a given site.
As you noted, a side effect is that pressure in the underground chambers in maintained using water injection so the risk of massive earthquakes from chamber collapse is reduced.
However, crude oil is much more viscous than water is. underground reservoirs that will hold oil for millions of years won't hold water as well. That water will more likely drain from the areas that would hold the oil. Because the water is less viscous it can flow through permeable layers of rock that oil could not. There is good evidence that this causes many, much smaller tremors. Water injection probably prevents the big collapses that lead to big deadly quakes, but seem to trade it for many smaller quakes.
There are some theories that water injection 'lubricates' fault lines leading to quakes. I think the evidence based jury is still out on that one. This article points to evidence of a few large quakes in areas of heavy drilling in an era before water injection became common. The Oklahoma evidence shows many small quakes in an area where water injection was heavily used. These both theorize the same reason for the quakes, destabilization of structures after the removal of oil. One quickly and catastrophically, the other spread out over time as water flow regulated the rate of destabilization.
However, Southern California is an area of known tectonic activity. The quakes there could have been unrelated, or only partly related to drilling.Oklahoma is pretty stable. Residents of South Eastern Missouri, along the New Madrid fault line, experience plenty of small quakes. But Oklahomans used to worry more about tornadoes than earthquakes. If the Huntington Beach type earthquakes had happened in Oklahoma back in the 1920's, before water injection, I'd say this guy should get a Nobel Prize in Geology (if it were a thing).

Re: I'm so envious
You're talking about summers. I was talking about winters. Our winters are milder than Sweden. And winter temperatures are usually what bother people in northern countries.
You do have bigger / more extensive forests, but we still have some lovely ones, contrary to popular myth. On the other hand, the areas without trees also exposes the geology, which here is often very dramatic. Mountains aren't just rolling canopy, you see their individual lava flows, ash deposits, dikes, all of the columnar basalt, geothermal sulfur deposits (and active geothermal areas), bright red/yellow/black/etc modified areas, consted with brilliant green moss, etc. Our rainbow-colored mountains wouldn't be visible if they were fully forested. Also, we're wetter than Sweden on average, too, so we have a higher concentration of waterfalls. We don't beat Norway in waterfall height (Norway has some of the highest in the world), but we beat them in waterfall power.
Re, nordic unification: hey, count me in. Will you kick out out our corrupt Independence Party politicians?

Who can show the most eloquent dis-respect?
I suggest we have a friendly competition to show who can show the most eloquent disrespect of Microsoft's idea. I like your "... its perceived advantages over Co-operation..." However, here is my entry in the competition: Quote from the story linked by Slashdot: "...it's the sort of gag..." (2016-10-29, 13:14 PDT)
Definition: gag: choke or retch. Synonyms: retch, heave, dry-heave.
So, the Microsoft Surface Tablet is a "gag" of a tablet? Was the writer of that article unconsciously showing his disrespect?
Microsoft Windows 10 is a "gag" of an operating system? From a Network World article: Windows 10 is possibly the worst spyware ever made. Quote: "Buried in the service agreement is permission to poke through everything on your PC." Windows 10 is now "Gag OS"? -

Re:First AI Post
Wordstar was released in June 1979 but the Apple 2 (][
//e //c) also used "high-bit" ASCII two years earlier in April 1977.i.e.
.1 LDA $C000 ; read keyboard
BPL .1
STA $C010 ; clear keyboard
; A >= $80Reading a native character had the high bit set. Writing a character to screen required the high-bit ALSO set unless you specifically wanted INVERSE (0x00..0x3F) or FLASHing characters (0x40..0x7F). See Beagle Bros Peeks and Pokes Chart
> but they still broke the defacto standard because no one else could make use of it.
That's not technically true. Apple DOS 3.2 and 3.3 also used the same trick to signal end-of-string.
Remember, at the time there were 3 ways to signal end-of-string:
* C's null-terminated (ASCIIZ) -- last byte is zero.
* Pascal's first-byte-string-length
* Dextral Character Inverted (DCI) -- the last byte has the sign bit flipped. (This was popular on Apple 2 assemblers such as Merlin. Thankfully this pseudo-opcode has been preserved on modern assemblers)--

Re:More condoms less climate change
What rock do you live under?
You can get the info straight from the Census Bureau, government, private, and academic analyses, etc., etc., etc. More citations than you can shake a stick at.
This isn't an "everybody knows", or "it sounds right, so it must be true", or "I can find a news site that supports my opinion". It's not a "smoking causes cancer" or "too much greenhouse gas causes AGW". It's cold hard numbers collected straight from the principals under US Law.
And this isn't Wikipedia. This is a forum where if you spout off a wrong statement, plenty of people are more than willing to spout a counter-citation, and for that matter, even if you're right.
So don't let other people do your thinking for you. Look it up yourself!

Re:Those links will still break
yes, even if a domain squatter gets the domain.
Additionally, their interpretation of robots.txt is questionable.
It was meant to prevent automated crawlers, not human-requested fetches, yet often the web archive will disallow me from archiving a page because of robots.txt.
This is one reason I often will archive to both http://web.archive.org AND archive.is.
Archive.is explains its robots.txt policy in its FAQ.
http://archive.is/faq#Why_does...
> Why does archive.is not obey robots.txt?
> Because it is not a free-walking crawler, it saves only one page acting as a direct agent of the human user. Such services don't obey robots.txt (e.g. Google Feedfetcher, screenshot- or pdf-making services, isup.me, )
People have asked about this on the archive.org forum but I haven't read them all to see if there are any good answers.

All this fear mongering about Russia wanting to take other countries is just that. You are supposed to be afraid, so you'll vote for strong leaders and lots of money for defence.

No justification of stock price
Like you say the short term growth potential doesn't support their stock price.
Neither does the long term potential unless you have a time horizon of decades.
The high price of Tesla stock reflects that a lot of fund managers think they have a decent chance of huge long term growth.
Not true. Tesla is being held by fund managers because it is a stock people want to own. A realistic appraisal of Tesla's growth prospects doesn't even come close to justifying a $30Billion valuation. A super profitable car company makes something like a 10% margin. Even if Tesla magically sold 1/10th the cars that GM does tomorrow (GM sold 9.8 million vehicles in 2015) and we double their margin to 20% which is far beyond any car company that has ever existed they would take decades to generate enough free cash flow to justify that valuation. No, the ONLY reason Tesla's stock remains high is because people are playing a game of "who's the greater fool" buying high in the hopes it will go higher.
Tesla stock is an expensive gamble but it still has a clearer path to long term growth and profitability than companies like Twitter and Facebook.
Twitter maybe but Facebook is already hugely profitable. You might try actually looking at their financials before posting next time.

Well, Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004, so welcome to the over 12 crowd, I guess?
:) That'd also imply that you got that username at age one, though.Anyhow, Facebook has a lot more user data to sell to advertisers, but most people tell me the ads convert like crap. Marketers love just how fine you can tune your targeting, though.
Don't get me wrong, Twitter does monetize its users to people who datamine the stuff and such, but they haven't been making enough money off it.
Right now, they're just cutting costs so their financials don't look so bad, they can probably stay afloat for quite a while just by being so big. I mean, Yahoo has a NEGATIVE value if you take out their stake in Alibaba and they haven't imploded.... yet.
Don't be too surprised if they get sold at fire sale prices if the economy goes south, though.

Don't be too surprised if they get sold at fire sale prices if the economy goes south, though.

The cupboard of history
Twitter used to be free speech, but now it seems to be banning people right and left with the excuse "hate speech". In many cases the speech contains no insults whatsoever, and in many cases the speech is using clear terms in a non-insulting way to put forth a political view.
Google has several clear examples. For example, Scott Adams was banned from twitter for no apparent reason, and apparently gets banned from periscope [streaming app owned by twitter] whenever he starts talking about Trump.
Twitter is trying to engineer a "safe place" where no one can be insulted, and only approved speech is allowed.
It's bad enough that wikileaks threatened to start its own Twitter in response to the ban of Milo Yiannopoulos.
I think people are starting to realize that twitter's war on free speech makes it less interesting. When a celebrity with 9 million followers gets banned, that's 9 million customers who get put off and go somewhere else.
And I think that wikileaks will eventually be the answer. There's been no public announcement, but it's entirely possible that wikileaks *is* working on a twitter replacement, and of course it would be completely free speech.
By catering to the censors and thought police, twitter is digging its own grave and will get replaced by someone who's not afraid to stand up for free speech.
In a year or two, twitter will be on the cupboard of history, alongside companies (such as Google+) that restricted and pissed off its customers.

vector vs raster?
Unless the fonts are rasterized into an image can't you just change the font to your liking with an extension?

Is this the same "One Decade" we were promised...
...in 2006 by Al Gore? "...unless drastic measures to reduce greenhouse gases are taken within the next 10 years, the world will reach a point of no return", Gore said.
...in 1999, by James Hansen, telling us that the 2000's would rival the 1930's for the highest ever... of course, then we went into a "hiatus" of global warming. Original article.
...in 2006, by this group, saying, Extinction is OUR choice, unless... .... within the next 8 years we have STOPPED using fossil fuels, PLANTED millions of trees, ended logging, and PREPARED our cities and agriculture for the inevitable sea rise. OTHERWISE OUR CHILDREN MAY NOT SURVIVE!
...in 2006, by the Independent?
...in late 2006, by Mother Jones?
..in 2004, by James Hansen? Article
Or maybe just google all this from 10+ years ago, telling us we'd all be dead in 10 years. google.com
Let's stop with the hysteria and stick to facts. I'm not against cutting CO2 emissions, I am against needless panic mongering. -

OK, let's see:

If you want more examples then just type something like "best text editor" into google images and weep at the acres of grey-on-grey images that appear.
Here, let me do it for you seeing as how you're a bit out of the loop: https://encrypted.google.com/s...

DNS issues don't usually affect me
I avoid DNS where I spend 95++% of time online via hosts hardcoded favorite sites @ the TOP of hosts (driven by the IP stack itself in kernelmode for best performance) resolved in local system RAM cached!
Sites resolve faster than remote DNS + avoid it being downed or say, kaminsky flaw redirected.
* It works for more speed (adblocking & hardcodes), security (vs. malvertising & maliciously coded sites or malware serving ones), reliability (again vs. downed or poisoned DNS) + anonymity (vs. ad trackers + dns request logs) natively using what you already have, not adding on more that does less & uses more resources + is loaded w/ vulnerabilities.
(DNS security issues enumerated here in 18++ categories w/ 100's of examples from reputable sources https://news.slashdot.org/comm... )

Here ya go. The trouble with suicide by gun is just how easy it is, which is to say, "85 to 91 percent of firearm suicide attempts are fatal".
You might survive the pills and get help. You probably won't survive the gun shot to the head. -
Re:Holy flamebait batman!
Thank you for "giving me the chance" to repost the link to my research that you never bothered to look for, and was sitting right there, out in the open for you to find, simply by looking at my original post. Man, when you lefties don't want to understand something, you really go all out pretending not to see it.

And, of course, there's just plain 'ol google...it can be your friend:

Besides...communists being associated with unions is hardly a surprise at all, on any level; they are fundamentally communist organizations to begin with.
But, hey, since you don't mind communists; vote for Hillary. The Communist Party USA and the Socialist Party USA have both endorsed her.
