still one good reason to "pirate" a song...
If I like a song enough to want a local copy of it, my first step is to check iTunes. Usually I find the song (recent example: Yell Fire by Michael Franti) and its associated album. If I like the other songs enough, I buy the whole thing, otherwise just the one. However...
If the song is NOT on iTunes (recent example: Justified & Ancient by Tammy & the KLF), I click the icon I keep right next to iTunes... Poisoned. It's exceedingly rare not to find exactly what I want on P2P. As far as I'm concerned, I made a good faith effort to pay for it, and my conscience is clear.

Re:Download while you still can
I wouldn't actually use LimeWire on a Mac, unless you're looking for that feeling of a sucking chest wound.
3a: Poisoned - giftd, Ares, OpenFT, Gnutellaa, FastTrack client for the Mac. In Cocoa. Works really well -
Re:Big deal, kazza sucks anyway
There are opensource / unofficial ways into the Fasttrack network.
A friend of mine still likes the Kazaa functionality, but uses a Mac and this:
http://gottsilla.net/poisoned.php
Poisoned is a Mac frontend to:
giFT 0.11.8.1
Gnutella 0.0.10
OpenFT 0.2.1.5
Fasttrack 0.8.5
Ares 0.2.1
Seems to work sweet. Though I far prefer the tracker / torrent model myself. -

Re:.mp3 format?
you are forgetting that kazaa and limewire have every song available in unprotected MP3 formats
Bull. Dream Syndicate (an 80s era rock band) is hard to impossible to find, as are the Hoodoo Gurus. Natalie Merchant, Rage Against The Machine, Al Stewart, Janes Addiction, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Widespread Panic, Rush, The Police - all artists for whom I own tapes or damaged cds, and can't easily replace via p2p. Sure, you might get some hits, but whole albums? I think not. It took me almost a year of searching ('though not every day) to find all of Everclears first album. I never did find Pond, and so purchased it from the ITMS. Even some newer music, such as Dr Dre, is difficult to track down. If my 13yr old got fed up with p2p, then really, how easy is it? And we use Poisoned, which searches FastTrack, Gnutella, Ares and OpenFT from one browser.

Re:The question is
if your on OSX get Poisoned, it uses the giFT daemon , which has plugins for fasttrack. So the Mac defense doesn't work anymore
;-P -
Re: Limewire = java based.
Personally, I prefer Poisoned. Multi-network, efficient, handles large numbers of searches and downloads well, &c. Also GPL.

Switcher linksI've probably switched about a dozen people by now. so here's some of the things i show them when they first start.
Important URLs:- Mac Rumors - Good rumors website
- Mac Slash - Slashdot like mac news site
- Mac News Bytes - Good quick links to mac related articles
- Version Tracker - Software update website. Kind of like download.com for mac.
- Mac Update - Similar to versiontracker.com
- Mac OS X Hints - Good tips site for beginners and experienced people alike.
- Think Secret - Another good rumors site. Very accurate, most of the time.
- Emulation.net - Links to game emulation for mac
Important Apps:- Adium - Multi-protocol IM client
- Byte Controller - Good itunes hotkey/menu pager applet
- Camino - Nice mac based gecko browser.
- Colloquy - Webkit based IRC client. not too newbish.
- Cyberduck - SFTP/FTP client for os x
- Desktop Manager - Multi desktop app for os x
- Apple X11 Server - Apple's integrated X11 server. you'd want this for the next two items
- Fink - UNIX software for your mac
- Gimp.app - decent free photo editor
- Handbrake - DVD to mpeg4 ripper
- iTerm - Multi tabbed terminal
- Logorrhea - iChat log viewer/searcher/indexer
- Meteorologist - Weather applet for the menu bar
- Menu Meters - Menu applet for cpu usage, net usage, and more.
- Mplayer OS X - This app will play just about any media format in existance
- Poisoned - GiFT (Kazaa) and mldonkey based P2P mac client.
- Quicksilver - Very cool file/application/url/itunes/etc/etc/etc indexing program. It's like spotlight, only here TODAY and free!
- VLC - Another good video playing app. Nice to have a backup sometimes if mplayer doesn't play a file (which is very very rare).
That's the jist of things i give them. Besides that. play with expose. it is godlike. i recommend setting the screen corners for maximum efficiency. Besides that, the best thing you can do is to just play around with the apps and system until you're comfortable -
Re:Better?
giFT isn't a GUI - it's a p2p network daemon - you run it, it connects to p2p networks, then a seperate client program (I use apollon) presents a GUI, communicating with giftd via unix sockets. Or possibly TCP, not sure. Poisoned is a Mac OS X GUI for giFT.

Re:I've got a better idea
Of course it is, but I have yet to meet anyone in person who uses Limewire and is not a Mac user.
Have you met anyone using a giFT client?
Too bad the promenent Windows client dropped support for FastTrack/KaZaA (they got hit by a C&D by Sharman), but it still searches Gnutella (not as well as LimeWire, I have to admit) and OpenFT (my all time favorite network, although it's very unstable--if you can connect, it's great, giFT devs are reworking parts of the network code to fix some huge bugs, so good things might happen there).
Mac users get Poisoned (currently under a rewrite, but it's opensorce, supports FastTrack, Gnutella and OpenFT and has a nice fourm :) ). There are other clients, see the outdated list here. giFT is very nice, opensource (note: Xfactor, the other Mac OS X client, is NOT opensource, that's one of the reasons I stick with Poisoned), free, and supports major networks--it's pretty nice! -
One more reason to...

Re:Mac + Windows = Success
Nice post, but a little out of date, as I see no mention of Poisoned which is a front end to giFT. giFT supports FastTrack (Kazaa), Gnutella, and OpenFT (a hot little network). Personally I'd rather run Poisoned than Kazaa any day.
Furthermore, the BitTorrent community is alive and well on OS X. Azureus works really well, and there's a hot little native client that is better than the standard one.
I've been using the Overnet command line client, which sucks but gets the job done better than the various front-ends floating around.
And then there's Hotline, Carracho, and the new open-source client-server model "Wired".
Enjoy. -
Kazaa for Mac
Moreover, Ward uses a Macintosh computer at home.
Kazaa runs only on Windows-based personal computers.
Says who? Poisoned works just fine for me. -
