That's a lot of rigs dude!
What has been seen cannot be unseen. That car reminds me of the Homer Simpson bit where he plugs in every accessory into the car. I'd get pretty nervous leaving that much expensive kit in the car, it might get stolen. However a thief could only use it to talk to radio amateurs. I see no Morse key. For more "whackers" check out http://www.hamsexy.com/ it does poke fun at a hobby that can take its self too seriously some times

Re:At least it's not the HF bands...
In the last rounds of floods around here (CN88) the county emcommies did a great job of dashboard surveys. As far as large-scale events: earthquakes, use of hams is a large part of the scenario when the county's trunking system goes down. On the Indian rez where I live we're putting a D-Star repeater (73cm) up with full support of the Tribal EOM and PD. We're also working on a HF net between the local tribes to pass health & welfare traffic mostly because everyone is related to everyone.
There is a lot going on these days in some areas but I do agree that the safety-vest gang does need to get training (at least IS-200 if not IS-400, and a CERT class) to know when to keep out of the way.

The beginning of the death of Ham Radio?I'm a rarity among ham radio operators these days:
I shower often, brush my teeth, wear deodorant and don't live at home. Not to mention I'm under 30. (rimshot)Seriously, folks: unless there is some way that the FCC and the BPL operators can guarantee with 100% success that interference won't occur, this is going to really wreak havoc on the hobby.
During the "great blackout", hams were actually really important in helping emergency services communicate after backup generators powering the Public Safety radio systems died. Introduce a technology that prevents hams from persuing their hobby recreationally, and eventually, they'll all go away.Ergo, when the lights go out again, there's hardly anyone around to help.
But let's look at something else: how vindictive and brazen some of these older "1337" hams are.
You start to fuck with their only hobby, and I'll bet you dollars-to-donuts that they'll fight back.
Part of the thing with BPL is that while it interferes with Amateur Radio frequencies, Amateur Radio frequencies can interfere with them in turn. It's going to be very hard (if impossible) to stop some stinky, angry ham operator from pulling up next to some power lines in his tricked out hamsexy truck and pump a couple hundred Watts of RF into the BPL lines.
A couple months of continual service outages would drive customers away.
Beware the wrath of a stinky ham.
