ICE
... suuuuuure.
Purely as a novelty, the geek might ask himself what ICE is and what it does.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has quite a lot on its plate, as this list of Programs would suggest.
The Cyber Crimes Center (C3) Child Exploitation Section (CES) investigates the trans-border dimension of large-scale producers and distributors of images of child abuse, as well as individuals who travel in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in sex with minors. The CES employs the latest technology to collect evidence and track the activities of individuals and organized groups who sexually exploit children through the use of websites, chat rooms, newsgroups, and peer-to-peer trading. These investigative activities are organized under Operation Predator, a program managed by the CES. The CES also conducts clandestine operations throughout the world to identify and apprehend violators.
C3 brings the full range of ICE computer and forensic assets together in a single location to combat such Internet-related crimes as:* Possession, manufacture and distribution of images of child abuse.
* International money laundering and illegal cyber-banking.
* Illegal arms trafficking and illegal export of strategic/controlled commodities.
* Drug trafficking (including prohibited pharmaceuticals).
* General Smuggling (including the trafficking in stolen art and antiquities; violations of the Endangered Species Act etc.)
* Intellectual property rights violations (including music and software).
* Immigration violations; identity and benefit fraudThe phrase "images of child abuse" is telling. This is how the professional in law enforcement defines child pornography.
Operation Mango -- An extensive investigation that closed down an American-owned beachside resort in Acapulco, Mexico, which offered children to sexual predators. The resort was a haven for pedophiles that traveled to the facility for the sole purpose of engaging in sex with minors. The proprietor of the business was convicted. As a result of this investigation and others, the government of Mexico recently created a Federal task force to address crimes against children in its country. Cyber Crimes Center
The VGTF is an international alliance of law enforcement agencies from the U.S., UK, Australia and Canada, working together to make the Internet a safer place; to identify, locate and help children at risk; and to hold those who commit on-line child abuse appropriately accountable. On-line child abuse includes activities such as searching for, sharing and downloading images of children being physically and sexually abused and engaging children in chat rooms with the intention of committing sexual abuse both on and off-line. The VGTF delivers innovative crime prevention and crime reduction initiatives to prevent and deter individuals from committing on-line child abuse.
ICE also partners with several Non-Governmental Organizations, including the National center for Missing & Exploited Children, Netsmartz, World Vision and Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, to fight crimes against children. Operation Predator -

Re:Great idea, narrowly averted
Apparently the job has alredy been delegated to the DHS/ICE who conduct clandestine international operations under the guises of thinking of the children among other things.
Recent Slashdot article somewhat related.
Based on the way the DHS conducts themselves at state and international borders inside or out of airports, giving them more ability to bully citizens is certainly a bad idea. In fact, the creation of the DHS was a bad idea. Soon agents will be receiving warrants to sieze all of your computers because they saw that you visited the pirate bay or isohunt. -
Re:Parity?
This is insane. This kid is looking at 10 years for modifying hardware while another story linked right at the bottom of the same article describes a cop getting a one day suspension (with pay) for running down a child with his car
It would be a modest accomplishment, I think, if the geek began to grasp the essentials of a federal system - federal, state and local jurisdiction.
ICE is the enforcement arm of US Customs and Immigration. That's a big gun and not a cap pistol.
To make it into their sights you really have to work for it.

Duh, ICE is a Dept Within DHS
The DHS wants you to think of them like this: http://www.dhs.gov/index.shtm
But this is what they really are: http://www.ice.gov/
No quarter to tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
Well, from Wikipedia:
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a federal law enforcement agency under the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
...Of course ICE is a agency under DHS
... I don't understand what your point is. So they have a division that deals in customs and immigration. Can you just shut up? There's no need to post on every goddamn story. -

Re:Hand It Over to Someone More Capable
I'm also puzzled as to why EldavoJohn mentioned the USAF, but it comes as no surprise to me that a seemingly unrelated government agency is going after these guys.
After all, what does Immigration and Customs have to do with this and this?
We might as well assume that any "Federal" agency can go after whomever they want, "compartmentalization" be damned. After all, what ever became of that whole illegal NSA wiretapping thing? -

Re:It must be just me...
How much of the problem is people walking over the border, compared to people overstaying their visas?
There aren't a whole lot of problems with people overstaying their visas... at least here in California. Those who are here on visa can be tracked down fairly easily... known locations, pictures, etc. And they do find those people most of the time when a visa expires and there's no application in the system to get an extension or anything. The majority of aliens (I don't care if that word is "politically incorrect"... they're aliens to the USA) in California have no papers whatsoever. There are raids in the Canal district in Marin County where they arrest often tens, sometimes hundreds of people that are here 100% illegally (I've watched an ICE raid happen... this is not bullshit).
The fact of the matter is that, even though our system is very slow and horribly outdated, it is our system, paid for by our taxes, and if you want to come to the United States, you have to follow the proper guidelines and use the proper process. I am not a racist person. I make racist jokes all the time, but I don't hate Hispanics (or any other race, but face it, the illegal immigration problem is primarily Mexico) by any stretch of the imagination. I do hate people who are here illegally, though, and I have zero sympathy for them when they get deported and separated from their family.

Re:Best reply
DHS runs ICE, which operates a number of detention facilities, not to mention the numerous "black sites" that exist around the world. (This would be the CIA in most cases, if you want to get technical, though I don't know if they were in charge of Maher Arar's case.)

Re:Time to recycle a "meme".
DHS are the gestapo. They have been explicitly referred to as the Gestapo by two lawmakers, Luis V. Gutierrez(D-ill) and Sam Farr(D-CA).
They have been placed in charge of thoughtcrime and IP enforcement among others.
Are these the guys you want banging at your door at random for the inevitable(give it a few more years) state-sponsored "health and wellness" checks? -

First fucking ethanol-addled post of the new year, Pacific time! Man. It's finally here. The era where whites are too idiotic to wipe their own assses(too idiotic to run the U.S.A.) and that a black man must take over to ensure the freedom and privacy of proper-thinking individuals.
Americans already view Europe(okay, Northern Europe at least) as being a utopia: none of the "Big Brother" bullshit(though it's encroaching, and you MUST stop it!) of telecom immunity with all of the benefits of learning 3 languages with almost-free education.
Europeans at large -- It's a "baby boomer" issue...you need plenty of cheap labor for your services...why not kick out all of the Muslims(who will bomb your libraries and slash your filmmakers' throats anyway) and import the civilized light-skinned American expatriates?
Hell, America's economy is mostly service-based anyway and will become even moreso in the near future! You'll receive plenty of intellegent, hard-working people who were smart enough to leave the U.S. before Halliburton and Blackwater gained control of the U.S. and sneakily passed legislation to award the ICE under the umbrella of "Homeland Security" the national "get-away-with-what-we-want-to" Gestapo Award. What should have been bag-checkers have cancerously grown into thoughtcrime enforcers and I.P. enforcers breaching all borders you can imagine.. Yes, the gestapo are here. They were steadily creeping for awhile but the Bush administration sealed the deal for 1984'ing the U.S. Those of you family values fags who voted Republican should raise your pistols up to your fucking crania and pull your collective triggers.
American Slashdotters -- please become politically involved. If there's anything the past 8 years have shown us, it's that our government are nothing more than greedy hedonistic fucks which will run unchecked unless somebody slaps their wrist every 5 seconds. It would be kind of cute if they weren't brewing a gestapo takeover. We will be the ones to tell them to fuck off and get back to work every 5 seconds. RELIGION MUST BE OUTLAWED. The department of "Homeland Security" must be dismantled. TEAR DOWN THIS WALL! -

Hmm...A couple choice quotes:
A carefully crafted acquisitions regime...
...we have to find specific areas or roles where the government can add value...Those two alone make this whole thing a joke. But wait, there's more:
...and a humane and common-sense approach to dealing with the millions of immigrants who are already in this country illegally...
Hmm, humane and common-sense. Like this, this, this, and this among others? I'm no apologist for illegal immigration, but the United States can do better than that. And, about privacy. The only reference he gave was to the Privacy Impact Assessments page which is only a vague public description of their banal, internal standard operating procedures. It says nothing about their interactions with other agencies. He lauds that the office must be top-level for the sake of interoperability with other agencies, but then behaves as if the DHS is the only one involved here. And nobody has yet answered the question: what does "homeland security" have to do with this?
It's nice to see high-ranking officials humor us by pretending that we exist and answering our questions, but they never say anything profound or useful. It's all Fluff and BS. -
CPT & OPT??
Are you on a F-1 (student) visa? If so, check out Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) as options. It will help you immensely to get in touch with your university's international students department (may be called something different depending on your university). They will be able to help you verify if those options will work for you or not.

Re:DHS = Get Out of Jail Free card
DHS controls ICE see: http://www.ice.gov/about/faq.htm my ICD and API docs come with a nice big seal from DHS. So yes, the number of issued visas is under the DHS purview. The particulars of how a visa is granted, why, and to whom are not under direct control of DHS... merely the number, adjudication, and tracking.
Prior to 2003 these authorities were held by the DoJ but they shifted to DHS.
Who is inside the country is a data point that DHS is decidedly interested in. This is a reality I work with every single day as I develop software that tracks the whereabouts of visa holders. -
Re:-1, Sensationalist Headline
Read further, my friend. Bachelor's degree with an F-1 is all it takes, which can be accomplished with one academic year at a less-competitive school. Perhaps you're confusing this latest action with the H-1B Advanced Degree Exemption, which sets aside 20,000 H-1B visas for foreign workers with a Master's or higher level degree from a U.S. academic institution.

Re:Something is rotten...
Google is your friend.
http://www.ice.gov/pi/dro/facilities.htm
Something doesn't smell right about all of that.
You're right that doesn't smell right, because I didn't say or imply any of it.
The bottom line is /you/ being allowed into the country and /your stuff/ being allowed into the country are two very different questions. In short, YES, borders ARE exceptions and have codified as such since the Tariff Act of 1789 that established the Customs Service--and with it the authorization to search, seize and/or levy duty upon any goods crossing the border.
Now, there is the problem of non-citizens when neither this country nor their own is particularly keen on letting them in. So, they have no visa, residency or citizenship for this country and their own refuses to take them back for reasons that don't particularly thrill us either. Short of a fly-over and pushing them out with a parachute, what do you think happens? Hmm? Three hots and a cot, babe. -
Don't Ask Slashdot, ask ICE
Instead of asking a bunch of Slashdotters what they think the government might say, why not ask the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency themselves. ICE and the Department of State have joint jurisdiction over ITAR. I've never been able to figure out who handles what, but I'd recommend starting with ICE. You can call them at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE. (Yes, this may be the first time in Slashdot history that someone has recommended calling DHS not as a joke.)
ICE has a program called Project Shield America that is designed for exactly this type of thing. Their goal is to try to educate industry about what can and can't be exported.
http://www.ice.gov/pi/news/factsheets/shield071204 .htm
Lastly, IANAIA (I am not an ICE agent) but I suspect their answer is probably going to be that exporting UAV technology to Iran is a no-no. I'm sure it depends on exactly what you are doing, but from a quick googling, it looks like a lot of UAV related technology is restricted.
Why is it that I feel like I'm about to get modded back into the Stone Age? -
The persecuted GeekThe fed doesn't seem to want to raid businesses for hiring illegal aliens, but they spend their time raiding businesses and homes for having mod chips.
Morning Edition July 2, 2007 Some 62 illegal immigrants in Beardstown, Ill., who worked for a company that cleans a pork processing plant, are preparing for deportation following an immigration raid. One family anticipated problems and has a house waiting in Mexico. Illegal Immigrants Anticipate More Raids
Do you want to hear a recital of all the stories like this that can be found in a one-minute search through Google?
As the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is primarily a law enforcement agency. In addition to the core law enforcement occupations, there are also hundreds of professional and administrative functions that support the ICE mission. ICE has approximately 15,000 employees working in 400 offices nationwide and over 50 locations internationally. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
Why does it always surprise the Geek that law enforcement multi-tasks? That the game of life hasn't dealt him a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card?

How can the INS have time to pick up illegals when they don't exist anymore? The law enforcememnt part of immigration is now handled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the administative part of immigration is now handeled by Citizenship and Immigration Services.

when my comp. was confiscated, they left the cd...
for those curious what software some "law enforcement" agencies use, it seems that ICE uses Encase because they left the encase boot cd in the drive after they gave me back my laptop, 6 months after they stole it from me.
they had unjustly confiscated my laptop with no explanation after i landed in New York. (and my name is not Yusef Islam, but i do like his music.) it gives me comfort to know, however, that as they spent/spend their time and U.S. taxpayer money getting files off of my laptop and reading my email (or the part of it that wasn't encrypted), there are people around the world plotting to overthrow the U.S. government. -
Re:Superbowl Counterfeit squads
This year, as with most, they also tied up the resources of the host city and state police forces (in this case, Worcester city and Massachusetts state police), shutting down the "counterfeit" sellers and seizing goods.
The host city Super Bowl XXXIX was Jacksonville, Florida. Thus it was the Jacksonville cops who helped U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement seize a bunch of fake Super Bowl schwag this year.
Perhaps you were thinking of the hometown of the Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, they play in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
As for Worcester, it is pretty far down the list of potential Super Bowl sites. -

Ok, I just watched the video on ICE's page... They started with Google to get to Elite Torrents? why aren't they going after Google then for putting Torrent sites on their search engine. Better still - they have a copy of the movie playing when they visit the site, meaning they had a copy before they went there. Why does this smell like a setup?

revenge of the sith indeed
I can't tell if its fake or not yet, there seems to be evidence pointing in both directions, however if it isn't then it was shut down because of 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith'. Ussually a film gets released by a group on a topsite in 'the scene' and is then raced to other FTPs and then onto everywhere else and appears on torrent sites like Elite Torrents a couple hours later at best. This time however (just like with Kill Bill a few years ago) a workprint was stolen from a DVD release group known as ViSA and managed to appear on Elite Torrents first before it was PRE'd on the topsite, this means the first place you could get the new Star Wars movie anywhere on the internet was Elite Torrents. Then a week later they are shut down, and not only are they shut down but homeland security posts a picture of elitetorrents with a pirated star wars over at http://www.ice.gov/graphics/ Perhaps the Star Wars release was the straw that broke the camels back

That star wars video they show sure does look nice. No timestamps at the top of the video, as was in the torrent description of the link they picked. It looked better than cam quality too. -
check out ICE.gov website
ice.gov website says they cracked down on the 133,000-member EliteTorrents network. http://www.ice.gov/graphics/news/newsreleases/art

Re:Department of Shitty HTML involved?Same here. In fact, if it weren't for the CNN article (or the ICE article and movie (82.8MB, AVI) from their site), I would believe it was fake (i.e. ET was just defaced). I have no clue why the FBI would use such a God-awful page, since their site isn't that bad, nor is the ICE site.
It's a shame too -- ET was a nice source for torrents (not illegal ones...;-))

Re:Had copies?
ICE says otherwise. Their domain probably was jacked, but not by some hacker.

Customs should have offered a torrent...
...of the video on their website, here. It's an 82 mb file and they would have saved a lot of bandwidth. If they did that; talk about irony.
