Suing / Sale Info / BBB / Etc
There are a few thoughts swimming around on this:
Sueing:
Yes you can sue but if you have this issue, then there are probably others with the same issue. Just get a list and then contact the company with the list and threaten a class action suit. Simply put, organizing a complaint and adding lawyer fees should get you your warrenty honored.Business Sales Info:
You might request from the business a copy of the sale contract for the company. Within the contract there will be a clause as to who is responsible for any liabilities of the company that are not specifically named in the contract. This can be done with a subpeana if needed.BBB:
File a complaint and make sure that it is documented.Internet Fraud Complaint Center:
Go see if there is a way to file a complaint here too, just to make life more interesting. The site is: http://www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp -
Re:even worse.
Report it to the fed's internet fraud department: http://www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp

Anti-annoyanceware virus?
From symantec, it almost sounds like the worm is trying to decrudify your system. It attempts to kill the realplayer, quicktime, gator, and many spyware/malware/adware toolbars. It alsocleans them out of the registry, and deletes their files.
Too bad it also opens an FTP, IRC connection, and many others, but I do wonder if it's a variant on code originally intended to clean rather than infest?
I also quite like how MS directs you to complain to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center Web site, I'm sure they really appreciate all the extra phonecalls about infected operating systems... -
Report them
Though you probably have the physical magazine, file a report against them at http://www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp and then tell NorthShoreAgency that you have filed a fraud complaint against them with the FCC and the FBI and give them the reference number.

Re:Microsoft happy with IE?
So - has anyone reported a complaint to the IFCC (or other) website, complaining that Microsoft should be investigated for creating hugely buggy code and then blaming everyone else for the security holes?
That has to be worthwhile, surely!

More Methods to Fight Website Theft
My project TuxMobil: Linux with Laptops, Notebooks, PDAs, Mobile Phones and Portable Computers has been under the attack of content thieves some times. Therefore I have decided to sign all my pages with a steganographic watermark. Also I often watch out for stolen content using a special search engine, e.g. CopyScape. In case I detect a fraudulent site, I contact the FBI to Report Internet Fraud and the FTC's Consumer Complaints site (this applies only if the thief is located in the U.S.). And I complain to the thief's ISP.

Re:Sounds like the blacklists are working.
That's not 100% fair - there's only sketchy evidence that the government of Macedonia is turning a blind eye to "massive online credit card fraud". They certainly aren't singled out for special attention in the latest report of the internet fraud complaint center. Rather, the issue stems from the fact that the people compiling these black lists are private organizations - there is no way to appeal against their decision. The author's indignation seems to stem from the fact that his country has been unfairly (in his opinion) blacklisted and that there's not a whole lot they can do about it, because they don't represent a big enough market segment.
Having said all this, the obvious solution to doing business with countries where "collecting payment is a crap-shoot" is to use an escrow service, of which there are several. Yes, this sucks when you want to buy a couple of books from Amazon.com - but you should only have to do it once. Once you have proved your bonafides (and have a customer number) you should be able to carry out furthur purchases with a minimum of fuss beyond sending an email instead of filling out a form...

FTC sharing its info with the FBI?
Since the FTC (not the FBI) is the US government body that gets most UCE/spam complaints, (FBI seems interested only in some types of fraud -- and then only if there are victims, not just attempts) I'll be curious to see if the two bodies are able to cooperate enough for the FBI to actually make use of the FTC's data, of which ther must by now be a mind-blowingly huge amount.

I find this idea fascinating
Having correct registry information would allow me to track down a criminal who hit my credit card recently. It is the first time I've been had by fraud and thankfully it was only for $9.95.
Somehow, somewhere, someone used my credit information to try and sneak past a small charge on my bank statement. The charge of $9.95 came from DAVWEBSOFT. Searching the web for DavWebSoft turns up a very suspicious web site. It appears "professionally" designed, but on closer inspection, many links simply do not work and news items are stolen from other sources.
WebDavSoft's is a near exact duplicate of these web sites: SBC Web Solutions, Stewart's Precision Web Design, Eadens Enterprises, Fleming Software LLC, Global WebLine LLC, Studio A Design, Prosoftware Inc, Luministic Technologies, Kazland Software Corp, Bailey Consulting Group LLC, International Web Design, GToolboxes Technology INC., Tanya Web Design, Andersoft Inc, Panaginip Salohin Corp, Web Pages Made Easy LLC, E Software Tech Inc., Webtemp Solutions, Inc, and Resourcepdc Inc. Each site lists different fake addresses and phone numbers. Try contacting the phone number listed on any of the pages and you're dumped into anonymous voice mail.
Besides stolen copy, links that aren't links, and duplicate web sites, the most obviously fraudulent element is that each main page has a link to "Don't Recognize a Charge?" which then asks for credit and other personal information. Gah! What sort of company prominently displays "Don't Recognize a Charge?" on their main page?! None, except fraudsters.
If you happen to be a victim of fraud, report it to the FTC and the IFCC.
I would love to catch the criminal behind these web sites before they strike anyone else and correct Whois information would rock my vigilante world.

Re:Pointless laws
Go to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center to report fraud.
-
maybe you're doing it wrong.
you can go to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center and fill out an online report. there is a spot for kiddie porn. it's a joint venture of the fbi and the national white-collar crime center.
you get a pdf reciept for every complaint you file. i know. i've been sending them every piece of spam i get for the last two months. -
Internet Fraud Complaint Center
Recently I have started reporting my spam to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (in addition to the FTC and SpamCop). Has anyone else tried filing complaints with this agency? What have your results been?
-
Re:We still need to know more...
There is another post on this topic that links to the report from The Internet Fraud Complaint Center.
This is where all the original complaints were filed, and checking the graphs, only 24.9 percent of people had reported the crime to other law enforcement agencies prior to contacting the IFCC. This is not a case of AG Ashcroft misusing his office, rather it is the system in action, and I'd like to see more of these criminals brought to justice. -
Nice link...
if you want to get into the details(pdf file)

Re:important matterThe best scamming of the nigeran scammers that I have yet seen is here: http://www.haxial.com/fraud/mikeaba.html
The person who was scamming the scammer got very elaborate, sending fake passports, documents, etc. with the name "James Kirk". It's quote funny.
I tried the same thing some months back and I actually got the scammer to fax their documents to the FBI electronic fraud group. He e-mailed me back saying he phoned "my number" which actually was the FBI and the woman there said there was no James Kirk
... heheBut seriously, if you receive a physical letter and you're in the USA, fax it to the FBI at (202) 406-5031. The Internet Fraud Complaint Centre is worth a visit, and in canada you can forward all such e-mails to wafl@phonebusters com which is Phonebusters which is a fraud specialist group that's federally funded.

Who to Contact If You've Been Ripped Off
I posted much the same message on the OC Systems thread yesterday, but it also applies here. There seem to be a lot of "Yeah, I got ripped off, but eBay wouldn't do anything about it so now I'm hosed" responses. If you've been ripped off, COMPLAIN. Complain to the company first, but if they don't give you any satisfaction, have the charge blocked on your credit card. If that isn't enough, or that isn't an option, then you need to bring out the big guns and rat them out to the feds! And here are just the websites to do it on:
http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/fraud/MailFra udComplaint.htm: The US Postal Inspector's Mail Fraud Report Form. I've used this for a few small value (less than $50) items I've returned to ebay merchants who then didn't send the refund despite repeated e-mails and phone calls. After complaining to the USPS, the rip-off artist got a letter from them and paid up darn quick. And you CAN follow up if no action is taken. I have a lot of criticisms of the U.S. Snail, but this is one area where government action actually seems to work.
https://www.ifccfbi.gov/cf1.asp : The FBI's Fraud Complaint Form. The FBI seems a lot less active in prosecuting small cases than USPS, but i get the impression that if they get a LOT of complaints from people on the same company, they start to look in on it. Worth a try.
Remember: Every time you let someone rip you off without calling them on it, it makes it that much easier for them to rip off other people down the line. -
Who to Contact When You've Been Ripped Off
A lot of comments on this thread (and pages linked from same) seem to indicate that OC Systems are rip-off artists. While I have no way of knowing whether this is true or not, I am rather disheartened by the "Yeah, I got ripped off, but I'm just going to suck up and take it and never buy anything from them again" responses I've seen.

Re:Meta tags aren't so useful
You forgot "russ nelson", the Amish wannabe-geek who fucks teenage boys for cash. He's really popular in Linux-luser child molester circles, as evidenced by Google's adult search statistics for last month -- three of the top 500 adult-oriented search strings included his name, with "russ nelson underage preschool cherry" being #51. (Underage Preschool Cherry is the name of Russ's revolutionary scientific study regarding how many dollar bills the average preschool boy requires to... well, I won't say more, lest I offend the delicate homophobic anti-child pr0n sensibilties of the average Slashdotter. If you're interested in seeing this fine move, you can request a free copy from the Flemish Boys' Institute -- just enter your contact information here.

Rerport them to the DOJ
The DOJ has a web site dealing with Internet fraud here: http://www.ifccfbi.gov/. There, you can find a link to a page with instructions on how to report this. I suggest EVERYONE follows these instructions. If enough people do that, the DOJ will notice and take action.
