If an orphan baby is adopted by parents from a different race, and is surrounded by people of that race, how would he even know what his "own" race is? As long as you keep him away from mirrors, he would not even be able to tell that his face looks different, and althought he could see that he has a different skin color than everyone else, as a toddler he would also have different size and proportions, a far greater difference.

There is no way that a) Downey is going to agree to doing an ensemble picture as a bit player after headlining 2+ Iron Man movies, or b) That the studio is going to spring for the big money it would take to hire him, just for an ensemble role in a risky new franchise.

They don't get excited, or swayed by passion, they just decide how much money they're going to make from the rubes, and add up the 'value' of their 'talent' until it meets the required number.

Whedon's last movie was 5 years ago, and bombed. His TV work since then has been small beer. Nobody wants to make a movie that 'only' grosses twenty five or even fifty million; I don't see this panning out any time soon.

I've been on too many bulletin boards lately trying to post links... :)

However, I would feel happy if I had it, and people are willing to pay for happiness.

Of course Apple wants you to believe that you would feel happy if you had it. And perhaps you would feel a shallow sort of sham happiness (mostly a placebo marketing effect) for a few days, or even a few weeks, if you had one.

But no material thing -- not an iPad, not a brand new sports car, not an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle -- will make you truly happy. Nor will other people, who have this annoying tendency to change, to disappoint your expectations, to get old and sick and to die.

The good news is that, knowing this, you can stop wasting so much time and energy looking for the things and relationships that are finally going to make you happy. Nothing outside yourself will do it.

Meanwhile, while neither is going to bring me happiness, when looking for tools I prefer actual general-purpose computers to information appliances designed for passive consumers. Fsck the iPad and all the other gilded cages that come out of Apple.

Be careful, there are actually several Screamers movies. They released a sequel about a year ago, which is simply god-awful. The first Screamers movie isn't too great, but as a fan of the short story, you may enjoy it simply on principle.

Have you ever seen the movie Sunshine? That was about as hard sci-fi as it gets. The nerdiness unfortunately was just oozing out of that movie, it was almost too much, even for me. The ending was great though.

If you want in-depth, exhaustive information about other topics, you consult a more specialized resource, such as drum and bugle corps, Star Wars, Star Trek, garden flowers, movies, Pokémon, Peter Pan, travel, alternate realities, etc. Wikipedia even has a mechanism for interwiki linking to many of these resources, recognizing them as independent specialty resources.

I'm just curious on how you can say one mega-corporation is some how inherently "nicer" or "less evil" then another? None of them would listen to you unless you were lined up behind thousands of others with a hundred dollar bill in your hand. Even then they would still take your money and try to low ball the return.

Getting to Chernobyl isn't the overwhelming task of mental fortitude and endurance most of these 'reporters' want you to think it is. You go to Kiev, you spend 40 - 80USD, and you get taken there. It's very official, it's very routine, and you get an interesting experience from it. And a delicious meal at the end of it..

Never been to the Ukraine, but according to what I saw in Everything Is Illuminated, hiring a driver for a sight-seeing excursion to Trochenbrod is ineed an interesting experience. ;-) I'd imagine what's portrayed in the movie is probably as informative and authentic as the photographs in the article, but a helluvalot more fun to watch.

For anyone who hasn't seen The King of Kong, a documentary about shooting for the world record in Donkey Kong, I highly recommend it. It's a bit disturbing to see what goes on in the minds of these types of gamers, and at some points it's hard to believe it's a documentary.

Actually, like many other so-called "documentaries" The King of Kong was apparently full of all kinds of inaccuracies. E.g. Billy Mitchell wasn't really trying to avoid Steve Wiebe, and Wiebe actually held the high score title for a while. It was still a cool film though.
