  1. Re:Lazy fucks. on Nearly Half of Game Developers Want To Unionize (engadget.com) · · Score: 4, Insightful

Real developers are proud to work crunch time to get a game out on time. They know it makes for a better product.

Long work weeks make developers exhausted. Exhausted workers make mistakes. Mistakes cause bugs down the line, i.e. more work, causing an ever increasing need for longer work weeks. The death march takes its toll, and the end result may very well be worse for it. I have seen it happen, and the solution is rarely to increase hours, but for management to show actual leadership and reduce the scope to something manageable.

We usually have three weeks of snow cover each year. Denmark is typically a bit colder than Belgium/Netherlands, but not as cold as Cleveland. We do get some periods where it gets really cold. Some years back we had a longer period with -10C, but on an average winter it rarely drops below -5C for more than a few days at a time. And the temperature is usually around 0C in winter.

This would make their goods more competitive, and would quite likely have reduced the impact of the crisis in 2008 on those three countries and made it easier for them to get over the crisis. The Euro bars them from reducing the value of their currency, which has made German industry a lot of money as it is highly competitive.

  10. and now it just upgraded itself to Android 8.1

Thanks a bunch! I had totally missed the update waiting for me.

Like you I am pretty satisfied with the Moto G5 Plus. The main hardware feature I'm missing would be a better low-light camera, but I suspect that is a problem most (all?) phone cameras are missing.

  14. The recycling process itself is expensive (and the materials recovered limited) and adding a person making even minimum wage to the mix makes it prohibitively so.

It is somewhat surprising that it is cheaper to dig deep into the ground, retrieve ore and extract minerals from said ore than it is to extract the minerals from a finished product. Worse, the price of recycling is placed on all of us through general taxation rather than requiring the producer to recycle the materials going into their products. That would add to the price of the product, making the consumer of the product being the one paying for it.

  15. The law does nothing to address that people who aren't responsible enough to recycle their gadgets in the first place aren't going to be responsible enough to pull the battery before they ditch them or that they won't throw out batteries themselves when they age but the device is otherwise fine.

No, but it does mean that the people working at recycling centers can pull out the batteries for specialized handling.

Regarding new stuff, I ended up bookmarking Recently Added (which, sadly, is not where the link on the front page points) ... which is now mostly out of date compared to the Just Added ... sigh ...

Adding to your list, it would also be really neat if each TV show would include a synopsis of each season, so that when the next season comes along, you can get a refresh. You know, just in case you don't want to rewatch the whole thing.

    I'm not.

As a paying customer looking to relax, I don't want to be interrupted by someone trying to sell me something. 19. Yes, but how do you measure performance? A common option would be to go with with some metric, e.g. stock price, market share and similar, usually paid out in the very short term. However, all of these can be gamed, that is, they can be maximized to provide optimal bonus on the short term. This gaming can time cause significant long term damage to the company. Given that many CEOs tend to leave their jobs for new jobs quite quickly it also means that they pass the effect of their destructive behavior to the next CEO (not to mention the people doing actual work at the company).
