Re:Spoiiler Free ...HA!
Meet 'El Orfanato': http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464141/
It has some twists, but even if you guess all of them in the first five minutes of the film, you will feel the movie.
In fact, it's quite scary/frightening if you're the right kind of person. And, it's better than both 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others'. -
Re:Free Speech vs Right to Lifeis it too much to ask that we take away the free speech of people who are encouraging the killing of not only those men and women, but of ourselves and our friends?
With the first link, a chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. [...] The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we are all damaged.

Re:Why Not?
zappepcs mentioned corporal punishment as a solution. Misbehaving children seems to be a western phenomenon, at least according to the movie East is East. so perhaps a non-technical solution IS in order.
errr...no, i don't have kids. but i'll bloody well be sure to beat them soundly on a regular basis. for the sake of the future. -
Re:Atom-based? That's small!
yeah, but now it comes with more molecules! On that reference of humor Idiocracy , I just saw a real sports drink commercial that said "now with 25% more electrolytes!"

Re:Philip K. Dick Movies -A decent one
Although a little low budget I was pretty impressed with Impostor:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0160399/
based on yet another PKD short story -good atmosphere and good plot twists and a lot more faithful (I imagine) to the PKD style -Hopefully more PKD fans will see it and mod it up (hint) as one of the few movies that retain the spirit of his work.
I also liked 'scanner' in all its bleakness, although the scramble suit wasn't quite how I had visualized it.
I'm just sayin' -
Re:No longer attractive
I agree with you on the anti-intellectual trend. At one point having a sharp, reasonable mind was considered the ultimate asset. Today, it's regarded as the province of the weak, nerdy, the effeminate, etc.
Recently my boss (a man with no degree who obtained his position through good networking) asked me to help define a process for developing new software. I thought it over, and provided him several URLs covering basic project management. He regarded them disdainfully, saying "These look OK, but I wouldn't want to forward these to MY boss, what with all these big words in it, he might think I'm gay or something." Uhhh...ok, dude.
I felt I was *living* the movie Idiocracy, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with this kind of story.
When you think about it, the workplace is a lot like high school. The popular, often dumb (or popular because they're dumb) kids are *still* running the show (management, government) while those of us who couldn't give a rip (scientists, engineers) just want to do our thing in peace. -
Blindness / Brothers Bloom
The two movies I'm most looking forward to this year are Blindness and The Brothers Bloom . The former is about society experiencing an epidemic of blindness and it's helmed by Fernando Meirelles (of City of God and The Constant Gardener). The latter is the new movie by Rian Johnson, who last did Brick. Neither of these are specifically sci-fi in any way (especially Johnson's movie) but I'd figure I'd give a heads up to some interesting projects coming down the pike that aren't meant to be gigantic blockbusters.

a Neuromancer movie is currently in pre-production apparently, scheduled for 2009, but of course that can always change, or never happen.

Re:Disaster
Well you're proven wrong on one part anyway. I can find no mention of Cleese playing Gort anywhere except in the TFS above.
You're right, thank god. Him playing Gort seemed a bit too silly to be true. I already knew the rest of the info in the summary so I didn't read TFA and assumed it was some new info. My bad.
Apologies to Mr. Cleese, who according to the article and IMDB is rumored to be playing Prof. Barnhardt.
Although if you know the original you'll find this quote from the article quite troubling (emphasis mine):
John Cleese is an excellent choice too for a supporting role. I imagine he'll inject some timely humour into a movie that could come across as preachy if its serious message is overplayed.

So, does Willie know they have adopted his culture? Didnt think it really fit the FBI to wander around smoking up and playing guitar all day...

Re:ridiculous straw man"Besides, these people aren't just being put into prison because they might abuse children, they're actively supporting and distributing these acts to other people. Putting someone in jail for kiddie porn is completely reasonable to me"
I really hate acting as devils advocate for this...BUT, what if said images are computer generated, NO real kids abused? Where is the harm in that?
I don't think that there has been any study conclusively showing that viewing kiddie pr0N causes you to commit the real act in person any more than viewing simulated rape makes you want to go out and commit real rape. And yes....some people get off on the real thing.
In this light..does this sound reasonable to you? Disgusting, sure...but, reasonable in cases where no real person was harmed? Today's laws do make this now criminal. Heck, today...you can no longer make a movie like Endless Love
.....just because the subject portrayed underage sex...which does occasionally happen these days....as in the past.... -
"SFC" = San Francisco Chronicle

Reminds me of the movie Zodiac
This reminds me of the movie Zodiac. It was based on the true story of a serial killer in US that sent code letters (similar to this one) to the press. Actually I just noticed that tomorrow Zodiac the movie was released precisely one year ago. The sender of this letter could be inspired by the movie.

Evil Ted: I got a full-on robot chubby. But it can't be as bad as some auto names. As Danny Krell, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran once pointed out to me, I woudn't want to drive a KIA (Killed In Action).
They can't sell a Chevy Nova in Spanish-speaking countries. "No va" is Sopanish for "it won't go". Of course, that goes well with their commercials, "Chevy - Like a rock!" http://www.snopes.com/business/misxlate/nova.asp -
Re:Old Movie - Krull
Yeah watching the Dark Crystal http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083791/ again was kinda like that. It was a fantastic movie... in it's day. Some movies have lasting power, some don't. I wonder what I would feel about Labyrinth about now.

The Richard Chamberlain "Allen Quatermain" movies of the 80s weren't half bad, considering the camp material they had. But apparently there's going to be another shameless cash grab out soon: Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Skulls

Phase IV? Anyone?
This 1970s sci-fi movie immediately came to my mind: Phase IV. In this movie, some scientist study ants which collaborate to spread in a desert-like area and also start to sabotage the science-lab short-cirtuiting computers and AC.
scary thing that those creatures really exist :-) -

Re:I skip ads the right way...
After WWII, the U.S. government quite deliberately began to build a culture of consumption to prop up capitalism. (Great little artcile by David Suzuki here.) It's no coincidence that after 9/11, the one thing the government wanted everyone to do was to buy stuff. It's your patriotic duty to consume, consume, consume!
Right trend, wrong instigators (linking to a trivial consumption piece by a living Canadian is not a good way of showing the U.S. govt instigated something massive 60 years ago). Check out The Century Of The Self (or the web site of your favorite conspiracy theorist) for the more likely culprits -- the biggest of the big boys. They realized if they could get us lost in ourselves we would be easier to control. Once they got all the money (i.e. the Federal Reserve treason), they just needed to keep us all doped up to ensure an uninterrupted flow of cash to themselves. That dope takes the form of consumerism, fashion, video and sports. GOAL!!!!!!

Re:Yeah butIt certainly wouldn't surprise me. Stephen Hawking has had guest appearances and cameos on a number of TV shows, including "Alien Planet" on the Discovery Channel:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0370071/
From everything I've read Stephen Hawking is quite good-natured and has a remarkable sense of humor. He has commented that he's flattered by "MC Hawking", and he showed he was willing to poke fun at himself on the Futurama episode "Anthology of Interest I".Nichols: It's about that rip in spacetime that you saw.
Hawking: I call it a "Hawking hole".
Fry: No fair! I saw it first!
Hawking: Who is the Journal of Quantum Physics going to believe?
Fry: So then my chair tilted back and I almost fell into this freezer thingy.
Hawking: I call it a "Hawking chamber".
(Al Gore got the best line of the episode, though, with "I'm a 10th level Vice President!") -

And my 3 year old eats ice cream all day...
...that kids guilty of nothing other than spending their own free time as they see fit
So if my 3 year old wants to eat ice cream all day, I suppose that's all right too?
I'm sorry, but as long as someone is being fed, clothed, housed, and raised by someone else, they ought to have some responsibilities to give back. As kids, we go to school so we'll be better off than our parents...or at least be able to afford kids ourselves. There are very few career paths that don't require HS any more.
After they leave their parent's house, let them smoke, hitch-hike, and die in Alaska for all I care;) -
Re:An outdated view of technology
That was exactly my point, but I should have taken it a bit further. It's like saying that shoplifters aren't allowed to go to the hospital, or even to prison, since those are both buildings. And yes, I know that copyright infringement isn't theft. If you take a careful look at the ads, they even say so. "Copyright infringement is stealing. (in their opinion) Stealing is a crime. (fact) Copyright infringement is therefore... (false logic, implied in the ads.)
Now, if a shoplifter was to steal from an open-air market (yeah, okay, assuming there's a black market for tie-dyed shirts and handmade magnets), then they couldn't go outside for any reason.
Wasn't that a movie? -

Re:Commercial venture for the greater good
If you remember, back in 1969, watching glorious full-color live images of the Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon, then either your memory is wrong, or you were using chemical enhancement to get the color. (Not unusual during the '60's).
The original camera on Apollo 11 was black and white and had 212 x 218 resolution at 10 frames per second. (It could also do 4x the resolution in each dimension at 1.4 frames per second, but that wasn't used for the news broadcasts.)
See this description for more details, or rent The Dish.
