Re:Great news
Not to mention people persist via referring to common sense.
I don't want common sense. I want good sense .
Laws that restrict game play are unconstitutional
(I don't care if they rope them away from the other games the way they do booze or magazines). As long as they don't control the manufacture or distribution for adults, it's fine by me.
Yet they remain challenged and challenged again. It pops up most frequently when there's a campaign underway and someone needs some free press. Elect me, I'll stop it. Right. They're going to define legislation.
The last time some moron tried something like that locally, it was before Bob & Tom went into syndication. A certain attorney had announced his intention to run. The day after that, he went after Bob & Tom and how profane it was for kids to hear B&T to be broadcast on school busses. The day following day, Bob & Tom had an impromptu party in his (work) office's parking lot. Lots of swastikas & megaphones + other, assorted noises.
Think FM near the end of the movie. The cops basically showed up and begged for a graceful shutdown at the end of the broadcast.
What the moron failed to do, yet others pointed out: if you don't want your kids to hear it on the bus, go to the school board and get another station assigned. It's like George Carlin used to point out: There are two dials on: one to turn it off, the other to change the channel.
The guy has tried to run several times but there's not even mention of it in any media.
I suppose someone could claim it's akin to a near miss with two aircraft, or when a movie or tv states up front The names of the innocent have been changed to protect the innocent. The innocent don't need protection. The guilty do.

Re:Fine the Shops not the kids
I wonder if someone tried that with the game Doom 3 (ESRB:M) and the movie Doom (MPAA:R) would any lightbulbs go on for the cashier.
And I wonder, if they did notice, would they also make a distinction between a movie and an unrated director's cut of the same movie. The Riddick movie and game might be an interesting test pair too. The movie was edited to a PG-13 after initially getting an R, but the Director's Cut version is Unrated. (The game is M.)
Interesting: the IMDb lists the game but does not appear to include its ESRB rating, nor its rating in other countries' ratings systems, unlike how it does include MPAA and others' ratings for movies. -

Just to be a prick (it's what I do...), in the movie Finding Forrester the kid points out that it is acceptable to start a sentence with "and" in modern english to, among other things, make a point. So your assumption that you were wrong was wrong.

Re:This is my day jobI've never understood why people seem so stuck on whether or not we can completely replace gasoline with some other single fuel source. I'm a graduate student working on my Ph.D., and my thesis is on ways that nanotechnology can be used to harvest energy from the sun. I'm not saying that solar energy is the answer to all the world's problems, my point is only that I've done a lot of research on the energy problem, and from what I've read, there is no reason to expect the world's energy supply to be dominated by a single source in the future. To quote E.H. Lysen and B. Yordi from _Clean Electricity from Photovoltaics_, "... the world's energy supply in the twenty-first century will remain a mix of different energy sources, with a gradually increasing role for renewables, enabling a gradual transition to (ultimately) a fully renewable world energy system." (You can pick up a copy at your local library.)
For example, Ford has a concept truck that can run on gasoline, ethanol, or hydrogen. (Other auto makers also have concepts, no doubt.) Also, considering the fact that most people's daily commute is about 24 minutes (24 miles assuming average speed of 60 mph, which is generous), commutes are well within the range of electric vehicles (if anyone would sell one) or plug-in hybrids. That would allow the energy source for your car to be whatever is on the grid. Which allows wind, solar, bio-mass, nuclear, hydro, etc. to enter the picture. Furthermore, bio-diesel has to be considered as well. So, the long-and-short of it is that while ethanol cannot completely replace gasoline as THE next wonder-fuel, it is entirely feasible for all of our vehicles to be run using renewable energy. Besides, ethanol is produced locally and it reduces our dependence on foreign oil (that's for all those Republicans out there). -
Re:Democracy does work!
If I may add my two cents to the discussion (bearing in mind I have no experience in movie production whatsoever), I see two possible good outcomes to this project:
The first one would be if novice (but formally trained) actors would volunteer to take part on this project to try and project themselves into the entertainment industry. I think that this is much more likely on a Star Wars fan movie than for a Star Trek one, since SW has much more popular appeal I dont't see that as an impossibility (BTW, I'm a fan of Star Trek, but as I understand it, its fan base is much more restricted).
The second scenario is the project to work even with untrained actors. There are movies that actually worked that way, for example City of God, and it might even work with Star Wars as well. -
Re:This can be used for evil/ - Looker (1981)
Ever since I watched Looker back in 1981, I've been waiting to see if/when technology would catch up to the capabilities in the movie. We're not quite there yet, but close enough to make me really nervous.

Re:Hollywood is out of ideas
Amusing fact: while promoting 'Batman Begins' in the US, Christian Bale affected a neutral American accent, because he didn't want the American people to be up in arms about an American icon being played by some British guy.
And a Welsh one at that. Outrageous.
As for Irishmen playing American cops, I agree this is ludicrous. Much better, especially if the cop is supposed to actually be of Irish descent, to get a Scot to play the part.

Not all movies are made in Hollywood
Hollywood has long since ceased to show any creativity. It's just about money; nothing else matters. Art, stories, characters? All irrelevant. So we have remakes, sequels, plot-free special effects "movies", movies based on old tv shows, and so on. I remember asking people what the various Matrix movies were actually about, and nobody seemed to have an answer. They just taked about the special effects...
But not all movies are made in Hollywood. There are lots of good independents out there. Hollywood may view "small but interesting" movies as not commercially viable, but here in Canada that's all we can afford to make, so we go ahead and make them anyway. Some of them are self-indulgent crap, but we've made some amazingly good ones too. Some of them tell universal stories, like My American Cousin and Outrageous, while others push the boundaries, like the beautiful and bizarre (and very sad, in the end) Kissed. We also have a substantial movie industry in Quebec, who come up with stuff like Liste Noire and La Contesse de Baton Rouge.
All quirky films, but we do quirky well...
Other countries do their thing: they tell their stories, their way. This is not necessarily Hollywood's way, but with the garbage Hollywood churns out nowadays, who the hell cares?
Do not get me started on reality tv. U.S. reality shows are all garbage. Reality can be done well (e.g. Girl Friday and Spy), but, like all devices, reality can get stale very quickly if it's over-used. And why are both my examples BBC productions?

Re:Slashdot rejected my ask slashdot submission
Is this really true?
Of the top 20 movies at IMDB (voted by users), 4 of them were release this decade. That's a tie with the 1970s, and more than any other decade.
That said, the bottom 20 movies consists almost entirely of releases from this decade.
Of course, a better way to tell would be to average ratings for all movies released in each decade, but I don't think you can get raw SQL access to IMDB (can you?). -
Re:It's obvious why they're *really* doing this
The Sci-Fi channel series is based on the movie (1994) of the same name -- described here in Iternet Movie Database: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111282/

I saw a good movie recently.
Running Scared. Sure, I might have a small crush on Vera Farmiga, but it was acutually a very good movie, I thought.

Re:Simple answer
Don't forget 'Primer' http://imdb.com/title/tt0390384/ made for $7,000 and is excellent. The only movie I ever immediatly rewound and watched again. Also one of the few good time travel movies out there that doesn't gloss over the messy details of causality, but rather revels in them.

Re:It's the "hacktors"
What seems to be missing are compelling dramas with great actors. It is really something to watch movies on Turner Classic Movies cable channel, and see what could be today if only Hollywood could get it togther again.
Just in the last year I've seen some really awesome films: On The Waterfront with Marlin Brando and Eva Marie Saint; Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman and Strother Martin; and yesterday, Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. (this is really an over the top cast of thousands "spectacle" like they don't make any more).
If your cable system has Turner Classic Movies, keep an eye on the schedule for the many gems that surface every week. -

A little research is all you needIm going to take a different approach and say that if you honestly think good movies arent coming out anymore, you arent looking particularly hard.
First of all, video on demand is not the place to begin your search, oh I know its convenient, but chances are you'll only find last years crap that couldn't make back production costs. Best of luck finding something good.
Check out some movie review sites before judging whether a movie is worth your time or not http://www.rottentomatoes.com/ has a pretty good track record with me.
Also, you don't necessarily need to watch something thats come out in the past few years, hundreds of good films have come come out over the past 80 years. I'd be willing to bet that you could easily dig up something good with a quick google search. I personally would much rather sit down with a good film noir than the 99% crap track record hollywood has going on. Start on the IMDB 250 http://www.imdb.com/chart/top and I guarantee you'll never be short of something good to watch.
-
250 films to keep you satisfied
I've felt this way a bit myself lately, so I started picking films from the IMDB's Top 250. I'm sure you've seen many of them, as had I, but no doubt there are as many, or more, that you haven't. I've yet to find one that was anything short of outstanding.

GNAA Announces Victory over AOLGNAA Announces Victory over AOL
GNAA Announces Victory over AOL
Monday, May 17 2004, GNAA, Nigeria"Who is the Greatest Man Alive?" - If you ask Gary Niger, he'll tell you it is most definitely Osama Bin Laden.
The Gay Nigger Association of America (GNAA) announced today further victory in their current program to bring about total breakdown of the AOL customer relation system.
AOL Corporate Policy has been changed after GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) special operative Gary Niger's constant abuse of their "secret question" program designed to provide a futile illusion of security for the mongoloids and sodomites that comprise their customer base.
The "custom question" option, allowing users to create their own question, has been removed following the efforts of Niger and other fearsome Gay Niggers from the GNAA's top secret "Black Ops" divison.
With the removal of this option, trolls are now forced to use pre-approved AOL "secret question" options when signing up for fraudlent accounts for the purpose of downloading gay pornography and meeting up with the clandestine "homo thug" underground.
"I don't know why it changed, exactly. Corporate HQ didn't tell us," said Tracy, an AOL representative. "It happened two or three days ago."
Tracy was unavailable for further comment, as she was masturbating furiously under her desk - claiming that "Ten guys were on the phone and (she) had to take them all on."
An AOL executive, speaking under the condition of anonymnity, said the change in policy came after widespread employee unrest, culminating in an incident of mass sodomy taking place in the Ogden, Utah call center.
Gary Niger and other members of the GNAA "Black Ops" division continue to use the "custom question" trolling technique with various punjabis in the Bangalore, India call center - who haven't gotten the memo yet.
Meanwhile, GNAA Command is working on the creation of new methods of trolling to work within the confines of this new standard, still flush with victory.
Nick Berg's head was unavailable for comment at the time of this release.

GNAA Adopts Trusted Platform ModuleDiKKy Heartiez - Berlin, Norway
In a response to the U.S Armed Forces' new initiative to require Trusted Platform Modules to be standard in all new computers in order to better fight CYBERTERRORISM, the GNAA declares it will follow the initiative set by the U.S Army and do the same. President timecop of the GNAA said in a press conference in Gookyo, Japan this morning that "The war on CYBERTERRORISM is something we must take as seriously as Richard Stallman". This confirms the GNAA's new plans to become the most Secure provider of gay sex in CYBERSPACE, and beyond.
The Trusted Platform Modules will enable us to deliver AIDS free, HIV free, cancer free, poison free, battery acid free, radiation free, and most importantly juden-free and perfectly preserved Holy Gay Nigger Seed to our CYBER-Customers, while at the same time protecting them from Al Quaeda CYBERTERRORISM.
GNAA head of Internal Security, Mr supers, Kike, from Israel, commented in the same press conference that the Trusted Platform Module was originally developed in Israel, by jews and that he was very proud of what his fellow kikes could accomplish while under heavy fire from Hezbollah. He also added that "This is however nothing compared to the FACT that my fellow juden developed the Internet while being held captured in Auschwitz".
About U.S Army
The United States Army is the main supplier of bombs and grenades to the juden of Israel so they can kill and murder innocent cute arabic children and women wearing burkas. The U.S Army is also world known for its intervention in WW2, causing the defeat of the Third Free Reich and the liberation of thousands of judenschweine from happy camps all over Europe. The U.S Army has also killed lots of asian faggots in the 60's and 70's and also a small number of sandniggers in the 90's and in to the new millenium.
About Trusted Platform Module
The Trusted Platform Module started development in Israel by jews funded by the OSS in the year 2000. The project was a co-project between Jews and open source hippies and communists from all over the world. It was taken over by the Microsoft Corporation in the first quarter of 2000, as the jews and commies and faggots couldnt agree on anything and abandoned the project after only 4 days. Its current version varies a lot from the original OSS version.

Re:I've seen...
I'd have to agree. Why isn't the senate looking into the MPAA rating board?
My first piece of evidence against that rating system would be the movie Nuns on the Run
This movie is rated PG-13 but it has a scene in a girl's shower with multiple full-frontal shots.
How is it that our elected officials are more concerned about video game characters having sex than they are about 13 year olds seeing the movie equivalent of a Playboy?

GNAA Adopts Trusted Platform ModuleGNAA Adopts Trusted Platform Module
DiKKy Heartiez - Berlin, Norway

Re:Can't be!
Hell, Disney even made a movie called "The Black Hole". So it MUST exist.

instead the matter pulled in is spun for a while then ejected at near lightspeed
What may happen if a planet falls into MECO? There are who knows how many collapsed stars spinning chunks of matter at near lightspeed.
That's bad news for poor planet Earth, but good news for Armageddon's fans. -
Re:Poor Duke...
OMG, I just realized something.
Duke Nukem Forever can't be done without another "Evil Dead" movie. 3DRealms may have the levels and mechanics finished, but they need that movie for the game's dialog. They can't release the game with sub-par quotes - they've got a reputation to steal^W^W at stake!
No wonder it's taking so long, we've been complaining to the wrong people. Sam Raimi better hurry the hell up!
