Some names of note
David Hayter - Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
George Byrd - Grey Fox (Metal Gear Solid)
Rob Paulsen - Grey Fox (Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes)
Jennifer Hale - Naomi (Metal Gear Solid), Alex (Eternal Darkness)
Guy Cihi - James (Silent Hill 2)
Chris Seavor - Most of the voices in Conker's BFD
But one person really and truly stands out among them all. Jennifer Hale . If you haven't played a game with her in it yet, you are SERIOUSLY missing out. RUN, don't walk to the store, and rent/buy/steal the game. -
No.
My imaginary car weighs nothing, but requires a driver. I (imagine that
;) I weigh 200lbs, and a gallon of gasoline has 1.32E8 joules. A joule is "consumed" in moving 1 Kg 1 meter, a pound is 0.45359237Kg, and 1 mile is 1 609.344 meters. So my imaginary car can get, at best, 1200MPG. A real car will be heavier, and get less than 100% energy efficiency from the gasoline. Even my imagination, powerful enough to reduce my weight to 150lbs, can't make 1200 >= 1700. -
Re:Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic
I would have to agree with the parent poster on this one. The voice acting blew me away. Carth Onasi was great! I loved how you could make him put his foot in his mouth, and he kept stumbling over himself trying to apologise! Not to mention Jolee Bindo! I first took notice of this actor in Animatrix, and was surprised to see him in Lilo & Stich. Incredible voice actor, as he has already been in 25 productions since finishing KOTOR.
But I think what blew me away the most was the use of well known hollywood actors to play bit parts! If I were to make assumptions, I would assume that these are the people who really love their craft, and are willing to take any job, even if it isn't some high profile production with their name in lights. Those are the actors I respect the most.
If I were to push my assumptions even further, if voice acting like this were combined with the details in characters that we will see in Half-Life 2, I think we are going to see some extremely memorable performances by some unknown actors, and it just might shake up how actors and characters are viewed by the Hollywood Studios. -

The Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver series? The outstanding voice work of Simon Templeman as Kain, who also did some voices for Knights of the Old Republic. Micheal Bell as Raziel, who will always be remembered as the voice of just about every cartoon icon from the 80's and 90's. Tony Jay as The Elder God and that creepy evil guy from "Beauty and The Beast". Richard Doyle as Moebius. Paul Lukather as Vorador and he also did the voice of President Johnson from Metal Gear Solid 2. There are several others such as Anna Gunn and Rene Auberjonois but the links contain the relevant info for the curious.
Of course, Kevin Michael Richardson was memorable as Jolee Bindo in ST:KOTOR but I'll always remember him as Saverok from Baldur's Gate. The true gems of KOTOR were John Cygan who also voiced Solidus from MGS2 and Kristoffer Tabori who voiced HK-47, probably one of the best droid comedic relief roles.

Here we go! It's comin' right at ya! Watch out!You damn American geeks need to get some priorities!!!!
With you "Moore's law" and your Radeon 9800's. You consumeristic, built-in obsolence society is a scource on Mother Earth!
I suggest you all watch "Yank Tanks"[*] to see how people in the rest of the world make do with what they've got instead of squandering their lives in the pursuit of material things!
[*]Actually, I do reccommend this film. I could very well envision these people living in some sort of William Gibson futureworld underclass, carefully nursing along long-dead technology and using things for purposes other than their intended use. -

Re:Gay characters are (apparently) all 1-dimension
there are quite a few i can think of. many are indy flicks
- angels in america. in particular, the plots following roy cohn (total bastard, both in the play and in real life) and joe pitt.
- lilies. brilliant (in my not so humble opinion). the action centers on a group of prisoners performing a play describing the events in a small french canadian town in 1912. as the story unfolds, we see a tale of jealousy, revenge, confession, and ultimately the righting of an injustice. (yes, deliberately ambiguous so as to avoid spoilers)
- midnight in the garden of good and evil
- bent. a story of love in nazi death camps.
- gods and monsters. a chronicle of the last days of james whale's (director of frankenstein) life.
- taboo. samurai flick with a twist.
- speedway junky

Re:Netcraft: PBS dieingI can answer at least one easy to remember example: PBS (Or, at the least, our local affiliate) broadcast This Is Spinal Tap, full and uncut, as one of their Saturday evening matinees. I don't recall exactly when I turned around in surprise at the utterance of profanity, although I believe it was after Ian called Sir Denis a poofter and before the F-laced argument where Nigel walks out. Airdate -- very approximately -- was sometime in 1997.
Didn't bother me that they did it, wouldn't really bother me if they bleeped, but one should expect, I think, that a government-operated media outlet will align itself with the government in power. Not a shocker...

Re:Since when is
Since when has it been acceptable to say those words on broadcast television?
All civilized countries leave this to the discretion of the tv station (to show "adult" material at appropriate times) and the good taste of the audience (to turn it off if they don't like it).
The first time I heard signifcant quantities of four-letter words on TV was Phoenix, arguably the best cop show ever made (anther contender would be Between the Lines, a fine piece of drama, also with adult language and themes). It was all in context, and made perfect sense: the people the Major Crime Squad track down are not nice people at all, and their command of English reflects this.
Neither show was produced by U.S. television. Neither show was produced by a commercial tv network. Do you suppose there is a connection?

Webservices ? Data Formats ?
Ever thought of offering alternative data access services other than HTML ?
examples of other successful community driven sites such as IMDB can be queried via email (in a structured way) and a huge number of applications are now built upon these capabilities alone, ever thought of offering up the data in alternative formats (XML/SOAP/TELNET/TXT etc etc) so clever programmers can create applications that could utilise the data in new and interesting ways ?

Is this an issue of proportionality?Disclaimer: I'm not a hippie. I do believe in all that "save the environment" tree hugging BS, but I don't think issues like these are as simple as people would like to believe.
It's kind of weird seeing this article on
/. considering that I just watched "The fog of war" on the weekend. I highly reccommend everyone watch it.Anyway, the movie is 11 lessons from Robert S. McNamara. He was the secretary of defence for Kennedy, and was there for the cuban missle crisis. He also participated in fire bombing japan during WWII. It's interesting wisdom right from the horse's mouth.
One of the interesting lessons he has is that "There must be proportionality to war". In one night they had killed 100,000 people by firebombing bombing Tokyo. He addmitted that if the U.S. had lost WWII, he would have been charged and convicted of war crimes. Well, they then went on to firbomb 66 other japanese cities. In the end of it, they had killed more japanese civilians then the atomic bombs.
So after watching the movie. I was trying to figure out more depth to this lesson. As you point out they could have saved lives by killing hundreds (millions?) of thousands of people. It could easily be millions, remember 1 attack on Tokyo killed 100,000 people. With 66 more attacks, they could have reached the million people mark. I think his point is that if you're willing to drop a massive bomb and kill a shit load of people, you better be ready to have it done to you. It's the basis of Mutually Assured Destruction. If you kill a shit load of people you actually raise the bar of acceptable behavior in war.
So if it was acceptable to drop the bomb and firebomb japan. Would it have been acceptable to that being done to the U.S.?
