Old News...Tom Selleck already knew about it
Tom Selleck Already Knew how to handle those in the 80's.. who remembers the movie Runaway ? the bad guy literally had bullets with your name written on. and those spiders
... OMG... I had nightmares with those... I was 6 when I first watched this movie...
and it is a movie by Michael Crichton ! he is a genius... -
Re:Like any other technology, this could be abused
I thought the same thing when I read this... perhaps even more sinister... using RFIDs. Shoot anyone in possession of XYZ RFID and on impact and verification release a nerve agent or other nasty. The next nasty level of sophistication will be a DNA verification? If DNA =X then KILL. How long until we get those nifty hunter/ killer bullets we saw in Runaway? s/paranoia/righteous fear of rising police states/

Did anyone else like Chicken Run?
I thought I'd give a quick plug for the screenwriter. I saw Chicken Run and I thought it was a good movie.
I've also included the obligatory imdb link.

Re:I have just one question.
"Is anyone else here thinking of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"?"
No, I was thinking more of Runaway (1984), an old Michael Crichton film starring Tom Selleck. The bad guy had a gun that recorded the IR signature of the target when it fired. The bullets would then track you round corners etc. - even through crowds.
I remember it as a pretty fun film to watch - esp. the small spider robots with the poison syringes... -
Re:Worrying extracts
Anyone think of even one music video director who has gone on to make a successful full length feature? I can't.
David Fincher? Michel Gondry?
-
However...
You make a very good point however there have been cases where a book has been turned into something very very...very bad when made into a movie.
I personally think that everyone involved in making "The Cat in the Hat" should be flogged. Granted these "books" were never really the type that should grace the big screen but it is a case in point about how wrong something can go.
Of course it's out of our hands as the last time Hollywood listened to anyone was...well never so the best we can do is hope and vote with your dollars. If the movie stinks don't pay to see it! (Nasty catch-22 there as the only true way to see if something is bad is to see it but I'm sure a few slashdotters will chime in when that time comes so that we might get some sort of idea as to it's quality.) -

GNAA Announces Victory over AOLGNAA Announces Victory over AOL
Monday, May 17 2004, GNAA, Nigeria"Who is the Greatest Man Alive?" - If you ask Gary Niger, he'll tell you it is most definitely Osama Bin Laden.
The Gay Nigger Association of America (GNAA) announced today further victory in their current program to bring about total breakdown of the AOL customer relation system.
AOL Corporate Policy has been changed after GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) special operative Gary Niger's constant abuse of their "secret question" program designed to provide a futile illusion of security for the mongoloids and sodomites that comprise their customer base.
The "custom question" option, allowing users to create their own question, has been removed following the efforts of Niger and other fearsome Gay Niggers from the GNAA's top secret "Black Ops" divison.
With the removal of this option, trolls are now forced to use pre-approved AOL "secret question" options when signing up for fraudlent accounts for the purpose of downloading gay pornography and meeting up with the clandestine "homo thug" underground.
"I don't know why it changed, exactly. Corporate HQ didn't tell us," said Tracy, an AOL representative. "It happened two or three days ago."
Tracy was unavailable for further comment, as she was masturbating furiously under her desk - claiming that "Ten guys were on the phone and (she) had to take them all on."
An AOL executive, speaking under the condition of anonymnity, said the change in policy came after widespread employee unrest, culminating in an incident of mass sodomy taking place in the Ogden, Utah call center.
Gary Niger and other members of the GNAA "Black Ops" division continue to use the "custom question" trolling technique with various punjabis in the Bangalore, India call center - who haven't gotten the memo yet.
Meanwhile, GNAA Command is working on the creation of new methods of trolling to work within the confines of this new standard, still flush with victory.
Nick Berg's head was unavailable for comment at the time of this release.

Whoa.. look at the castSo I went and did the IMdB like everyone else and after checking Mr. Kirkpatrick's credentials, I looked at the slated cast for the H2G2 movie... some interesting choices...
Arthur Dent = Martin Freeman ("Tim" from The Office)
Ford Prefect = Mos Def (weird, but I could see it)
Warwick Davis = Marvin (?!? uh, Willow?? is Marvin short, I can't remember)
Humma Kavula = John Malkovich (say no more)
Zaphod Beeblebrox = Sam Rockwell (right on!)I have hope.

uh....You overlooked the crucial part of the quote:
"Computer games in 2034 are likely to offer simulated worlds and interactive storytelling that's more engaging than linear presentations such as those in most movies today "
Even some of today's primitive games have most movies beat... (watching Hollywood eat it's young at a prodigious rate, I sometimes think "Tetris" is more complex, multifaceted and emotional storytelling.)

Re:So...Dear god that had to be the worst star trek episode, EVER.
I don't know if it's as bad as "And the Children Shall Lead," but the Nazi alien made me bust out laughing. (It comes to mind that putting a spoiler warning on this message would be so redundant.)
Thank the Gray Ghost of Gauss that SpikeTV is showing "Deep Space Nine." It is becoming my favorite Trek series -- as much as I wanted to hate it as a "Babylon 5" rip-off, it won me over.
Maybe "Enterprise" is going to do something very great and cool with the Nazi aliens. Maybe they will borrow some old "Hogan's Heroes" plots. What's Arlene Martel up to lately?
Either that, or it will go down in infamy, drummed out of canon like the awful "Galactica 1980."

Re:That movie looks so awful
Highlander 2 was seriously godawful.
But I suggest you two look into a stunning little number called:
Hot Dog... the movie
also, from the same maker:
Hamburger... the motion picture
You might feel that H2 is still worse than both of these movies, but I would suggest this is due to feelings of being let down after the awesome first movie. -

Re:GoodGNAA Press release:
GNAA claims responsibility for kidnap of Olsen Twins
By Gary Niger
Lindon, Utah - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was
responsible for kidnapping the twins inside a popular New York Club, Vudu Lounge (Websites).
In a shocking announcement this afternoon, GNAA representative rkz revealed that he was the mistery gunman who penetrated high-security defenses of the Vudu Lounge and injected viral gay nigger seed deep inside the Olsen Twins, was indeed a full-time GNAA member.
"This is serious," rkz began. This is a first event of such magnitude since GNAA opened its doors to new members in 1996.
Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website,
slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right
into human females, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA collecting penis into their tight little vaginas came right between the consideration of Justin Timberlake to buy out
the entire early saturday morning disney entertainment show's cast, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers
working for Timberlake with the gay niggers developing Mac OS X kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting
our next plans to penetrate "backdoors" into the next favorite teen pop star Kelly Osborne.

Re:Current and future telescopes.
Development of technology is amazing. I read somewhere a long time ago about and engineer (I think) who said his mother (I think) was afraid that we will lose control over the computers in a near future. His reponse was that this was very unlikely to happen, but he did believe that we already have lost control over development and technology advancements. Along those lines - how long until we have a telescope that can see far out/back enough that we can "see" the events even closer to da big boom?

Re:The Day After....Tomorrowre: The Day After....Tomorrow
The title of the movie (The Day After Tomorrow) struck me as strangely similar to that of The Day After, a TV movie released in 1983 which highlighted the Doomsday consequences of nuclear war. Both movies appear to be highly politicized, anti-GOP movies timed (more or less) to coincide with the election cycle.
The Day After aired in late 1983. It didn't coincide with an election cycle; it coincided with the planned deployment of nuclear armed missiles in Europe (Pershing 2, IIRC).
It was implied -- via a news report in the movie -- that that the Soviets invaded Germany to take the missiles out, which is what started the war.
As for the politicalization of The Day After Tomorrow, see http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A28338-20 04May14?language=printer -

"The Day After Tomorrow"Any resemblence between TDAT and our planet is that the place names is/are similar and they speak roughly the same language. The lack of the same physical laws (i.e., 2nd law of thermo) differentiates their reality from ours.
See also other alternate reality movies, where our laws of space and time simply do not apply.

Re:The Day After....Tomorrow
FWIW, The Day After had a realistic representation of the effects of nuclear war.
Not really-- it was made just before the "nuclear winter" theory was developed, so it shows a bright if not sunny day not long after the war (when the farmer's daughter freaks out and runs outside, chased by Steve Guttenberg).
If you want to see the most realistic representation (IMHO) of the effects of nuclear war, find a copy of Threads. Threads makes The Day After look like a sitcom. I caught it when PBS broadcast it back in '85, when I was 12 or 13, and it really stuck with me. I haven't seen it again since, but some of the scenes still make me shudder a little even now when they cross my mind. For those of you reading this who have seen it, three words: melting milk bottles.

The Day After....Tomorrow
The title of the movie (The Day After Tomorrow) struck me as strangely similar to that of The Day After, a TV movie released in 1983 which highlighted the Doomsday consequences of nuclear war. Both movies appear to be highly politicized, anti-GOP movies timed (more or less) to coincide with the election cycle. Naming the new movie "The Day After Tomorrow" struck me as an obvious play on the original "The Day After". It just seemed too close to it to be an accident.
FWIW, The Day After had a realistic representation of the effects of nuclear war. Too bad the current The Day After Tomorrow seems to be according to many accounts just a modified, updated Poseidon Adventure or Towering Inferno. To some extent that undercuts my theory that there may be political motivation behind this, but the less realistic it is, the less effective it is, and it becomes just a fantasy type movie. Unfortunately, people often take fantasy (i.e. "JFK") and turn it into their reality because they are too intellectually lazy to find out whether something on the big screen has any basis in reality. Too many people just guzzle the shit that the media pumps out to them without questioning any of it. That goes for for left, right, and plain old profit-seeking media alike.
I'm feeling cynical this morning for some reason. Please excuse my negativity and have yourself a really nice day. Maybe it'll offset the negative karma I'm giving off this morning.

Re:Doubt it'll happen...Too right it won't happen! I hadn't even gotten a quarter of the way through the article before scenes from 'Fight Club' came to mind...
Narrator: So when the snoody cat, and the courageous dog, with the celebrity voices meet for the first time in reel three, that's when you'll catch a flash of Tyler's contribution to the film.
[the audience is watching the film, the pornography flashes for a split second]
Narrator: Nobody knows that they saw it, but they did...
Tyler Durden: A nice, big, cock...
[several audience members look rattled, a little girl is crying]
Narrator: Even a hummingbird couldn't catch Tyler at work.IMDB THAT is why they'll render their own frames, thanks very much

It's the story stupid!
I keep hearing and reading all these news stories about how traditional 2D animation is dead, about how Disney is only doing CG animation from now on. I'm amazed at how ignorant these bean counters and suits are: it's not about the technique that produces these films, it's all about the story and the characters.
The animation in "The Lion King" isn't too different than what we saw in "Snow White" almost 60 years earlier. It was the story and the characters that made the movie (and the other Disney classics from the early 1990s) such a great hit and instant classic.
I think that Pixar should surprise everyone and come out with a traditional 2D cell movie and show just how brilliant their storytelling really is. That way the public and media will get over how computer animation alone will make blockbusters.

Re:Because consumers can't handle them.Ok, now THAT was a great joke. Mod parent up as funny!
Yes, it was. But, it wasn't original. It's a variation on one from Back to the Future:
"I'm sure in 1985, plutonium is available at every corner drugstore, but in 1955 it's a little hard to come by."

Salvage
I know what their fist ship should be named: The Vulture, after the old TV show, Salvage, about a junk yard owner whe builds a ship to salvage moon-junk. His ship, The Vulture, used low-acceleration to allow him to use safer fuels. Neat idea, although the writers got a tad carried away with the possibilities after a few shows.

Re:Why Final Fantasy failed. While I appreciate what you're saying, I have to disagree, at least to some extent. The reason being Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles. This was an animated series that went for a realistic look. No, it wasn't at the level of Final Fantasy, but they also had a far smaller budget and far tighter timeline. Even still, some of the shots were pretty impressive (though the large bodies of water stunk most of the time, however some of the water effects (splooshes and such, but not the wakes) were quite nice).
This didn't have a GI Joe type plot, it was serious, and had serious plotlines. When characters died, they weren't forgotten in the next episode... it would shake the troops up and they would remember said character(s). I personally loved the series for its visual elements, but even moreso for its plot.
I think the problem with FF was not so much the fact that it was a serious plot in an animation, but simply that it was a plot that didn't particularly interest people, plain and simple. I'm sure the same plot wouldn't have worked so well even if it were live action.
My two cents.
-
Real Human Animation?
Have we all forgotten this movie? I really wish it would of done better, imagine what they would be working on now if they didn't go under..
