Phelps Clan Tweets Intent To Picket Jobs Funeral Via iPhone 396
There's an app for that: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0292625/

Re:Her Defense Was Pretty Good Too
There's more to it than just money. These people don't represent a religion, they represent a cult. This movie offers a chilling look into the inner workings of the WBC which, it turns out, is pretty much just the Phelps family. I don't doubt that Fred Phelps loves to sue the pants off someone, but the money is only necessary to fuel his hatred. Something has to pay for travel and lodging to go protest soldiers' funerals, and its not like these people have day jobs. Having seen Phelps in his home life, and hearing from his children -- including those who've abandoned him -- it's not greed that drives him. It's psychopathy.

I hear ya. I was driving along, one day, and my iPod, plugged into the Hyundai-provided connector, made my car swerve off the road, run over a puppy, and chase down some joggers before I was able to disconnect it. I swear, it was just like "Killdozer" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071717/

Re:Babylon 5 quote
I believe the point of the post was to be wrong about every single detail.
The quote is modified from Star Wars.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/quotesI felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
One of the most iconic quotes from the whole series of movies. It is amazing that it wooshed over your head.

Re:Not surprised
The scary thing is... Leonard Nimoy was in the original Transformers movie. No, not that one, I mean the one from the 1980s. Leonard Nimoy voiced Galvatron in it.

Re:Not surprised
Nimoy is still a youngster compared to Kirk Douglas.
And I think that he's very much part of what made the TOS a great success. (How many other TV series from that time period can you name? I can only think of The Addams Family)
In great success - count the influence it has had as well as number of viewers over time for the show.

Re:As an Australian and an Author...
That's what I'm trying to say here. You can either spend, say, 15 minutes torrenting or take a few clicks to get the thing through the Kindle store (when it's up there). What you're buying is those extra few minutes, and spending a couple of bucks to do so.
Not that I necessarily disagree with you but your reasoning is based on an idea that it somehow takes longer time to get something through piratebay than through Kindle store. By searching for the title and sorting by number of seeders you will get a crowdsourced sorting that places the good torrents at the top, this way you find torrents quicker than you can find the equivalent thing on Kindle store.
The only time this doesn't work is when you want obscure stuff that no store in the world would carry, then you might have to pick something as far down as the tenth result. (If you want to find stuff like The Battle for the Heavy Water torrent sites are pretty much your only alternative since the movie only has a historic value and not a commercial one and we have to rely on enthusiasts to preserve that kind of work for future generations.) -
Re:Which movie?
Hrm... I should have RTFA, the film was Kill the Irishman
I don't recall the film being released down here, though if it was, it was only a very small number of screens. Chances are it's yet another example of Aussies downloading content not yet available in this market because Hollywood still thinks it's a good idea to do regional staggered releases in these days of digital 'prints'.
-
How long will *your* refrigerator door last?
My mom still has one of those plaster castings of a handprint one of us did in kindergarten sitting in one of her cabinets. I'm not sure we know who, unless the teacher wrote our name on the back
:-)Meanwhile, if you ever get another chance to see the movie Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3D, absolutely go see it. Werner Herzog took a camera crew into the oldest known painted cave in France for a couple of days, and it really did need to be filmed in 3D.

Can you turn it on and off like Superman?
Superman can see even beyond the ultraviolet, into the x-ray spectrum, but only when he wants to. Me, I've been trying like heck to shut off my ability to see blue, primarily during Redskins/Cowboys football games, but I haven't yet gotten it to work. So I was thinking, maybe the shorter wavelengths are what allow voluntary control. Please let us know what you discover.
In related news for nerds, here's a B movie about a guy who wanted to see more outside the normal-human spectrum, but without the ability to turn it off: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057693/ -
We now have...
A book, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Game_of_Thrones
a HBO tv series http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0944947/
and a game.. http://www.agot-genesis.com/
Book 5 recently came out (august I think), it's book 5 of 7, 2 are not written yet with agot being the 1st book.
Just thought i'd recap a bit, I wish there was more than books for the other 4, as they do progress the story line quite nicely (I have yet to read 5 though).

Re:Bill Nye is an evil doppleganger
The only true TV scientist is Beakman.
I'm going to assume you just aren't aware of Mr. Wizard because he's old. His show started before my time, black & white in the 50s and 60s. But Nickelodean brought it back as Mr. Wizard's World in the 80s, so I know he qualifies as a true TV scientist.

Bill Nye is an evil doppleganger
The only true TV scientist is Beakman. Bill Nye is a Beakman wannabe, 100000x less interesting. But Bill had the backing and so Beakman was lost to us all.

Re:What kind of a deal did they negotiate?
Sure must suck having a job that:
-pays above minimum wage
-has benefits
-helps keep the cost of goods from rising insanely
-is damned efficient at what it doesMind you - I'm not going to disagree that there are some socio-economic issues with how walmart does business - but they aren't the only ones playing that game and they're not 100% evil. If you're a business owner - you're pretty much guaranteed to do very well if you can get in the same shopping center as a walmart as long as you're not in the business of selling the same goods walmart does for the same demographics. I've seen cities blossom around such shopping centers and a large portion of the stores nearby have been there for years as a result.
I like that the benefits are based on qualifying for foodstamps and medicaid, but at least they're semi-provided by Walmart because they train employees to sign up for and use those services. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473107/

Re:Tax planning and rich people
Warren Buffet's whole article was disingeuous. He knew full well that most people would not notice the fact that in order for the tax code to be changed to increase his taxes to close to the same percentage as the middle class, it would require changing the capital gains tax rate, yet most people would think of it in terms of the income tax rate.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man[1]. Warren Buffett's conclusion doesn't mince words:
But for those making more than $1 million — there were 236,883 such households in 2009 — I would raise rates immediately on taxable income in excess of $1 million, including, of course, dividends and capital gains. And for those who make $10 million or more — there were 8,274 in 2009 — I would suggest an additional increase in rate.
(emphasis mine). If he intended to hide the "loophole" of long-term capital gains, he could have just deleted the statement in bold and gone on his merry way.

Re:UGH
ow many people would be up in arms if some stupid studio "creative" executive started adding cgi to Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds, or The Day the Earth Stood Still just to please a modern audience ?
They redid the "The Day the Earth Stood Still's" CGI not too long ago. But for some reason they made Michael Rennie look like Keanu Reeves. I wasn't up in arms, but was a definite why did they waste money on this? Seemed like a lot of work for very little benefit. They should of just left it like it was.

Re:HFT is a problem
It's a genuine miracle that we don't see more flash crashes and >$1B fails than we do. HFT is going ot destroy the market, but only for actual humans. One day, when we realize that 70% of the market volume is HFT, we will then understand that the NYSE in particular is a house of cards. Then what?

Re:Which aspect ratio?
Filming in 35mm doesn't necessarily mean it was widescreen. The "native" format for 35mm is 4:3.
According to IMDB, it was shot with spherical lenses in 35mm, which suggests that it was NOT filmed in any sort of widescreen process. (It could have been, but they would then be throwing away a significant part of the image at the time just to make it look better in some hypothetical future version.)

Re:How about a boycott?
Oh goodie! A call for a boycott - because those work so well when there's still millions who won't join in on said boycott
:D /sarcasmLet's give it a shot, though...
Starting with the production companies...
Voltage Pictures - not much to boycott there.
Grosvenor Park - no watching "Love in the Time of Cholera", "Disaster Movie" (no loss there) or "Righteous Kill"
Film Capital Europe Funds - again, not much to boycott.
First Light Production - no "K-19 The Widowmaker"
Kingsgate - zilchOhhhh... this one should get some teenage girls going "omg I have to boycott them!? noooooooeees":
Summit Entertainment - That's right, no more watching the "Twilight" saga, the "Step Up" series, "Push", "Knowing" (ot: great opening sequence), "The Brothers Grimm", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", "Memento", "Vanilla Sky",I guess we'll leave the distribution companies be, but just for kicks, they include Warner Brothers Pictures, Lionsgate Home Entertainment, Summit Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Including them, and the other distributions, means you can now put more than half of the movies made, EVER, on your boycott list. That shouldn't be too hard, eh.
Oh, another good one..
Effects: Company 3 - They have worked on, among other, "Tower Heist", "Conan the Barbarian" but also the "Transformers" series, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, "X-Men: The Last Stand", "Sucker Punch", "Rango"... shit, they go all the way back to "Being John Malkovich". That's 202 more movies - many of which quite popular - that you can add to your boycott list. And we haven't even gotten to the fact that you want the crew to be included. You do realize that eventually, it's entirely likely that you will have put, say, 95% of all movies out of Hollywood - and whatever bunch more that the distributors and investment companies etc. touch outside of Hollywood - on your boycott list, right?
Yes, the real power is in the consumer. The question however is not whether the consumer has the power to bring down corporations; that power is a given. The question is whether that consumer has the power to stop themselves from enjoying entertainment just because somebody on Slashdot is entirely deluded on the feasibility of boycotts in general, and especially those scoped as large as you just have.
If you just want to boycott the studio that's actually doing the suing, rather than some make-up artist who would give you puzzling looks as to what the hell you're on, then boycott Voltage Pictures.
But, again, there's just not much to boycott there, even though I guess their list is growing:
