You can Sudo under Windows 7
It's called RunAs. More information is available at: http://www.intelliadmin.com/index.php/2007/09/elevate-processes-from-the-command-prompt-in-vista/
You can also right click on any application/executable icon and select "Run As..." (XP) or Run As Administrator (7/Vista.) You can also although this is a bad idea elevate the entire command prompt.

Message store size limits?
One of the most wonderful things about Exchange is how they artificially limit the size of the message store in order to get you to buy the "enterprise" version.
Why pay megabucks for that limitation when others give you 256 TB or more? -

Re:Pretty serious
MS08-067 is an RPC vulnerability, and is indeed linked to in the summary as of the most recent update. However, the summary also states that it is an SMB vulnerability, which is MS08-063. I think one of the updates in the summary is talking about the wrong vulnerability, since they really aren't that similar. It appears from this article, though, that they are actually releasing the emergency patch for the SMB exploit in MS08-063, not the RPC vulnerability.

Re:SP3
I'm much more interested in WinXP SP3 or Win2k SP5...
Win2k SP5 will never happen because MS wants people to think that Win2k is obselete abadonware, even though they've promised to support it until summer of 2010. They refused, for instance, to make a public patch for Win2k's Daylight Saving rules. I doubt they'll even do another post-SP4 patch rollup -- probably just the same trickle of IE6 and DirectX patches we've seen for the last couple of years.
(Of course, you can make your own SP5 and use third party time zone updates. There will probably be a lot of third-party patching as MS continues to drop the ball, pushing the new shiny stuff instead.)
-
Re:So there are no time based security attacks? The daylight savings patch you posted is more work than is required. Here is a link to one that works on NT-2003 and requires but a single click.Oh,and they have one for 9X that does the same.http://www.intelliadmin.com/Downloads.htm. Look under freeware downloads
That said, being a fan of Debian based OSs,I'm wondering why they are doing this. Does this patch cause crashes? System instability? If not it seems a disservice to their NZ users not to have it in their standard repository.

Re:YRO??!!
Yep. Running "apt-get update; apt-get -y upgrade" or "yum -y update" is a near impossible task.
If you're stuck running Windows (I unfortunately have to admin several hundred xp boxes), downloading the fix adding "\\server.dom\dstfix\DaylightSavingFix.exe /qinstall" to a logon script or update script is also near impossible.
How could anyone manage to do something so incredibly complex? -
Re:But...but..
If you still had a Windows 2000 server on your network you had to either buy new software and give microsoft your money or pay $4000 to buy the DST hotfixes.
Or alternatively, Win 2K users could download and run this Free Patch.
(Also works with XP.) -
IntellAdmin blew it with their DST fix
Remember IntellAdmin, offering a free DST patch for Windows 2000? Well, it doesn't work. I installed it on a Win2K system, and the time didn't change to DST. I contacted Intelladmin, and got "workaround instructions" (open clock, change to another time zone, change back, then reset the clock to the correct time.). It only changes to DST the next time you manually set the clock.
So if you deployed this "patch" on your Win2K machines in a corporate environment, the time is going to be wrong when everybody shows up on Monday.
-
FREE UpdateYou know that M$ is totally ripping you off when you can go to www.IntelliAdmin.com and get a FREE patch. I've used their patches in the past and often times they are a LOT cleaner and easier to use than those from the GREEDY M$.
Always worth a try!

You can either use tzedit from Microsoft or the unofficial IntelliAdmin patch. I used IntelliAdmin, no poking about necessary.

Re:Not such a big deal
We have literally hundreds of servers running Windows 2000, and this DST patch was a major headache. As the parent noted, Microsoft did not include Win2K in their publicly released update.
There is a freeware utility to apply the DST patch on Win2K machines here (as a bonus, it also supports WinNT).
Note that you may also need to update the Java JRE/JDK. -
One Blogger's FUDI found the blogger's 5 Sins of Vista mostly FUD.
One other bone I have to pick with the new browsing interface is the difficulty in going back to the parent of the current directory. The new way makes going back up a few folders a much longer process. Simply stated there is no one button that will always bring you back up to the parent.
It is very easy to go back to the parent. Simply click on the parent folder in the breadcrumb. Or, you can use alt+up arrow on the keyboard. Or, if the parent was the last directory you were in you can alt+back arrow on the keyboard. There are probably others.
When I first started using the new start menu I loved it. I usually have 100s of programs installed, and the new interface makes it much easier to navigate. But there is something also I do with the run command on the start menu.
If I want a specific folder to launch in explorer I just type it out. Click start, then run and type c: Press enter, and the folder will show up.
Not anymore. If you forget the trailing backslash it will launch a program that is the closest match to that word. So for me, when I type c: It launches Remote Desktop! Argg! I must still make this mistake about 10 times a day. It would be so easy for them to check and see if the folder exists before launching an application
Dumb ass. Either a) Put a freaking trailing backslash on the c: from the search textbox or b) Go to the start button properties menu and reenable the run command on the start menu and it will act just like it did in XP.
need to go into networking options often when going from place to place with my laptop. Since some places need a static IP, others need dynamic, etc. When I go into windows networking I am greeted with this.
Look at all of the options I am given here. If you have never used Vista before - Quick tell me how to change the IP address on my wireless card!
How 'bout clicking on "manage network connections" and it's the same as it was in XP. Was that quick enough?
Now when I want a simple search for any file that contains the string 'IntelliAdmin' I can't do it. Instead of fixing what they broke in XP SP2, they just took it out! I want a simple search program that will search for a file on my hard drive (Hint to Microsoft - Every file, not just the types you know about like Word and Excel files) that contains a specific string of letters. It can't be done any more with windows search.
Two options. If a search returns no results, you will see an option to "search within files". Or, alternately, if you want to always use this option, go to (gasp!) options and choose "always search file names and contents". Dumb ass.
I absolutely hate it when my 5000 file copy gets killed half way through because 1 single file can't be opened.
Which is why in Vista all file copy problems are moved to the end of the queue and will not display any dialog until all the copyable files have been copied.
Hooray for the FUD which, despite being nearly 100% wrong still gets 3211 diggs. Now, everyone say "baaaaaaah!" and follow the sheep in front of you.

Re:Seriously?
No, it's a combination of him being dumb and the interface being admittedly unintuitive. If you look at the left side of the picture there's a button that says "Folders"
... what do you think that does... You only have to click it once, and you can slide it to hide your favorites if you want. http://www.intelliadmin.com/images/Windows%20File% 20Browsing%20Is%20Broken.jpg -
doesn't affect my Vista machine ..
What exactly is misleading about the post. Is there *not* a zero day bug in Windows Media player. Does it not relate to WMVCORE.DLL.
"Doesn't affect my Vista machine. Nor my XP Pro machine running IE7 + WMP 11"
What version of WMVCORE.DLL does WMP 11 use and is there a security advisory saying XP is not affected.
""the function at 7D7A8F27 in WMVCORE.DLL version 9.0.0.3250, and at 086E586E in WMVCORE.DLL version 10.0.0.3802"
""I can't help but wonder what it might look like if every time a flaw was discovered in *Nix, and a security advisory .. were released, and slashdotted"
Slashdot has been known to mention bugs in Linux.
"How often does a kernel update in Linux break something that you now have to update, or sometimes roll back alltogether because they won't work"
It doesn't as you aren't forced to update the kernel. Even if you do you can have multiple versions. The same with the apps. And you would never do a major upgrade on a production machine.

The Microsoft statement is behind the other link
Don't get me wrong, I think PatchGuard probably has more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese... but the submitter's text needs redacting, and the original article could do with an -actual- statement from Microsoft.
Perhaps this link was added to the slashdot summary after you posted your comment for all I know, but the slashdot summary that I read had two links, and I found that statement quite clearly after following the first link. About the 13th paragraph down in that article states, complete with the additional link that I've included here:
Microsoft immediately responded with a angry attack stating that that the hack harmed windows users by reducing the security of Windows.
So no points for grammar in that sentance (which I copied verbatim), but it seems to explain quite clearly what the Microsoft criticism is. That second linked article begins with the paragraph:
Microsoft officials say they are unhappy that security software maker Authentium has decided to bypass the controversial PatchGuard kernel protection feature in its next-generation Vista operating system, and said that the tactic could lead to eventual problems for users of the company's software.
...and goes on for quite a while. Is this the statement you meant?

Obligitory Monkey Joke
A guy walks into a bar with a monkey and orders a drink for himself. The bartender looks at the monkey and says to the guy, "Hey, we have health standards here, get that monkey out of here!" "Aw," says the guy, "He's Okay. I'll pay for any damages that he makes." Ill at ease, the bartender agrees. After a few minutes, the monkey jumps from the bar over to the pool table, grabs the cue ball and swallows it. "That's it!" the bartender screams, "Get that monkey out of here!" "Hey," says the guy, "it's Okay. Look, I'll pay you for the cue ball and leave." The guy drops a bill on the bar, gathers his monkey and leaves. Two weeks later, the same guy with the same monkey show up at the same bar. The bartender, remembering the incident, says, "Listen buddy, are you going to keep your monkey in line?" "Yeah," says the guy, "don't worry about any cue balls." After a few minutes the monkey runs across the bar to a bowl of grapes and grabs one. He looks at the grape for a minute or two and promply shoves it up his rear end. Sitting there for a while, he then proceeds to eat the grapes one by one. "That has to be the grossest thing I ever saw in my life," says the bartender. "Yeah," says the guy, "but after the cue ball, he began to size everything he eats."

1000 Records is a really small number
Not that I think this program is good, but they only collected 1000 records for analysis. According to the article there are over 14 *million* student loans each year. I would say that this is a very small fraction of the student population.

Intel will beat down AMD
I think Intel is going to make a comeback and crush AMD. Here is why I think that: Imagine a world where Apple is pushing more boxes then Dell and all of them have an Intel Chip inside. They are only hurting right now because of the tiff they had with MS over their new 64 bit design. Developers did not like it since it had a totally different instruction set. With all the trouble with their new chips MS decided to put their full force behind AMD, and Intel suffered. It is too bad that such a large number of people are going to be out of work now
:(
I am sure the top echelon of Intel will take massive pay cuts also...yea right...they will get multimillion bonuses for firing so many people.

Media companies are ruining innovation
This is another example of the media companies dictating what the consumer can purchase in the marketplace. They have been hampering innovation since the beginning of time. If it were up to media companies we wouldn't even been able to purchase a tape recorder back in the seventies, a VCR in the eighties, and an MP3 player in the 90s, and now they are doing the same with HD in the 00s. I bet Linux will step up to the plate and be able to play HD.

Big brother here we come!
Wow. This is really big brother. Essentially they put these on top of cop cars an the thing just starts searching 360 for license plates and drops them in the system. The trick would be to have enough police cars fitted with them to give back good data. Also it would not help track the car if it were in someone's garage.
Good Excerpt from the article:
LPR cameras, which are usually around the size of a can of tomato sauce, can be mounted on police cruisers and powered by cigarette lighters. As the car moves, the camera bounces infrared light off other vehicles' license plates. The camera reads the plates and feeds them to a laptop in real time, where information from an FBI or local database can tell an officer if the car is hot. Some systems can read up to 60 plates per second, and they work at highway speeds and acute angles.

Re:He is not a programmer's programmer
A programmers programmer knows how to create programs that are easy to use, and easy to support. They don't crash all the time, and break everything when you upgrade to a new version. Lotus notes makes windows look like it is the best software ever made. I have been a developer for over 20 years, and just because I do support also doesn't mean I don't know what makes a good programmer. Windows Admin Tools

He is not a programmer's programmer
I would totally disagree that he is a programmer's programmer. This is the guy that brought us Lotus Notes, and then a similar product named groove. Have you ever seen any company really using Groove? And on the lotus notes side - what a nightmare. I can't even think about that software without getting the shakes. The number of problems and issues I had when I was supporting it was crazy. On top of it all the program did not work like any other windows program... Causing tons of newbie headaches. I think Microsoft is in for a rough ride...

No competition = higher prices in the future
These low prices are only to gain market share, and things will change. I think it should cost as much as the consumer is willing to pay - at least that is how it works when you have a properly working capitalist system. But you see, the large telcos and cable companies have co-opted the system, and now are using legislation, and unfair practices to keep any competition from getting into the market. When is the last time you saw a new DSL provider *other* than the phone company? I am really worried that our options are getting smaller, and not larger - thus the prices will go up, and our bandwidth will not increase with the extra cost.
In that same vein, I feel that their next step is to start trying to sand-box their corner of the Internet. That way they control the content too. It is no good as a commodity to them, they want to monetize it to a greater extent. The only way in their eyes it to first keep you from going anywhere else, second make it so their content and services are always faster, and better. Look at what some of them do already with VOIP. When my VOIP provider is choppy, and high latency who do I blame? Most customers are not smart enough and blame the VOIP provider.

It could be worse
It is amazing to me that we have gotten this far without *more* control over the Internet. It is human nature to want to control or stop things you do not agree with. Look at the lengths the Chinese government will go to keep people from speaking their mind. Still, after all of these years, outside of these totalitarian countries I can speak my mind, be heard and not worry that I will see men in black that will carry me away.

Re:This is a tough business
You right that you are not in the same market - Now that I think about it, it really has no weight in the issue. Last year my 5 year old nephew came over for a month. I have zero games, and was not about to put out $50 for some game I would never play again. Found a very cool indy game that he and I played for weeks - only cost me $14.95. It was a typical 2D shootm up (Kinda like the games you would see in the old days on the Atari 2600, or Commodor 64), and it was a really fun time.

This is a tough business
I have total respect for any Indy game developer. It is a very tough business to get into. It is so saturated with Hollywood types that are constantly taking a loss on $10 Million game projects. Building a game is such a gamble. Its not like a utility, or p2p app where you can gauge the interest in it - you never know until you release the game what type of response you will get. Sometimes these Indy guys work on a game for years, release it and get nothing back.
