slyck.com?
Slyck.com is also down. Has their plug been pulled or are they experiencing too much traffic to handle?
Getting shut down would be strange since they neither host copyrighted-files nor have links to such material, but with the recent state of affairs I wouldn't be too surprised if they have also been sent a cease-and-decist order. ISONews were also shut down quite some time ago (if anyone remembers), even though they didn't link to any copyrighted material... -
you make their case for idiotsThis post IS WHAT THE MASSES are trying to convince you of. And, as usual, the masses are a bit mindless.
They all missed the paradigm shift. Digital content & easily available media is a disruptive technology. The shift has already happened and it already is the future of music, tv, movies. You can't sue people into going back to the old ways anymore than getting people to not use walkmans or personal computers or to google instead of using a phonebook.
What. The. Fuck. So as long as something can be classified as a "paradigm shift," it's ok? Distributing content illegally is acceptable because it's popular (a shift from the old methods). So anything exceedingly popular is fine? Here's a "paradigm shift" for you; politicians around the world lie, cheat and steal their to way to the top. It works consistently and has become ingrained in every political process, and is studied thoroughly. Is this ok? Should it not be stopped because it's become the standard? Should we just go with the flow and not try to change the system?
"Ask yourself why video game makers have not supoena'ed anyone yet?"
Sure, video game makers have not subpoenaed anyone yet.
Because the DOJ does it for them. -
Access Some Sites - get on the FBI's list!
In the article, there is reference to that poor soul recently nabbed for selling mod chips. Now his domain name is the property of the US Gov't. Check it out.
The article also lists four other sites (drug paraphenalia sites 1 2 3 4) which are blocked by the DEA. Interesting part, click them, now the DEA, FBI whoever knows you checked them out. Disturbing.
So, I made sure I connected to all these links. It would be nice if other people did this too because a high volume of random connects, will essentially make data collection worthless. Anyone know more of these? -
Re:DOJ Press Release on isonews.com
I've asked before, but let me ask again. The isonews.com site features a logo from the original site. Isn't that copyright violation?

Microsoft kills Neowin.net. Didn't we see this before? No, wait, it was the US government. But, really, what's the difference?

Re:Tampering with Evidence
I just went and visited http://www.isonews.com/ and noticed something. They're using an image that used to be part of the site as part of the new site. Am I wrong, or is that infringing on the copyright owned by the creator of that image?
Shouldn't the DOJ now be charged with "conspiracy to violate criminal copyright laws" for using that image without permission?
-
Am I missing something?
This reads:
... illegally imported from the United Kingdom ... The mod chips contained software code ...
If I'm not mistaken aren't mod chips sent with no code at all, I know my Matrix chip was, it was set to FF on every byte.
I can see how it was illegal to import them with code, thanks to DMCA, however if they where without code does this case really stand to hold? -
Irony rules!
http://www.isonews.com/top2.gif looks an aweful lot like something that would automatically fall under copyright by it's designer... I wonder who made it? IF it isn't the owner of the site who plea bargined, there may be a copyrite infringement case against the DoJ!

Re:DOJ doesn't own it
Stealth re-direction through a dynamic dns service? Their site resolves just fine for me, according to this article, it was supposed to be redirected to the doj, hmm?
Now the domain has been linked to the Cybercrime Site warning all pirates all there that modchipping is not a game.

CBR?!
What the hell are you talking about? A random sampling of NFOs on iSONews shows quite a few releases using VBR MP3 soundtracks.
Why on earth would AVIs require a CBR audio stream? Where did you get this idea? I'm really, really curious, here.

Re:FTPed games
The article talks about how Tony Hawk has a special PS2 that will play anything he burns. Game-makers FTP him games, he burns them and plays them as a beta-tester. Do I have to learn how to skateboard to get that job?
No, you just need a mod chip and some warez sitez. -
Re:Format?
I believe he meant that the movie piracy group that ripped Harry Potter from the DVD made it a 2 CD, or a 2 x 700 meg release. You can achieve much higher quality that way, especially for longer movies. I would link directly to the NFO's on isoNEWS, but it is apparently having hardware problems as of now.

ISONews
If it's not listed here. Then I don't believe it. That site is the nearest to perfect "warez released" site on the net. If your a Warez group, you would have posted it there.
And trust me, if you got a full movie 4 months before it's release date, you definately would want to show that you won the "race". -
Re:End of an Era.
When BBSs dissapeared the Warez community became boring
To the uninformed everything is probably "boring". Get a clue. -

Re:Free OSes on the X Box - soon..
As you can see here , there are already XBox games ripped from their Discs into a format readable by Xbox developer boxes and Xboxes with modchips. The modchips are almost out and information about them could be found here.
I am an Xbox owner and I don't think I will be trying to pirate using the XBox because I don't want what happened to the DC happen to the XBox. I'm tired of having good alternatives to the giants (Sony & Nintendo) and them being stomped by the fact that Americans (and others) are more interested in getting something free than supporting developers.
BTW one of the "side effects" of the modchips is that you can run unsigned code. That's how someone would Port *nix or bsd onto it.

to clarify divx misconceptions
first and foremost, bootlegs of this film downloaded off p2p filesharing servies such as kazaa, morpheus, are not what the article is referring to.
the "low quality" argument flooding replies in this thread are dripping with ignorance. an entire underground piracy scene exists, in which movies, music, games, software, console games (even recently XBOX games). in this scene, movie "releases" go through a variety of stages, provided by numerous competing groups, the better of which are rewarded with greater levels of access to sites archiving this media.
first, a "cam" release can be expected, which is what this article is referring to, when some guy takes a PAL handycam into a cinema, sets it up on a tripod, and films the entire thing, before capturing and encoding to VCD (mpeg1). in this underground scene exists standards, for example, "CAM" releases not filmed from a tripod are unacceptable. the next step along the chain is the "TELESYNC", which differs from the "CAM" in that the sound is from a direct source, for example a headphone jack in the projection booth, or an input from a cinema providing hearing-disability servies. "SCREENER" tapes, distributed to reviewers, critics, distribution houses, retailers, the academy, etc are then later captured and released, under the same VCD format. finally, when the film's DVD is available, it is ripped digitally and encoded to SVCD (MPEG2 variable bitrate), and DIVX.
furthermore, groups in the "scene" compete. groups have reputations, alliances, and rivalries, FTF for example, the group responsible for the recent AotC TELESYNC release, has a notorious reputation for mislabelling CAM releases as TELESYNCs.
the 120mb RealMedia files or ASFs that you downloaded off KaZaA are not what the MPAA really needs to worry about.

Re:hmm
Here's a link to the group's NFO file that released it. The only thing of value in it, aside from the usual cast, plot, etc:
SUPPLiER....:[TEAM FTFVCD] SiZE:Cd1:xx/50 CD2:xx/45]
RUNTiME.....:[132 min] FORMAT....:[NTSC VCDTS ]
We are pleased to bring you this early release of One of the most anticipated movies of the summer. We enjoy helping the scene out wherever we can. Haters don't bother us, fans we appreciate. -
Bootleg already out.
Ironic that on the day of this posting, days before release, a Telesync release is already out. May the force be with them?

Re:april
This is almost as bad as the isonews.com story about warez being declared as legal. A little tact, ala The Onion circa 1998, would help immensely with these posts, guys.

TV Shows being pirated
To get an idea of the amount of TV shows being pirated, and the speed at which they get ripped take a look here. -
Trying to download the game, but it is fun!
I tried to download the game, but of course Fileplanet is full, but they would nicely let me download it, if I signed up for thier service. Not today... Ok, lucky BluesNews had a link that worked. 3 hours later I was good to go.
Launched the server, didnt know how to tell it private, so I reduced it to 4 guys. Within 1 minute the server was full. Everyone also just downloaded and I was the only server that had a good ping in Seattle. lol Played for 2 hours, learning, then found a 12 person server, much better.
Likes.. :)
Well, its not quake3 with powerups, you get killed quick. You have to watch yourself, its like more like CounterStrike in that respect. Good GFX, fast game play, the level was just made for deathmatch.
Respawn points are rooms in back, so you dont get spawn killed. That was a MAJOR change to most multiplayer games.
Dislikes:
The only level was kinda small, After getting killed by a damn sniper in a good spot, I switched to rockets, (only get 6 shots) and spamed hit window. Dead. :) Started to play it like quake3a and that was fun for awhile. I finally switched to the machine gun, started to do head shots, and stayed in the hallways. Thats when my points went up, and stopped getting killed. I think the shot gun should be tweaked, up closed dead, farther away, usless. Also taunting the enemy in german was a neat idea.
But all the new games, Serrious Sam 2 beta engine ROCKS. It actually lets you pick the refresh rate, and turn on all the options to make it look freaking awesome. Even plays OGG music files too.
Also, New York Racing came out, its about the movie the 5th element, but a race game with floating cars. Gotta pick that up, the demo was really good. Not alot of news about it, but read one on ISO News -

What's next, busting Razor 1911?
:)
Well, since you mention it.
A few minutes ago, I was reading the forums at isonews. One of the posts seemed to imply that Razor 1911 had been busted.
I was going to point you to the exact post. Now, oddly, isonews is down. Maybe it's just a coincidence . . . -
i don't care
Whatever copy protection they invent, there will always be a workaround...
The movie industry has been thinking so long about an "uncrackable" movie format. They really believed it was secure because otherwise they would have never supported it. Only a few months (I guess) after the release, it was already cracked and DVD-rips are floating on the web everywhere...
If we can crack DVD, why wouldn't we be able to crack this new cd-protection? -

Re:ATTN: Movie Studios, You're a Bit LateIsonews - releases - vcd
I have all those available on FTP before they're even listed, and that's nothing special - a lot of people have that kind of access.
So, while Joe Public can't get them - the parent is correct in that many people with broadband have these kind of sources already.
-
Sounds like Black & WhiteB&W won't run on some win2k installations due to shoddy SafeDisk (which has been cracked for some time, by the way...B&W was released as an ISO and warez rip a couple of months ago already). My advice to people who bought SafeDisk-bugged games and can't return them due to (possibly illegal) anti-consumer return policies is to seek out the pirated versions and grab the crack. It's your right as a consumer to get some use out of what you buy, no matter what the corps try to tell you.

DC Section Back Up!!
I would encourage you all to follow up on this and check the site out again! look for a formal press release sometime soon as well. The dc section is back and isonews will be fighting sega on this case if they choose to file suit. http://www.isonews.com
-
Please, it's not real.
Jesus. Why do people buy into this shit?
Kalisto wanted out, and didn't have a witty thing to say. So they made something up. If you read their previous NFO's they were rather pissed off at the 'scene' and one would easily say they did want out.
Now the issue of Sega giving stock options is ludicrist. Sega would rather hand them some handcuffs rather than money or options. You better believe that sega still wants them in jail.
And finally, if the 'warez site' in question was more up to date, you'd notice a new group has formed (named echelon), right after kalisto has 'exited'. Seems a little suspicious to you, doesn't it?
Finally, here are some links that are comparibly better than the one provided in the story.
Isonews
152.org
You can see the 'nfos' from the new group 'echelon' and give youself a better picture of the dreamcast pirate world.

People are using DeCSS for copying NOWif you check out isonews.com you'll see that there are all sorts of DVD Movies listed available for download in Movie swapping forms... Granted, these are not exact copies.. they are lossy compressed so that they can fit on 1 or 2 regular cdrom.. They are using the new DiVX format (combo of mpg and wmp)... if you check out how they encode all these, the first step is getting DeCSS
As much as I support DeCSS and the ability to reverse engineer things, your argument is not as strong as you think it is...
