I'm surprised that no one has mentioned John Titor when they read this: The site (Disclaimer: I personally think the guy is an incredibly good internet hoaxer, but a lot of what he said is extremely chilling)

Ever heard of John Titor?

He was supposedly a time travelor from 2036 that made his way around a few message boards between Nov 2000 - Mar 2001.

Most people seem to take him as a crock of shit, but many things he predicted are starting to happen. One thing he said:

After the war, the United States had split into five separate regions based on the various factors and military objectives they each had. There was a great deal of anger directed toward the Federal government and a revival of states rights was becoming paramount. However, in their attempt to create an economic form of government, the political and military leaders at the time decided to hold one last Constitutional Congress in order to present a psychological cohesion from the old system.

During this Congress, the leaders discovered and decided that coming up with a new and better form of government was nearly impossible. The original Constitution itself was not the problem it was the ignorance of the people that lived under it.

I don't know whether to believe what he said or not, but I must admit that some of the things he said are definetely plausible. I thought this might interest you because of your comments on wanting to split up the Federal government.

John Titor, a supposed Time Traveller from 2036 predicted in 2000 (before 9/11/01) that the US would undergo massive eradication of civil rights and highhandedness of the government and bad foreign policy - which would eventually lead to an internal war and world war.

The patriot act, DMCA, DRM, HomeSec, Iraq war, are all pointing in the predicted direction.

There seems to be some truth about the Rest of the World's opinion towards the Americans in the present timeline.

Aye. Supposed Time Traveller John Titor's predictions about a US Civil War in 2005 don't look so far fetched....

Seriously, "corruption" is a mild word. Our politicians are actually befriending the bosses of megacorporations that work actively to take away our rights. You rub my back and I'll rub yours.

One almost hopes that John Titor is not a hoax, and that a new civil war followed by a third world war will wipe out this "gentleman's club", and put an end to the inbreeding going on among the powerful, rich and famous, and the politicians.

But soon it will be used for trolling in general for anyone who "does something bad" online.

Let me ask you this:

• Have you ever read or downloaded any of those "survivalist" texts or "handbooks"?
• Have you, for any reason, ever stumbled accross Pr0n with participants of questionable age?
• Have you ever downloaded a krack or SN generator?
• Have you ever checked out those "virus creation programs"?
• Have you ever been pissed about something the "gubmint" did and perhaps "overstated" what you'd like to do about it online?
• Have you ever gotten a virus or malware on you box that started opening websites you never asked for?
• Have you ever [insert anything, which might become illegal in the future] online?

If the Feds were to troll for my "surfing" habits, I'll bet I could be put on a watch list right now. Currently there are things like court orders limiting what can be gleaned and what can be done with the data once collected, but these checks and balances are quickly drying up.

For those who are quick to reach for their tin-foil hats (mine's right here) check out some fun, time-killin' reading. Errosion of privacy is one of his top points...

According to John Titor, a mysterious being that appeared on the internet years ago, claiming that an American civil war is about to happen and the first signs will be appearant during the 2004 election. He said that the war was with the rural areas versus the city areas, and to see where we would be safe from nuclear holocaust we could just look at the map of the 2000 election -- constantly giving hints in his meanings that it's left versus right.

Is it a crazy maniac, a real time travele, or a guy that actually might've hoaxed something that might become a reality? Scary thoughts though.

The link to that site has been posted quite a few times in /.'s discussions. He claimed that he was a Time Traveller from 2036. Among the "predictions" he made back in 2000, was the Black hole research at CERN, the Chinese Man mission, the Iraq war, the Columbia disaster, and most importantly the VAST increase in powers that the US Government gave itself to suppress citizens.

The last one supposedly leads to a US Civil war in 2004. I might have laughed at his posts in 2000, but with these more and more frightening developments, I can't help but wonder.

An interesting read nevertheless.

Time is the only truly finite resource from a human perspective. As technology has progressed, distances have been conquered, vast energies harnessed, but old Father Time is still inescapable.

It seems that at least one person claims to have conquered time.

Maybe this is what started John Titor's War. I can see crap like this starting a civil war. Keep writing vague laws that oppress the people and the people will pick up a shotgun and create thier own laws.

In any case, we don't know if John Titor was a real time traveler from 2036 or not....his postings/messages make a lot of interesting reading though. He "predicted" the development of CERN's blackholes, China's space mission, and more importantly, the American Civil War, which is supposed to start in the next two years (2004-2005) or so.

The primary reason he mentioned was the ever increasing highhandedness of the US government (this was in 1999-early 2000), before Sept 11 happenings/Patriot Act etc.

Anyway, what he said was, that people got tired of the US government monitoring them all the time, passing more and more unjust laws favoring corporate America, and curbing basic freedoms of the people.

True or not, every time another such YRO story comes up on /., it makes me wonder where America is headed.

This guy supposedly was a time traveller who talked (online) extensively with a lot of people. I mean, seriously, where is John Titor when you need him? Why didn't he warn us about how the very technology he spoke so highly about and by which he distorted our timeline and entire worldview would have already been the very tool by which the Enemy (spammers) spread their lies and confusion?

John, come on.. The 1980s can't be all that great, can they?

After the second civil war, we'll be much more worried about the next world war, which will make a mere asteroid crashing into the earth look like a tiny drop in the bucket.

I guess that's how the civil war will start then.
