Thank you for copy-and-pasting, verbatim, this blog entry

Do I hear a second to that motion? -
Screw this, We Want a google internet filesystemI have posted this to my different blogs pleading with the google people to give us a way to store files using gmail or similar tool without using the attachment feature. Support me people. Who cares if google has 2GB free. I can't fill that up? Who cares about RSS features on gmail. I want a place to put my files on the internet without paying for it.

t ml/This petition was created to ask Google to offer services for a network file storage system or other similar internet/network share. Google has made great headway with its very successful multi-gigabyte google email service

Trails Video
Trails has been mentioned earlier as the Java copy of RoR. You will probably find the following video pretty interesting -- it demonstrates how quickly one can develop an application with Trails. It is a part of Chris Nelson's weblog.

record fm radio shows
If there are radio shows you like but the time slot is not convenient, record it to mp3 and listen whenever.
This is what I did and I describe how to do it here

Re:Speaking of Java..anyone know
Well, isn't it obvious why Eclipse and Netbeas suck? Because the BileBlog said so! Sorry, I'm too lazy to find a quote on netbeans.

My comments on the subject...
Here are my comments on this topic, FWIW.

Re:Mono is Wonderful
The best thing about Mono is that it shows just what a monumental screw up Java has been. Java (Sun's version at least) is a veritable HOWNOTTO of virtual machines and class libraries. Also the recent GNOME tests showing how much memory Mono used for apps compared to C/C++ and Java were amazing. Mono was pretty svelt... but Java. Yeeessssh. Everyone has experienced just what a bloated hog Java is... now there are actual figures for it. Astonishing. No wonder people haye it so much.

I agree with the point Linus appeared to be making
Open Source might not exactly be a "career path." But it is, imho, an enabler - something that you can use to launch a business and, hopefully, profit from.
here is what I had to say in response to one comment somebody else made, regarding making money / feeding the family, and open-source.
This IT Managers Journal article, or this book: Innovation Happens Elsewhere : Open Source as Business Strategy are also of interest on this topic, I think. -
I wish I had known....

Re:Is a CS degree a requirement now?
It looks like we're just about to hire an employee who has no college degree. He does, however, have decades of experience in the industry from microcontroller programming to webapp development. He also has a very strong drive to continously learn.
All that said, he will probably get a lesser salary than what he would have, had he obtained an applicable college degree.
On a side note, we're still looking to fill another position or two, so if you think you have what it takes, check out the job description.

HotSpot source code is a bad joke
Before you put too much faith in "unbreakable" JVMs, you should read the comments about Sun's JVM source code on Slava Pestov's Weblog: "HotSpot source code is a bad joke". scary!

Re:ANT...Honestly, I think maven is atrocious.
The Bile Blog has plenty to say about it.
I think Maven may work if you don't mind drinking a bit of kool aid and structuring your project around your build tool, rather than the other way round.

Re:Flaws in both Languages
ad 1.)
I agree totally... also see my Open Source Java FAQ:
http://www.jroller.com/page/murphee/20040426
Where I dismiss similar rumors.
ad 2.)
Kind off weird statements about JITs... Why would Sun avoid writing 1000 differen JITs? All current JVMs feature either JITs or the superior dynamic compilers (which use runtime profiling to be able to generate better optimized code than JITs). Javas bytecode has an additional advantage over the limited MS IL: it *can* be interpreted (one of MS' big marketing arguments is that the MS IL code is optimized for JIT compilation... and they try to sell this as an advantage... of course, totally ignoring the fact that this keeps .NET from being run on constricted environments where JIT compilation is not an option. These environments, though, can easily allow a Java Bytecode interpreter).

try the ACTUAL bile
Why Maven Sucks
The bile you linked is just a reminder so no one forgets that it indeed still sucks. -
A different opinion
Not everyone seems to be fond of Maven. This guy lists both pros and cons with Maven, but lands on the negative side.
I havent used Maven myself, but since this was mostly a very positive announcement, I guess it cant hurt to point to another point of view. -
Maven Great???
Maven may be "neat" to some, but it also has real issues...

Other Free/Open Java blogging software and sites
They are missing SnipSnap, an fantastically easy to install java GPLd blog/wiki server. Try it out at snipsnap.org.
While you're plugging Java based blogging software, don't forget the Roller Weblogger, which runs JRoller and, since the article includes blosxom, people should also be aware of blojsom, which is a Java based clone of blosxom. Naturally, there are others out there too.
P.S. Since the original post didn't provide a direct link, here's one for the home page of SnipSnap. -

Re:huh?
When is the last freaking time you actually paid attntion to and responded to any anoynmous poster in any technical disucssion? This isn't "anonymous coward" style anonymous, it's the creation of a plethora of accounts that have real-sounding names and participate in real conversations (sometimes with themselves.) For more information, refer to Rickard Oberg's blog and Mike Spille's blog. (BTW - Rickard is one of the authors of JBoss.) (Just in case you didn't figure it out from my login, I'm the Cameron Purdy that purportedly co-authored the article with Rickard.) Peace.

Yeah, new Blogger users are not getting GMail invitations, but check Blogger traffic numbers, which show the Google / GMail / Invitation effect, a la Orkut.

Re:The BileBlog has another take on open source Ja
Note that the BileBlog has many, many vicious postings on various Java and open source topics - Maven, XDoclet, "J3EE", etc.
In some cases, though, as they say - "it only hurts because it's true". -
The BileBlog has another take on open source Java...right here. An excerpt:
When the hell will all those people just curl up and die? I'm so heartily sick of that mustachioed hippie free-love deviant ESR spouting his OSS filth. When will he realise that he's made all the money he possibly can from it, and it's time to just shut up and move along now?
You can see why it's called the "BileBlog". -
Re:A guy walks into his coworker's office....
Is boring only when you are doing stable, proven things with it. I can have a little fun sometimes but my customers may not apreciate it.
But judge by yourself, look a small sample of what's coming. How does this compares with perl and how much clearer it seems? less the comments, of course :-) -
Fight the hype
Don't just swallow all the hype. Think twice before bying in to child of marketing that is Java.
Java: Language of Tommorow
Java: Failure or Crime

The only feature that Sun held back was Generics;
the others (for loop, boxing, enums, varargs...) haven't been
discussed before; Some of them were probably influenced by C# (especially auto boxing);

Re:CVS good, ClearCase bad
What would be better? I like this rant on Subversion. Most of the other version control systems don't have a lot of 3rd party support. I like WinCVS, tortoise, Eclipse intergration, ant, etc.

If you install it, it doesn't work, and you don't have time/interest to google for answers, you never become an experienced Linux user. I tend to agree with Hani's view of linux. -
My humble 8086 laptop
Recently I blogged about my ancient 8086 laptop.
Here's the full text, along with some pics.
It still works, and after having written that I even boot it from time to time, just to play some Lemmings. Oh, the memories...
