Slashdot is using censorship! It is trying to eridicate free and open discussion like we know slashdot to be, it has the following RESTRICTIONS in place to Censor you
They claim they don't, but they do, wonder why their are so many trolls, crapflooders and lamers on slashdot, because they are fighting for their rights! Slashdot is trying to silence the trolls. Remove the filters, the trolls get bored, and slashdot will be troll free!- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
- Unnessary posting delays. Hasnt taco learned to touch type? A lot of posts are typed in less than 20 seconds and it is a ANNOYING DELAY! 2 minute ban? Come on, so some are faster then others, big deal, some people have more to say than others
- Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.
- Crapfloods, a meaningless flood of random letters or text, which the lameness filter does a crappy job at trying to stop, besides trolls have written tools using the opensource slashcode to generate crapfloods which bypass the filter
- Links to offensive websites, the most common one is known a http://www.goatse.cx, a awful site which shows a bleeding anus being stretched on the front page. Trolls sneak these links in by posting messages that look legitimate, but infact are sneaky redirects to the site. Common examples include rd.yahoo.com, www.linux-kernel.tk, goatsex.cjb.net, and googles "Im feeling lucky".
- Trying to break slashdot, this is actually a good thing, as it helps test slashdot for bugs. Famous examples include the goatse.cx javascript pop-up, the pagewidening post and the browser crashing post!
But, the issue that concerens us the most, is the COMMENT QUOTA. A discrimatory system that stiffles discussion, cripples the community and will ultimateley destroy slashdot unless it is removed! Annoymous cowards are allowed only 10 posts a day! This is unethical! Users with negative karma only get two! That is DISCRIMINATION! How would you like to only be able to speak once a day, just because of the color of your skin. That would be racism, and slashdot is discrimitating on people just because of a negative number in a database! BOYCOTT SLASHDOT! LET THEM DIE!
We wan't these stupid useless restrictions REMOVED! This comment will be posted again and again until it does!
Inportant imformation for users

Darwin on x86
yes, Darwin is available for x86 platforms. However, you'll miss the great Aqua user interface that comes with OS X. You could run KDE3, which is not as much fun...
-
Re:No I would not.
Plus, don't forget that Ximian's Mono provides an Open Source _alternative_ to Microsoft's
.Net, which means that you can use Mono without paying Microsoft any money, and without being tied to any Microsoft services.
Thus, instead of helping Microsoft, Mono helps _developers_ migrate _away_ from Microsoft.
The Qt# bindings, on the other hand, simply provide support for .Net.
Thus, Qt# helps Microsoft, and that's all it would do, if it weren't for the existance of Mono.
Note that KDE/Konqueror also provides official support for Microsoft's ActiveX protocol through Reaktivate (see http://dot.kde.org/994747675/), thus helping Microsoft to de-commodtize the Internet, by encouraging the use of protocols that can only be accessed through a Microsoft-controlled middle layer. -
Re:No I would not.
As someone has already pointed out, unlike the GNOME C# bindings which are hosted on a third-party site, go-mono.com, Qt# is already included in the main KDE distribution.
-
Here is your solution...Now will someone point me to a decent howto on how to get
.mov, .qt or .mpeg/.avi/MPEG4/Divix :-) to play on my kde desktop? I've tried this in the past and all I ever get are tons of headaches and eventually I just give up.Simple. Once you do this, you will never have to worry about Quicktime ever when using a KDE desktop on your UNIX system.
-
Re:KDE needs this badly
I'm working on an installer, see http://mail.kde.org/~howells/kalypso for some very preliminary screenshots.
Unfortunately the amount of fragmentation in the Linux distro market makes this kind of thing bery difficult to achieve without running your own download server, although hopefully we'll manage with some apt4rpm stuff. (I really need to write an essay on why RPM sucks sometime). -
red-carpet rules...
Red Carpet makes all other package management systems look silly, including rpm, and up2date.
In a world like ours with Joe and Bob trying to unify/standardize their linux (United Linux, LSB), and Fred and Sam trying to stabalize theirs (Debian GNU/Linux), users are left to figure out what might be best, safest, easiest to use.
If your a newbie, do yourself a faver and use Ximian Gnome, red-carpet in particular. I use KDE, but still use red-carpet to keep my system up to date when a new security hole needs patching, or to do cool stuff like install ruby.
There is life beyond apt.
Doesn't my hometown have beatiful girls?

Hey... my mom IS running Linux!
I set up a box for my mom to use. She's a teacher, she types papers, prints them out; occasionally browses the web; and checks email about once a week (now that she can). The box runs Linux.
For awhile, I had her running KDE, but the box was as Celery 400 or so with 128MB of RAM, and KDE 2.x is a dog for performance. So I switched her over to ROX (RiscOS On X) and sawfish with a pretty theme (much like one I use).
She has icons for printing, trash, logging in, and OpenOffice, in addition to folders for her documents and public_html (which I explained to her was the place to put documents she wanted to share, so my Windows-using dad had a way to get at them). It works great. She loves it. I can modify it remotely. It doesn't break. It runs Linux.
-
Re:Installation still a chore?
Indeed, while the frontend exists (the easy and fun bit) the backend doesn't
;)
See my web page at http://mail.kde.org/~howells/kalypso for screenshots. -
Re:KDE keeps getting better
It's the dynamic linking of C++ applications on Linux that makes KDE so slow. Here is a discussion and some links about it.
-
Re:How to install from source?
Here's the page that I use when I want both a "stable" KDE and a "alpha/development" KDE on my system. It goes through the process for you step by step. Kudo's to the author...
David -
Re:How to install from source?Since the last 3l337 d00d was being a typical slashdot a$$, let me help...
1) He was right about this being an Alpha release - I'm a 1yr linux newb, and your best bet is to not attempt to install an alpha release. Go here first to see instructions on building/compiling the KDE source for the various versions.
2) Go here for a list of all the 'newbie' help files, and try out this guide if you don't know what the previous person meant by 'unpacking the tar.gz' files.

Re:AskGnome and KDE both have support pages where you can donate money. The problem is, they won't tell you what they are doing with the money. At Kuro5hin, Rusty told everyone how much he needed, where the money was going, and he hyped it big time.
Gnome and KDE don't disclose anything about their finances. They don't say where their money is going. They don't tell you how much they have collected or how much they have on hand.
I donated to K5 by sending Rusty some cash. It's the only way I would donate, because I am paranoid and I did not want to disclose my name. Normally, I would not send cash since someone could swipe it and I would never know. However, with K5, my account was updated so I know the cash ended up in the right hands.
If open source projects want more people to donate, they should:
- Prominantly link to the donation page from the home page.
- Put up a spreadsheet describing their financial situation in detail. That "c/o Ximian" line at Gnome has me putting my wallet away.
- That bar across the top of K5 was cool! You make a donation and The bar instantly moves. You may only contribute a few dollars, but you know you are making a difference. Open Source projects should provide up-to-the-minute feedback on how much money they have collected.
- If lots of open source projects start taking donations, it would be wise to set up a signing authority which audits their books, makes sure the project really exists, tells us the "Support Project Z" page is real, and not some scam artist swindling contributors. This isn't such a big deal for major projects like Gnome and KDE, but smaller projects won't get my money without proper authentication.
- Allow anonymous contributions, but let people confirm that their contribution was received. Some people want credit for their donation. Personally, I want to know that I am one of the X anonymous donors who have collectively contributed Y dollars. I know I could just make up a name and have it posted with the others, but I really just want to be listed as anonymous. To solve this problem, you could have a separate listing of anonymous contributions, each one with a transaction ID (or secret code) and dollar figure.

Re:hmm, donate $$ to Gnome or Perl?
As a matter of fact, KDE does have Mono bindings already. It's based on their new infrastructure which dynamically generates bindings for different languages (such as C# and Java, for example). Search the dot for more information.
As for the relationship between GNOME and Mono, Miguel did express his wish that future versions of GNOME be based on Mono. He has since explained his position on the GNOME mailing lists.
Seriously though, many of these trolls are simply a result of ignorance of facts which are easily verified on the net. The average Slashdot discussion contains so much misinformation it's appalling. Support GNOME, support KDE, and stop wasting everyone's time with holy wars. -

Re:Well I don't love .NETYes, and Miguel has provided an Open Source alternative to C#, one that will allow users to gain the same benefits, but without being tied to Passport (they can use the FSF's dotGNU), without being tied to Microsoft, and without paying Microsoft a penny. It doesn't seem like he did Microsoft any favors -- quite the opposite, in fact.
On the other hand, there is a KDE project that provides Qt bindings for C#:
developer.kde.org/language-bindings/qtcsharp/
So while Mono provides competition for
.Net, KDE just provides support.Of course, KDE claims that the purpose of their C# bindings is to support Mono.
So you have a choice. If you are going to condemn Mono, then you must also condemn KDE. Or you can support them both.

Re:No, I'm a friend of KDE.
Then you will be happy to know that KDE has a donations page as well!
;-) -
Re:I *hate* to see this...
> But I hate too see some other good OSS project/firm going into financial problems.
Who said anything about financial problems? People wanted a way to contribute directly, and GNOME provided the means.
Do you also believe that KDE is having financial problems? After all, KDE has a contributions page:
http://www.kde.org/support.html -
Re:From our base on skull island
Should that be Kobold? -
Alternative news storyNot to start a holy war, but:
From the donation page: "Love KDE? Want to give back to the community of mostly volunteer developers who have worked so hard to make KDE the powerful, flexible, friendly, fun desktop that it is?" There are a number of contribution levels a person can join at, so if you love KDE, consider helping the foundation out.

Runs Great!!! Fonts Look better in Win32 X
I love it and have been running it for a while. I use blackbox as my WM since I only run programs over the network it doesn't get in the way and leaves a tiny footprint.
I get by day to day with Kmail, GnuCash, Red-Carpet and a few other miscellaneous apps that I run over the in-house LAN.
As the subject says I noticed that programs use the same fonts whether I run the program on the Mandrake box locally or over the network, however when I run the progs over the network to the Windows machine all the fonts look nice....??!?!? Is that a feature? I think most the programs just plain look nicer in the Win32 port... maybe I'm delusional...... anything's possible. -
What does the K stand for?
Oberst Mathias Ettrich, coordinator of Die Kaiserliche Schreibtisch-Umgebung, has today recieved the Iron Cross (First Class) for his heroic and steel-willed leadership of the Reich's most prominent Desktop Environment project from the hands of Emperor Georg Friedrich I.
"We will stop those deceitful American Bolsheviks", Ettrich said to the cheering crowd in front of the Brandenburg Gate, in no doubt referring to the GNOME project.

Re:The question is...
I didn't see any science news on the dot (http://dot.kde.org) lately.
/. is not the dot. The dot is the dot, and always has been. -

Drop them!
Drop the vendor: they obviously haven't got a clue what they're talking about.
1) They should read their vendors' EULA's (and probably their own). No software these days is supported. ("This software is provided "AS IS"...).
2) Lots of free software is very much industry proven.
Perhaps you could try a little education. -
Re:Gnome 2 aimed at developers?
The future for GNOME is 2.0.1 and then 2.2.0.
No, the future of GNOME is being replaced with something that works. -

Re:Creatign a Bounds checker like tool
It already exists - it's called Valgrind - an AC post provided a link to it. In case you can't find it, it's here.

Re:What does this mean to the rest of us?
I've never used (or heard of) KJS until this article. What's so great about it?
KJS is the code that supplies JavaScript support the
KDE desktop environment. The good part is that it is opensource (gpl) and works pretty well to boot. -

A general case
Isn't bounds checking just a specialized case for checking any type of access to uninitialized memory? There are several tools that provide replacements for malloc() that can track *all* memory allocation, and some, like Valgrind, provide almost a virtual machine that tracks basically everything your program does. Any time you read, write, or allocate memory, Valgrind will track it, and tell you if it is in error. Like I said, array bounds checking is just a special case of this.

Sometimes it works
Wow, I'm suprised that almost everyone in this thread agrees that their projects suffer from a lack of willing contributors. My project (which is definitely for end-users) has what I consider to be a healthy base of about 4 regular contributors. Each time, I got an email from out of the blue saying they liked my program and wanted to help out. While I would say I still write the majority of the code, the contributions from my co-devs have been significant and invaluable to the project, and they've been actively contributing for months.
I also consider bug reports and feature requests to be a very important contribution. I'm always shocked to hear OSS devs say that this kind of feedback is essentially useless.
Ah well, just wanted to throw in my $0.02. OSS does work like it's supposed to sometimes. I'm glad it did in my case, I think it would be much less fun if I was still the only one working on my project.
