Dungeon Siege Latest Game-To-Film Adaptation
Thanks to Ferrago for their story confirming a film version of popular PC RPG Dungeon Siege is in the works, from the same creators who gave us the 'horrific' House Of The Dead movie, in which Sega's ghoulish gun-game series was shifted to "an island off the coast of Florida, [where] a techno rave party attracts a diverse group of college co-eds." The German producer and director of the forthcoming Dungeon Siege film, Uwe Boll, also currently working on the Alone In The Dark movie starring Christian Slater, breathlessly proclaimed: "Based on the success of House of the Dead, I believe Dungeon Siege contains major crossover potential because of its unique blend of action and fantasy, on the order of Lord of the Rings." -

Can Kids Tolerate Classic Games?
Thanks to EGM for their feature subjecting today's children to yesterday's gaming classics, as they "...rounded up nine children of the PlayStation generation - ages 10 to 13 - and forced them to play titles from the '70s and '80s." Games the kids comment on include Pong ("I would never pay to play something like this"), Tetris ("Which button do I press to make the blocks explode?"), and, evilly, E.T. for the Atari 2600 ("Didn't they bury this game in Mexico or something?") -

History Of Alien Vs. Predator Games Explored
Thanks to 1UP for their story exploring the varied history of Alien Vs. Predator games for PCs, consoles, and handhelds, pointing out "...aliens have fought Predators while eating Colonial Marines on half a dozen game platforms with no sign of letting up." Titles featured include Capcom's 2D arcade version, notable for "ridiculous life power-ups, including tossed salads, giant pizza pies with everything, and delicately-garnished plates of sea bream", the first-person shooter Atari Jaguar version, "employing the concept that would later become central to the franchise - the game would be playable from the point of view of all three species", and Rebellion's follow-up PC version, described as "a heck of a game if it's patched to repair the flaws in its initial release." -
OutRun 2 Shines, But Xbox Version In Doubt
Thanks to Kikizo for their in-depth look at Sega's OutRun 2 arcade machine, as the all-time classic racing game gets a now-playable Xbox hardware-based arcade sequel. Thanks to Yu Suzuki's obsession with a particular car manufacturer, you get to drive "one of at least eight different Ferraris, ranging from the Dino 246 GTS to the F50, including the 360 Spider and the awesome Enzo", and the game even shows track-side advertising from Ferrari sponsors like AMD, particularly piquant since the game is running on the Chihiro/Xbox's Intel chipset. However, Polygon reports that an Xbox conversion of the game is still in doubt, with an AM2 producer citing "disadvantages in terms of translation potential" and mentioning "problems with players renting most racing games as opposed to purchasing them." -
Arcade ROMs for Download, Legally
jgoeres writes "StarROMs, Inc. has just launched a pay-per-download service for classic arcade ROM sets. These are what you need to make your emulator fun and legal. This aims to bring ROM collection & emulator use out of the semi-underground and turn it into profit, but will it fly? They currently have about 60 games, all from the various incarnations of Atari over the years, with more on the way. Prices range from about $2 to about $6 per game. And no, they don't have Marble Man." -
Emulating Classic Games As A Profession?
jvm writes "Jeff Vavasour has been working on commercial emulation of arcade games at Digital Eclipse since the mid-1990s and Curmudgeon Gamer just posted an extensive three-part interview with him. The first part is for gearheads, delving into the origins of commercial emulation and the issues emulation vs. simulation. The second part is about the business of emulation, and describes a crisis of confidence in the late 1990s not unlike what the recording industry now faces. (Note, the emulation industry overcame their fear of downloadable ROMs!) The third part asks some personal questions, looks to the future of emulation, and reveals that some long-awaited arcade games may actually receive professional, commercial emulation attention. (Anyone remember I, Robot?)" -
Simpsons Hit A Home(r) Run With GTA Clone?
Thanks to GameSpot for their review of the PS2/Xbox/GC driving game, The Simpsons: Hit & Run, released this week, in which they shrewdly point out: "with perhaps the sole exception of Konami's 1991 arcade action game, The Simpsons, no [Simpsons games] have really even proved to be much in the way of fun." Although it seems "practically every mission in the game is a direct clone of one of the GTA driving missions", the reviewer thinks Hit And Run "finally manages to bring the world of the Simpsons to life with proper justice", and much of the appeal, according to Gamers.com, is in the references: "You'll plow through a field of Tomacco... and take a shortcut through the Stonecutters' Hidden Tunnel... you'll conduct missions that require you to collect 'flatmeat' for Cletus, [and] round up monkeys for Dr. Nick's experiments." -
Karaoke Revolution Specifics Unearthed
Thanks to GameSpy for their hands-on preview of Karaoke Revolution, Konami's PlayStation 2 title that uses the USB headset and "...requires you to match the rhythm and pitch for the vocals in a song" (although luckily for the tone-deaf among us: "Karaoke mode allows you to just kick it to a song without having to worry about performance.") This Harmonix-developed title, originally unveiled a couple of months back, sports "more than 35 tracks in all", from Mr.Mister to Avril Lavigne, and the previewer handily points out that "Not everyone can rock a guitar or a keyboard. Not everyone can dance... but almost all of us can sing (whether the results are appealing or not is another matter)." -

Innovative Casino Machine Designers Thriving
Thanks to Wired for their article discussing the success of ex-arcade designers in the casino machine business. The article focuses on Larry DeMar, once the co-creator of classic arcade titles such as Robotron, Defender, and Stargate, but now producing innovative video poker games such as Multi-Strike which "..add an element of fun to machines that traditionally have been routine gambling devices." According to industry executive Joe Kaminkow, "By making a game entertaining, you can enhance the wins and soften the losses for your players. You learn to give your players good cookies - things that are fun and exciting. Good designers understand how to dole out those cookies in just the right amount." Since a top-selling game "can reap more than $1 million per month in royalties for its creator", gambling machine design is a bigger business than many might think. -

Videogames You Love To Hate
Thanks to FiringSquad for their editorial discussing why sheer wretchedness is (allegedly) a good thing in gaming. The author rhapsodizes: "Bad experiences define this hobby. As much as we all enjoy sharing love stories about great moments in gaming, we tend to play up the bad stuff even more. Even though I'll always have fond memories about racking up 400,000 points in Donkey Kong... while a crowd cheered me on... the time that Daikatana taught me the true meaning of sorrow will somehow always be more powerful." Which legendarily bad games have given you fondly hateful memories? -
Tokyo Skyscraper Attacked By Space Invaders
Thanks to Tokyopia.com for their article showing a massive Tokyo skyscraper with Space Invaders projected on the side of it, as part of Taito's celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the all-time classic shooter. The special Anniversary Edition is being re-released for the PlayStation 2, and the remake has some interesting features: "You are in a 3D room... [and] can adjust the camera... [to] have the view you would have probably had if you were actually sitting at a real table top. While you play you can hear sounds coming from the other machines in the room." Special editions of the game also come with a classic tabletop controller, as Slashdot Games reported a few weeks back. -
Graeme Devine Leaves id Software
Thanks to Gamasutra.com for their news report (registration required) indicating that Graeme Devine has left id Software for Microsoft-owned Ensemble, the developers of the Age Of Empires series. The article elaborates: "Devine's career covers a substantial swath of videogame history, starting with porting games such as Pole Position for Atari while still in high school in the U.K. in the early 1980s. He later co-founded Trilobyte, where he was central to the development of the seminal CD-ROM title The 7th Guest and its follow-up, The 11th Hour. Most recently Devine was working on Doom 3 for id, in roles ranging from project manager to designer to programmer." Further details are as yet unavailable, but the piece suggests "..in his new role at Ensemble, Devine will be focusing primarily on game design." -

Namco Classics Hit TV Game Form
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to the new Namco Classics 5-In-1 TV Game, which has just shipped to U.S. stores, and is the latest in a line of officially licensed joysticks with built-in games from Jakks that include the Atari 10-In-1 and the Activision 10-In-1, with a separately-manufactured Intellivision 10/25-In-1 also available. The built-in games for Namco's "blast from the past" are Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Galaxian, Rally-X, and Bosconian. No word yet on whether games have been altered in conversion, as purists have claimed for the Atari TV Game, but casual gamers should still dig it. -

Space Invaders Controller Reborn
An anonymous reader writes "Fashioned in the style of the original cocktail machine, the limited-edition 'table top' controller for the PlayStation 2's 25th anniversary Japanese re-issue of Taito's Space Invaders is a miniature recreation of the actual arcade game, and includes a knob controller for maneuvering the cannon, plus a single red button for firing. Sign me up - I loved this game!" -
Tapper World Record Crushed
Greg Erway writes "There's a story at Twin Galaxies about my recent record-beating Tapper high score. It took almost 16 straight hours to rack up 9,100,125 points and beat the previous arcade game record, set back in 1986 by Mike Ward." Many of you probably remember Midway's Budweiser-sponsored Tapper arcade machine, and the story estimates that Greg filled over 75,000 virtual beer glasses, as well as having to kill off 79 bartenders at the end of the game to actually get the game over screen. -
Sega Confirms OutRun 2 For Arcades
Thanks to several readers for pointing out that Sega AM2 have opened an official page for their forthcoming arcade driving game, OutRun 2. This sequel to the all-time classic racer, originally released way back in 1986, was unveiled at Sega's private show in Tokyo last night, and confirms earlier information that it would run on the Chihiro arcade hardware, a modified Xbox arcade board, making it a prime candidate for conversion to Microsoft's console. The game also sports licensed Ferrari cars (the F50, F250, and Testarossa), and apparently, driving 'cool' will impress the girl in the passenger seat and get you different game endings. -

Thanks to GameSpot for reporting the news that Japanese developer/publisher Data East has officially been declared bankrupt. According to the article, "Data East has been in financial trouble since 1999, when the company requested a settlement in the district court in order to reorganize its finances because of a 3.3 billion yen ($28 million) debt." Donkey Kong Arcade World Record Broken
Thanks to EvilAvatar for pointing to a TwinGalaxies report revealing the world record on the classic Donkey Kong has been smashed, with a score of 947,200 by Washington gamer Steve Wiebe. According to the post, "Steve's achievement took nearly 2 hours of game play, and although he had lost his third life relatively early in the game, he kept things going for a remarkable period of time, reminding gamers everywhere: 'Never give up, never say die', classic advice from another Donkey Kong master, legendary gamer Bill Mitchell." Detailed stats reveal there are 116 playable screens that you can complete before reaching the impossible-to-complete 'kill screen' on this classic title, and it appears the magical million mark may theoretically be attainable. -
