Re:Alternative fuels are energy transport, not sou
So.. for hydrogen as fuel, there's going to be more energy consumed in its making, than would be available to be extracted by the car. And, there are many studies that indicate that ethanol has a similar problem.
Or just "plants". As in green plants, processed to produce ethanol. The only near term way either works is either by using coal plants or nuclear plants to produce it.
Somewhat off topic, but anyway:
Where I live (Sweden) there are seemingly lots of just-starting-up ethanol production plants along with lots and lots of ethanol buses in our towns. And the number of "green" cars is steadily rising, many of which run on the stuff. (Tax breaks and exemption from congestion charges being the main incentives.)I realize it's a poor argument, but if there was something fundamentally wrong with using ethanol as a medium- or large-scale alternative to fossil fuels I think someone would have pointed it out by now. There is the occasional criticism; it's are mostly "but will it be competitive with ethanol made in Brazil from sugar canes?", though.
On the other hand, I bet it's a lot more expensive than refining the black stuff that comes out of the ground. Fortunately for us, our ~= 200% taxes has prepared us for that...
Hm, Jeroen Tel's excellent tune "Alternative Fuel" is coming up on Kohina as I'm typing this. Coincidence? Of course not. I guess I'll have to post this now.

Re:when I code...
My personal favourite is Kohina - music from various 8-bit devices with emphasis (IMHO rightfully so) on SID-based music. Personally there were two major factors that got me into electronic music: Depeche Mode and Rob Hubbard. Of the two, I'd have to say Hubbard had more influence.

Re:commodore's hardware was fantastic
The sid chip had three monophonic digital oscillators, individual envelopes, and an analog filter. Sometimes people used it to simulate polyphony but mostly it was used to make a full song (ie. 1 osc for drums, 1 for bass, 1 for lead)
Some of the music composed on the C64 was amazingly complex given how limited it was. The C64 was also one of the first platforms used for "demos" (mostly in the form of crappy scrollers.)
For those who really really love the sound of the SID chip there are lots of options to get it back. Most notably is the SidStation which is sadly no longer made and the HardSid.
I also can't recommend Kohina enough. -
Kohina
Since nobody seems to have mentioned it yet, Kohina is a net radio that broadcasts true old school videogame tunes. The active playlist is not overly large , but quality, not quantity is the order of the day. Lots of Commodore 64 classics from Hubbard, Galway, Daglish et al, but also lots of really kicking arcade tunes and music from obscure Japanese console games. Great stuff for listening while writing code!

Re:*sigh* I give up on RIAA music for good
I will be boycotting the RIAA from now on as well, but I would hate to never listen to music again. Where can I get a list of "safe" alternatives to the RIAA so that I won't be sued?
If you're after high quality music and you want to be safe from RIAA&co., try classical music. I know that it isn't exactly the latest fashion but it's a fact that it there is a huge library of classical music that is mostly in public domain.
It is very different to the mainstream music of today but it's also very nice once you get used to it. At least I think so.
Also, one way to get music legally is to listen to mp3/ogg streams. I listen to Digitally Imported and Kohina from time to time.
