I wrote a short article about this at the other site a while ago. Especially, take a look at this article, which goes into considerable detail.

At least it's not going to be as bad as with a certain other geek news site.

But, really, the 37337sters are not going to like this!

The Trolls have scored somewhat of a victory at Kuro5hin. Rusty Foster over the weekend suspended the creation of new accounts. The bad side is that he apparently banned several well known k5 trolls. These martyrs sacrifices have not gone unnoticed!

There's an interesting discussion of this and some facts at kuro5hin.

I googled for the followup story on kuro5hin.org with the details about the secret service visit. It's here in case anyone else is interested.

It's a scary world when you have to include a disclaimer such as "Yo, it's a joke -- no need to start a super-secret file on me." in a Slashdot post making parody of the president. The Patriot Act has proven far too powerful and unjust.

On Kuro5hin, there was a comment during the anthrax scare about how to assassinate the president of the United States by infecting the vice president with an infectious disease.

The poster of that message received a visit from the United States Secret Service.

From the analysis of that tale, it seems that if you are flagged as a dangerous individual (through, presumably, religion, association with certain political groups, region of origin, etc) and make a nasty comment on a monitored website, the powers that be will investigate.

Scary thought indeed.

Here is why it makes sense. The OS product is only successful if it has user software. Breaking backward compatibility costs serious market share.

Microsoft obsessed about this, spending a big chunk of change testing every old program they could find with Windows 95. Jon Ross, who wrote the original version of SimCity for Windows 3.x, told me that he accidentally left a bug in SimCity where he read memory that he had just freed. Yep. It worked fine on Windows 3.x, because the memory never went anywhere. Here's the amazing part: On beta versions of Windows 95, SimCity wasn't working in testing. Microsoft tracked down the bug and added specific code to Windows 95 that looks for SimCity. If it finds SimCity running, it runs the memory allocator in a special mode that doesn't free memory right away. That's the kind of obsession with backward compatibility that made people willing to upgrade to Windows 95.

As we know from Kuro5hin's code windows code review:

It's noticeable that a lot of the "hacks" refer to individual applications. In some cases they are non-Microsoft. [...] Microsoft does not steal open-source code. Their older code is flaky, their modern code excellent. Their programmers are skilled and enthusiastic. To conclude, M$ writes good code but has to use dirty hacks for backward compatibility. It's not their fault, they have customers to care for.

I think there should be a great deal of concern of new search engines in China. The major customer in China is the state and a number of companies including Cisco, Yahoo, and Microsoft have been catering their software to permit Chinese censorship. The Chinese government has also been active in removing certain keywords from use in popular search engines, like google.
If I type in 'Falun Gong' or 'VIP Reference' (page 30-31)' in any of these new search engines, I recieve no content. Sure these my offer new commerical opportunities, like MP3 searching. Both they are part of state control in China. Companies back in 2000 had to agree to self-censorship. These new sites represent a growing trend of corporate complicity in Chinese censorship. And if common search engines are actively controlling what is 'found' on the Internet, there is great concern that average citizens will become acostumed to a regulated Internet.

Err, you might want to get your facts straight before you go spouting off. First off all, it was Red Hat that removed the Taiwanese flag from their "unified" KDE distribution. Second of all, what does this have to do with Google violating human rights? I'm pretty sure that Google isn't based in China and who's to say that they use KDE to admin their server farm?

If you're trying to impugn Slashdot's earlier story (which you fail to provide a link for) you'll have to provide some proof if you expect anyone to take you seriously.

HOWTO: write bad documentation

In every tech's life, there comes a time when management starts to insist on better documentation.

Perhaps a round of layoffs or outsourcing is imminent. Perhaps the simmering disdain between techs and management has escalated into open hatred. Either way, you are clearly on the way out, and management wants to grease the wheels for your successor.

Objectives

You wish to produce documentation that:

• will impress your management, and facilitate your remaining time in that job.
• will not substantially help your replacement(s).
• does not betray obvious signs of sabotage.

I don't have a lot of suggestions for you (maybe K5 and Ars Technica), but finding sights similar to those in your "net-sphere" is easy. Do a Google query for them, using a form like "related:slashdot.org" (replacing with your favorite site names). Some of the results may be what you're looking for, some may not, but they'll get you started, at least.

IANAL but I am not sure that a license has any binding nature on the copyright holder. The "You may not impose any further restrictions ..." bit is clearly aimed at the licensee when they pass the software onto other people not the copyright holder.

I can invite my neighbour to use my pool anytime she likes under certain conditions and that is a license. But the person doesn't have to break any of those conditions for me to be able to revoke the license whenever I like. If we had a contract that would be different but for a contract you need "consideration", the other party has to give me something in return, and in the case of the GPL that isn't true.

This issue has been brought up before and discussed on the other site, but I have never seen a really convincing arguement for why it is wrong. If it is correct then it has troubling implications, especially as copyrights can be transfered between people, not always volentarily.

Imagine as an extreme example Linus being sued into bankrupcy by a large corporation and the corporation getting all his assets, which would include not just his house and car, but all the copyrights to software that he has written. If the GPL can be revoked then that corporation could bring Linux development and distribution to a crashing halt until such time as all Linus's code could be removed and reimplemented.
