Bin Laden != freedom fighter"What kind of problems has kuro5hin encountered with their user moderated story queue?"
Well, kuro5hin did run a story calling Bin Laden a (misunderstood) "freedom fighter" and his war against the US a "strategic move".
If that's the kind of stories user moderation results in then I'd say user moderation sucks.

Michael, the hypocriteIn times when Slashdot makes up "tech news" reports and broadcasts them around the country, it's worth asking the question: when does michael the line into deception?
Although they claim this is a news site, michael openly admits his extreme bias and his affinity towards slanting the facts to fit his predetermined notions.
michael was hired in the middle of hijacking the www.censorware.org website in a very immature, unethical, and corrupt manner.
michael will frequently censor entire threads down to -1, simply because he doesn't agree with it.
Even worse, sometimes michael (or some other slashdot editors) will mod a thread down to -1, and revoke mod point priveledges if anything, *anything* in that thread is modded up.
Of course, this is just a partial list. michael's unprofessionalism, hypocrisy, and immaturity are well known to most long term slashdotters. It's amazing that despite this, and despite everyone's complaints to him and CmdrTaco, he has yet to change. This should not continue. michael should be fired now. -

GNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor
By Tim Copperfield
Raleigh, NC - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was
responsible for planting the "backdoor" inside the popular opensores operating system, Lunix (Stocks, Websites).
In a shocking announcement this afternoon, GNAA representative goat-see revealed that the mistery hacker who penetrated high-security defenses of the Lunix "source code" repository and injected viral gay nigger seed deep inside the kernel was indeed a full-time GNAA member.
"This is serious," goat-see began. This is a first event of such magnitude since GNAA opened its doors to new members in 1996.
Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website,
slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right
into the Lunix kernel, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA backdoor came right between the consideration of Novell to buy out
the entire Lunix Kernel programming team, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers
working for Novell with the gay niggers developing Lunix kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting
our next plans to add "backdoors" into the next favorite operating system, BeOS.

Kucinich on H1-B's and outsourcingI recently interviewed Dennis Kucinich for Kuro5hin and thought his take on this issue was particularly insightful.
"America's ability to create jobs in the future will depend on our ability to maintain leadership in information technology. This isn't only about jobs that we have lost, it is about the loss of future opportunities that will come up. It is a loss of the human capital, of the people who have done the jobs, and they know the stuff and they know the work and they are ready to take it to the next level. We are losing our future here, that is what the real issue is. We are losing our future. That's why, as President, I am the guy who is going to say, look, stop. Just stop it. We don't want to block people from other countries from making a living, but this is about corporations who are looking for cheaper labor. That is where you use tax laws to provide disincentives for these things. But, that is why you need to get out of the WTO, because you can't do that with the WTO in place. We are talking about the future of the American economy here and we'd better wake up."

Also reviewed on k5.I wrote this review of Oryx and Crake for k5 back in June of 2003. In a lot of Margaret Atwood's stuff, there's a theme where people try to understand/make peace with some inexplicable tragedy. At the end of Oryx and Crake, I felt like it wasn't clear why Crake decided to wipe out humanity; that may have been Atwood's intention.
Anyway, I'm happy to see something besides Flash Gordon science fiction getting reviews here.

A disappointing solutionAnd likely a sellout, which grants yet more bandwidth to the existing monopolies. IBOC doesn't compare very well to the Eureka 147 standard which has already been adopted in many places around the world, and doesn't step on anybody's toes. Not to mention the fact that EU147 uses open standards, whereas IBOC is completely proprietary.
I rambled at length about this awhile back on k5.

Re:Proud to be a Heretic!
Copyright isn't evil. Copyright is an important guarantor of a creator's rights. The whole Linux thing wouldn't be possible without copyright protection. A few
/.ers will disagree with that, but I think that nails down the beliefs of the majority.I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Personally I think copyright is evil, and I almost always find myself in the minority.
Nevertheless, the current copyright system is too heavily biased towards creators, at the expense of the public and the public domain, and the situation is only getting worse with the recent copyright extension and the DMCA.
Actually it's been my experience that very few slashdotters actually understand the DMCA. They echo the groupthink that the DMCA is bad, but this generally winds up being contradictory to the belief that copyright is good. What good is copyright law if you're going to let people distribute cracks to copyright protection schemes with impunity?
It appears obvious to me that the SCO lawsuit is utterly without merit. Obviously, everyone else here thinks so as well (probably even you).
Absolutely not. I think it's quite possible, maybe even likely, that someone from IBM stole some SCO code and put it in Linux. There's certainly no evidence against this, as you can't prove such a negative without access to the SCO source.
I've also seen a small minority of posts that coherently criticize Linux as a desktop platform, and I don't have to browse at -1 to find them.
I haven't seen much in this regard either way, so I can't really comment.
So while there is a herd mentality here on
/., and that's often a bad thing, I don't see that any of the things you've pointed out rise to the level of "unsayable", even within the confines of Slashdot.I can only think of one post that ever rose to the level of "unsayable." The first Slashdot troll post investigation. But lots of topics rise to lesser levels of unsayable. And many of the rest are drown out in a sea of +5 posts which are just plain incorrect (but are anti-DMCA, or pro-Linux, or whatever).

Caffeine is hacker fuel! The major problem I have is how do I get MORE caffeine!
Right now my vector is the coffee bean. I drink two double lattes a day.. That's 4 shots of espresso!
The major problem I have is how do I get more caffeine into my diet. Coffee stains your teeth and it's just not very good for you. I'm also pretty picky about where I get my fix and I WON'T go to Starbucks.
The Coders guide to coffee is pretty good.

If you haven't had REAL espresso you have't lived. San Francisco and New York are the only places I've been where you can get decent coffee at a moments notice.
If you live in San Francisco head up to North Beach and you can't go wrong.
I've actually thought about taking caffeine pills with me when I leave SF or got to a conference. Either that or I can just take my own espresso machine and my own coffee and get my fix that way... hard to lug around though.
ThinkGeek also has a number of products that include caffeine:

Medicine moving offshoreSee this recent article. Also, a lot of local and state goverments are looking into getting prescription drugs offshore. I wouldn't be suprised if they start looking at moving major medical offshore also.
There isn't too much that cannot be moved offshore. My last job was all remote sysadmin. So, if you're one of those types who thinks that their job is secure because somebody has to be there to take care of the hardware, think again. -
Finite Universe
Imagine a square sheet of rubber (so we can stretch, bend as we like). It has a finite area, and four edges. We choose one edge and glue it to its opposite edge. Now if you start from one point and draw a line in the right direction, you'll get back to where you started. Otherwise you'll just spiral around until you hit an edge.
Now we take the two circular edges and we glue them together, giving a donut (a torus). Now if you go in [what you see as] a straight line in any direction, you'll never reach an edge. The surface of the donut doesn't have any sides in the way the original sheet of rubber did, but it still covers a finite area.
N.b. The problem with this example is that it's difficult to think of just the surface of the donut, without imagining it being 'in' some larger space such as the 3D world.
Now if you want a headache, try to imagine doing this starting not with a square, but rather a cube, and joining opposing faces together. The first pair is easy - you get a sort of square donut shape. The second pair gives you a donut with an inner donut removed - something like the inner tube in a tyre.
The third one is the real bugger - you have to imagine joining the inner surface of the tube to the outer one, without going through the tube. I've seen a video [uiuc.edu] that included a representation of what a similar manouvre (sp?) would look like in the 3D world that the cube started in, and I still can't fully get my head around it.
No matter what direction you moved in this weird twisted-cube-thingy, you'd never see an edge. It would give you the same effect as if there were an infinite array of cubes , with the exact same thing happening in each one. When you reach the edge of one cube, you ust move into the next one ... which is identical to the last one.
This article says that the Universe is doing the same sort of thing, only starting with a dodecahedron instead of a cube (i.e. 6 pairs of faces instead of 3). Don't seriously try to picture this, or your head'll explode ...

What Happened to the Censorware Project?
Censorship: The Battle Begins At Home -
Re:getting rid of spammers
I think the spam business now consists of mostly addresses being sold to other spammers.
I've thought the same thing for years. It's similar to the online porn industry. The little guy throws up a website and gets into a few affiliate programs and thinks the traffic and money is just going to come rolling in. In reality, it's incredibly difficult to get your little porn site noticed amid the thousands of others.
The ones making the money are those selling porn hosting services, content, etc. and these turn out to be mostly a handful of large companies. There was a really good story on Kuro5hin about this about a year ago from someone who actually tried, and sort of succeeded, to make money in the porn industry. My observations regarding the spam industry are that it's just about the same.
Don't think I haven't thought about going over to the dark side and starting to spam either, if not for a living, then at least part-time to make beer and hardware money. I mean, if you are honest with yourself, who wouldn't? It's the allure of easy money. What could be easier than sending out half a million e-mails for a $50 product and having just a 5% of a percent (.0005) sales rate. It's hard to think of an easier way to make $12,500. Alas, it can't be that easy because if it was, everybody would be doing it.

Once bitten

Compare with Kuro5hin. Last year, the site owner asked for $70K so that he wouldn't have to take a full time job or drown the site in third party adverts (it has always had paid user-adverts). He promised great things for the site and the code that runs it, and shared a grand vision of seeding a Collaborative Media Foundation with the money. He got the money.
What happened was that he then spent a year kayaking, writing diaries about kayaking, breaking features (search has been broken for months now), adding third party adverts, selling premium subscriptions, and some minor fiddling with the ratings system that has basically made it pointless to rate anything (i.e. contribute) any more. The Collaborative Media Foundation turned out to be a tax dodge, and recently he let slip that he's been doing consulting work full time, and actually cranking up his fees to turn away business.
And it turned out that the site costs nothing to run. The bandwidth is donated in return for advertising, the hardware is donated. The only costs are the admin's time, and the user advertising revenues (when he was still publishing them) actually covered the notional (but completely falacious) $30K salary that he was claiming.
The problem with paying someone a lump sum is that you then have no leverage over them. Sure, the Wikipedia guy might not just go kayaking with the money, but the K5 admin seemed like one of the good guys as well.

Re:What the? What if the person is not an American citizen? Last I checked, immigrants--especially of the illegal variety--aren't given the right to an attorney, or a fair trial, or to be secure from search and seizure. In fact, check out this story (which was reported on by numerous mainstream news outlets, but the facts of which are admittedly hazy).
Then again, look at Jose Padilla. In plenty of situations, citizens aren't given those rights, either.

Is SWIFT fun?
How many discussions about politics and technology are going on on SWIFT? How much art creation or intellectual pursuit? How many blogs or personal homepages?:)
As far as I am concerned, using SWIFT would be even less fun than using the internet behind the Great Firewall of China. -

YM "Vintar's Hardwired Gets Movie Treatment" HTH.From a more detailed writeup on Kuro5hin from last year:
Yet another Hollywood travesty. I know a lot of folks out there must be Asimov fans, so I thought you might want to know, a film called "I, Robot" is being made. But according to the news, it's NOT the Ellison treatment, and it's not the Asimov story, even adapted. The studio just bought the rights to the name.
The film, then called "Hardwired", apparently started out as yet another ho-hum robots-trying-to-take-over-the-world film. No big deal there. One more piece of screenplay-by-committee out of Hollywood isn't news.
In the last year, though, someone at Fox came up with a really great marketing idea. Buy the rights to just the name from a famous work of classic science fiction, use that, then make a series of crappy robots-try-to-take-over-the-world movies, but they would almost be guaranteed money-makers because fans would be expecting something good (to wit, the story attached to that title for the last few decades).
As other people have pointed out, Ellison's screenplay of the real I, Robot is worth reading. There's a free chapter at twbookmark.
