Re:Pray tell...
this is the same ignorance that insists on demanding that muslims denounce terrorists, claiming they don't.
here.
LMGTFY* Graduated from Yale Law School
* Worked as staff of a U.S. Senate subcommittee
* Staff of the Presidential Impeachment Inquiry Commitee,
advising the U.S. House Judiciary Committee during the Nixon impeachment proceedings.
* Faculty, University of Arkansas Law School
* Part-time chairman of the Legal Services Corporation, appointed by President Carter.
* Member of the Rose Law Firm
* National Law Journal named her twice one of the 100 most powerful lawyers in America
* Co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Family
* Chaired the Arkansas Educational Standards Committee
* First Lady of Arkansas for 12 years
* First Lady of the United States of America for 8 years
* Chaired President Clinton's National Task Force on Health Care Reform
* Elected United States Senator from New York; served for eight years
* Served for five years as President Obama's Secretary of State, fourth in line of succession of the Presidencyhttp://addictinginfo.org/2015/...
Even though her major initiative, the Clinton healthcare plan, failed (due to Republican obstruction), you cannot deny that it laid ground for what we have today, the Affordable Healthcare Act, something Clinton supports and would continue.
She played a leading role in the development of State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provides the much-needed state support for children whose parents cannot afford nor provide them with adequate healthcare coverage.
She was also instrumental in the creation of the Adoption and Safe Families Act and the Foster Care Independence Act.
Successfully fought to increase research funding for prostate cancer and asthma at the National Institute of Health (NIH).
She spearheaded investigations into mental illness plaguing veterans of the Gulf War; we now have a term for it – Gulf War Syndrome.
At the Department of Justice, she helped create the office on Violence Against Women.
She was instrumental in securing over $21 billion in funding for the World Trade Center redevelopment.
Took a leading role in the investigation of health consequences of first responders and drafted the first bill to compensate and offer the health services our first responders deserve (Clinton’s successor in the Senate, Kirsten Gillibrand, passed the bill).
Was instrumental in working out a bi-partisan compromise to address civil liberty abuses for the renewal of the U.S. Patriot Act.
Proposed a revival of the New Deal-era Home Owners’ Loan Corporation to help homeowners refinance their mortgages in the wake of the 2008 financial disaster.
Was a major proponent of sensible diplomacy which brought about a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, and brokered human rights with Burma.
Oversaw free trade agreements with our allies such as Panama, Colombia, and South Korea.
Was the most traveled Secretary of State to date.
The Clinton Foundation, founded by her and her husband, has improved the living conditions for nearly 400 million people in over 180 countries through its Initiative program. These are not all of her accomplishments. Her activism on behalf of women a children across the world is renowned. Her activism for raising the minimum wage and combating climate change is stellar. You do not have to support what she does or stands for. But do not say she doesn’t have any accomplishments. The conservatives who say this are the ones who are pushing for Ted Cruz – who brought on a $24 billion shut down. That, to them, is an accomplishment?
Yes, Hillary Clinton has accomplishments. You don’t have to like them, but they do, in fact, exist.
Besides, after the abomination of Bush the Lesser...now you're worried about qualifications?

And those are just false claims that led to convictions that were overturned by one specific kind of evidence. It doesn't cover false claims that never led to a conviction, false claims that led to a conviction that were overturned by other kinds of evidence, or false claims that have led to convictions that have not been overturned.

Re: Did they know who the culprits were?
Nope. It's an actual fact. And there's plenty of proof:

Re:no way

Just the first sentence of the wikipedia article makes it clear:

There will be a quota. It might not be explicit, documented, precise, or known outside the brain of the person who implements it. It might even be denied, but it's there.
You can't favor a group without reducing quality unless there are people who are perfectly identical in quality, which of course is not true.
You might not have given an explicit preference, but we all know how this works in the USA and generally elsewhere as well. (one strange exception is India) It's the same groups, more or less, that get favored. The preference is thus implied.

Re:Paris isn't exactly French these days.
There it is AGAIN. A leftist, making excuses for Islamists, and trying to deflect the blame and say the whole thing is the West's fault for being so kind and admitting these people. How many Syrian refugees have Islamic countries taken in? How about a word about them? What is *with* the left-wing alliance with Islamists? Why is there always one to jump right up and defend them? You know they execute homosexuals and legally allow spouse abuse?
All you had to do to avoid looking like a stupid right wing blowhard was to run a web search. Three moslem countries seem to lead the list:
Turkey 2,748,367
Lebanon 1,500,000
Jordan 1,265,000
Germany 484,000

Re:Despots Control Those Countries
Please point us to the website that holds the information that allows farms to be more productive. Do you really think there are some secret farming tricks that you can only access if you have internet access?
Actually, experience in Africa shows that the most immediate benefit of Internet access to subsistence farmers is actually to improve their market power. Improvements in farming methods are also very valuable, but given the fact that most such farmers never travel more than a few miles from their homes and have very limited access (pre-Internet) to communications infrastructure, they're at a severe disadvantage when negotiating with the factors who buy and transport their excess production. A simple "featurephone" with SMS and rudimentary web browsing capabilities allows them to understand market conditions and prices, and that alone dramatically increases their net income.
There's been a lot of research on this, particularly in Africa. Here, I'll google that for you, too: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=impact+of...

Re:What the HECK...

Meh, that nothing
Where I work we have this system called an open-plan office. While it is still difficult to deter people from eating while working, it does limit the sleeping in the office thing. I also haven't seen anybody bathing in the office yet (thank goodness, but on the other hand it might be sorely needed for some). I'd say we have made lots of productivity gains by limiting the non-work behavior like that.

Re:"even fewer jobs"?
Ok, let's not argue over technicalities then.
Wrongly claiming that automation has caused the number of jobs to decrease when it has never done that is not a "technicality".
This still sounds hand-wavy. Do you have sources to support those claims?
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=labor+for...
Having more demand than supply does not mean demand is infinite.
... The demand for those services is quite limited.Look, the debate about "technological unemployment" has gone on for centuries. The fact is that it has never happened before and that there is no hard evidence that it will happen in the future. Like the academic economists and politicians that hold this view, you have provided no evidence that it will happen either. And in light of centuries of doomsaying without this ever happening, you better have some damned good proof that this time, it's different.
This is typical Libertarian rhetoric.
No, it's not "libertarian rhetoric", it is pointing errors in you reasoning: you argue that people leave the labor force because of automation, but you are misattributing the causes. Giving people the freedom to pursue education, learn more job skills, spend more time with kids and family, work shorter hours, and/or to take time off for entrepreneurship have been explicitly stated goals of progressive policies, like public higher education, ACA, family leave, minimum wage, and welfare. You can't promote these policies on the one hand and then blame automation for the fact that people work less when these policies are doing what they are intended to do.

Re:10%. 90%
And as usual, you just don't get it. I gave one example. Out of many. You can find them yourself easily enough, and at least one other example has been given here by others.
And yet, you linked to the same guy three times. Why not three different people?
Catching somebody lie about the methodology of their "science" paper is indeed ripping it to shreds. Sorry you don't understand that, but so be it.
But what if the person doing the "catching" is actually the one who is verifiably lying? Your blogger quotes words that aren't in the paper ("Expertise for each consensus estimate was assigned qualitatively, using ordinal values from 1 to 5"), and the bogus quote is central to his argument that the chart is deceptive. Or are you referring to his earlier claim that they were lying because they did not include a paper (Powell 2015) that was never actually published?
Again, that was but one example of many. You can find more here.
Is it ironic or insightful that your link shows no results at all?
-
Re:10%. 90%
As usual, Jane, you don't fail to amuse. The "people ripping it to shreds" is one guy, with what appears to be a personal grudge against John Cook and the Skeptical Science web site, complaining about one chart used in the paper with much histrionics and hyperbole.
And as usual, you just don't get it. I gave one example. Out of many. You can find them yourself easily enough, and at least one other example has been given here by others.
Is this some new meaning of "ripping it to shreds" that I've never heard of before or are you just repeating what you read on some retired weatherman's blog?

Re:vote with your feet
Give up. you sound ridiculous now.
You sound ridiculous, vacillating from one defense to another.
Burden, proof, claimant.
It's not a problem to do so, but you made it clear from the start that you wanted to dismiss anything that didn't fit your political leanings as "news", which is quite a hypocritical position to take given that you're commenting on a sensational news story on Slashdot, "How San Francisco Hazed a Tech Bro".
I gave you concrete examples of stories that achieved widespread and prolonged news coverage. I would expect somebody commenting on American politics to be familiar with them, or if not, to do a little fucking research on your own before dismissing it out of hand.
You could start by reading the Wikipedia page, which is backed up by references. The short version is that a black guy got shot by a cop, there was an outcry that it was racist police brutality, and it made national news.
Brown was called "a gentle giant". Then the police released video footage of Brown robbing a convenience store shortly before the incident, physically shoving the clerk when he confronted him. Idiots like John Oliver then say this video is "irrelevant", like it wouldn't pertain at all to his character or state of mind. The officer was eventually cleared, both by local authorities and a federal investigation, with witness testimony matching forensic evidence that backed up the officer's account. And yet this Brown thug is still a poster child for Black Lives Matter. Oh, and if you use the word "thug" you're racist.

Try getting a job when you're as tall as Dinklage
As long as we're going for non-sequiturs, lets go all out.
Believe it or not, Congress knew and understood very clearly when they passed the Equal Pay Act that it cost businesses more to employ women because of Pregnancy, for example
For the same reason it costs more to employ men who are likely to take extended paternity leave or drop out of the workforce entirely for several years. And why they make less money when they rejoin the workforce, with less experience than their former co-workers.
Equality is neat that way.

Re:Screw San Fran
Yep, good plan. Try to "objectively" measure something by using metrics which objectively measure something you're not interested in and can easily game.
(1) People actually are interested in graduation rates, dropout rates, and test scores, that's why these metrics matter.
(2) To the degree that they are "gamed", they can be reasonably assumed to be gamed similarly in different states. That is, while these metrics make for lousy comparison over time, and hence a lousy instrument for managing educational systems, they tell us something about relative performance between states right now.
(3) Citing these metrics in this thread isn't an endorsement of the metrics, it is just to give simpletons like him and you easy to digest facts. If that doesn't satisfy you, you are welcome to read up on the detail.
Remember, the thread started with Daemonik's ludicrous claim that Kansas' educational system was failing relative to California because it wasn't spending too much money. Iffy as test scores may be, they still tell us a lot more about the performance of an educational system than how many dollars we spend per student.
Ignore my naysaying, clearly you are the genius of our age.
Well, thanks for your excellent demonstration of the shortcomings of the UK educational system.

Re:Screw San Fran
And as an immigrant you quite likely have had far more opportunities for mobility than an average European. Likely free or very cheap college education, probably better schools and better child healthcare. So?
You're guessing and you're wrong.
They quite literally cherry-picked points to get a weak correlation.
In fact, the correlation is quite strong and consistent between many different studies.

Re:I sympathize I ride DC's METRO rail
As a regular commuter of TriMet, your experience is sorely lacking diversity. I use TriMet on a regular basis. I don't have a second car, I don't pay for parking, and my pass is $50 for the entire year -- the rest is subsidized by my employer. And I still want to avoid it like the plague. I'll focus on the technical issues and not even politics or the union-management relationship.
Using LMGTFY because it's convenient and you can readily see what the link is before you click it, here's a search of @trimet's Twitter account for "Steel Bridge." It's chock full of signal or switch problems on that bridge. And those impact my commute regularly. They're working on improvements, but not until July 2017. None of the other issues cause as many problems as that Steel Bridge. It should have a higher priority.
Customer service is available 8-5 M-F, excluding holidays. At the end of the morning rush and right as evening rush is starting.
Their on-time performance is steadily declining. March 9 presentation.. I've heard by rumor -- looking at other Twitter accounts -- that when they make these reports they define "on time" as being within 20 minutes. If that's true and those numbers are still that bad, they've got a massive problem. Their published adjustment is by 3 minutes either direction. Their published "Frequent Service" standard is 15 minutes. So if that's true, MAX is missing a cycle of "Frequent Service" almost 1 in every 4 times.
They steal on-time, in-service buses to handle MAX failures, impacting bus riders. I've missed appointments I should have made handily. And I'm not the only one. Page through the contingent of complaints to @trimet to see what a rider's day is like. There are two other accounts, unaffiliated, run by volunteers, that are really what @trimet ought to be -- @trimetscanner and @unTrimetAlerts. I rely on these.
Last year was bad enough that I continued paying my ~$5/mo pass and STILL looked to friends, family, acquaintances to get me to/from work when I could. The drive in, despite increased chance of variability due to traffic conditions, was actually pretty regular.
Tl;dr: you can't cherry-pick your trips and say MAX is reliable.. It's not.

Re:Don't take away everyone's freedom
Thank you for helping me make my point. We are saying the same thing, which is, you can't associate these types of actions with a religion because a) these lunatics are not representative of said religion, regardless of what religion that is and b) there are so many different interpretations of each religion, it's impossible to group them as a whole.
Unfortunately, you go on to completely contradict yourself by talking about your understanding of Christians in America to be such that they wouldn't do such things. Guessing you're unfamiliar with the KKK or the Westboro Baptist Church, huh? What about Eric Rudolph, remember him? He was a Christian, and he bombed a huge crowd there's plenty more. Yes, I cited a source with a particularly "on the nose" domain name, sorry it was too much for you. If you had been brave enough to click, you'd see that it's actually a well organized site with good navigation illustrating the hundreds if not thousands of incitements to violence in the Bible. Re:Morons Just Don't Understand
Refusing to mention any facts; and more than that refusing to dispute a stated fact / proposition is another.
If the Wikipedia and all of the articles it references, and common knowledge are all wrong (or part of a giant "left-wing" (ha ha)) conspiracy then the onus is on you to provide facts that prove/show this. The mountains of evidence that are only are simple Google search away are not proof positive but your demand that someone else do this simple Google search for you is ridiculous.

You cannot own Win7 and you don't control it.
Please show us the EULA from Win7 that gives M$ permission to shove Win10 down our throats.
What, you haven't heard of this thing called Internet Search Engine Technology? Welcome, time traveler from 1981!
After all, we did pay for Win7, so we have the right to use it as long as we want to.
Section 8 of the EULA says you don't own the software. PERIOD. You don't own it and under the validation clause Microsoft can modify it any way they want, at any time, without any notice. And if that causes any damage to you or any other party, the damages Microsoft may pay are limited to the price you paid for the software, and since you got it free with the hardware, that would be a total of nothing, unless your local state law provides differently (good luck with that one).
I guess you shouldn't have clicked through without reading it, sucker...
