For those...
...who don't know if they want to support the club, go to the mirror list:

Try out the beta, if you like it, join the club and help focus the direction of a decent distro.
Yes, I use mandrake. No I am not a club member, or employee. -
Re:Money woes?Summary of Mandrake's Future, from their perspective.
The line I find most interesting is this one:
The world already boasts of several million Mandrake Linux users, and we know at least 200,000 of you. We could get over this crunch if less than 20,000 users became Silver Members of MandrakeClub.
/sigh
I guess since I run it on my desktop, and finally convinced my wife to run it on her laptop, I should cave and make that 19,999 users. -
Mandrake getting desparate?According to this, they are planning on reaching break-even by spring of this year:
Reaching the "break-even" point is now planned for the next release of Mandrake Linux in the spring of 2003.
Perhaps they didn't get the money they needed from the last plea they gave out, and so are speeding up the development process to get new versions out.
They just released 9.0 in November, if I recall correctly.
That being said, I think I'll finally chip in, as I like the distribution, and have only been downloading ISOs for a while now. -
Re:What about English outside the U.S.
Mandrake Linux actually has very good language support. Yes, the default is US English but you can install the distribution in Esperanto if you really wanted to (although the Esperanto translation isn't quite finished yet). You can check out the status of any of the (officially) supported languages here.
I'm not posting this to pick nits, I really like the way Mandrake does translations for their distribution. You can join the Mandrake translation mailing list if a language you know and can translate isn't supported. You can submit patches and make the distribution better for others who may not be able to do the translation themselves.
Yes, Mandrake is a for-profit company but there are many less-popular languages that it would be too cost-prohibitive for Mandrake to hire people to translate their tools into (Waloon, Tajik, Malay, or Tamil, anyone?). This effectively opens Linux to people in many areas where it would normally not be an option.
For example, being a former Soviet republic, I don't think Tajikistan has too much money to be spending on Federal IT infrastructure. Many of the Mandrake tools are fully translated into Tajik and most are at least half-way there. This gives their government access to a less expensive, more versatile operating system that can run on more different types of hardware and less expensive hardware.

Re:Perhaps not
I for one, have never successfuly installed a copy of Red Hat first time round since 5.0 to 8.0
Mandrake Linux has a nice installer -- even Windows users should be able to install Mandrake successfully! :-> -

get a MacWhile not the lowest cost solution in the world, any relatively modern PowerMac fits the bill in terms of software ease-of-use, application support (when running OS X), and low power consumption.
The early model G3's shouldn't have any problem with the kind of network loads required (the cable/DSL bandwidth is going to top out before the CPU, disk or memory bandwidth becomes a problem) and should only cost about $400. Add in some extra RAM and a copy of OS X, and you're looking at no more than $650. If you go with Darwin, NetBSD, or one of the PowerPC Linux distro's, and you can get by with just the base system price.
If you really want a deal, and feel up to a bit of hardware hacking, you could look for a dead iMac. So long as the logic board is Ok, you should be able to hack together a power supply (if/when you need a monitor you can use any VGA style monitor with a Mac/VGA converter). The only real issue with an iMac would be support for a second hard-drive, but you might be able to make due with an external drive on a USB or Firewire port.
I don't know what a dead iMac goes for these days, but I can't believe you'd have to spend more than $300.

Last time I checked......there were a few free software options available.
And for those who can spare a few pennies for a distro, there is always CheapBytes.
But the author does have an interesting point. Kind of like the question: Why did someone pay me $1010 USD for the Eaglehorn bow a week after the Diablo II xpack was released?
;)This is all just proof positive that the real wealth resides in the human mind, not in a few flipping bits.

Re:Crossing Lines
If you just want to get familiar with GNU/Linux then try a CD based distro like Knoppix. Just pop in the CD and restart the machine to boot from CD-ROM drive. It works like a charm and comes with ton of software (almost anything you can think of) in every category. Play around with it and see how you like it. I use it (even run Apache, Squid and other stuff) and I love it (no, I don't work for them or anything). Once you are ready to take the next step and install GNU/Linux on your hard drive you can try Debian (Kmoppix is based on Debian), Mandrake, ELX for starters. They have most user friendly installation and configuration.

Re:Get Mandrake 9.0
Where are some mirrors for users to d/l Mandrake 9.0 ISO's?
Hm. I wanted to do the obvious and point you to the mirror list at Mandrake. However, Mandrake seems to be slashdotted, which surprises me somewhat. Oh well. Instead, try downloading it from this place.

Versions...
support for RedHat 7.3 and Mandrake 8.2
Gee thats nice, good job Mandrake 9 isn't due any time soon. Daresay RH8 won't be far behind either. -
Re:What's the problem?
Well, I guess you're right. Nobody should be allowed to make money off of other people's work. The issue here is that linux companies are allowed to tinker with the product and sell it. The GPL allows this. The question is, is CleanFlicks allowed to do this? If each person is getting a legally purchased copy of the movie, then sure they are. I could buy a movie and pay someone to edit it for me.

Re:Wow, 9.0 so soon?
they've really been churning them out lately.
Meanwhile, at the Mandrake Linux News page:March 18th, 2002 - Mandrake Linux 8.2 is available!
July 23rd, 2002 - Mandrake Linux 9.0 Beta 1 appears
A little over four months? Yeah, I'd say so. :-) -
Re:Too bad.....

Why? Because I showed my mom Gentoo....
As a Linux user wanting to spread The Word, I tried to get my parents interested in Linux and Open Source Software. I showed them Mandrake - all the cute little icons and the cool games and screensavers. Since they dont do much other than web-surfing (mainly reading email thru a web interface), it seemed like a natural choice.
Then, I made the mistake of showing my mother a Gentoo Linux install - a screenfull of bizzare and verbose gcc flags scrolling across a text console. She became frightened and intimidated. I tried to explain to her that all I did was type 2 words, "emerge gnome", and that it was nothing to be scared of - and I tried to explain the process. Now, shes afraid to try Linux - and everyone I try to recommend Linux to gets scared off by her proclamations of how "difficult" it is.
*sigh* Oh well.....who was it that said "GUIs are like diapers - everyone grows out of them eventually". -
Is this old news?Mandrake has had an Itanium product for a while now.

Damn Mandrake users!

Re:Its somewhat depressing...
It's absolutely not a donation system. It's a service that allows a commercial company to make business with Free Software, which makes a lot of sense. You know, I seriously doubt that StarOffice 6.0 (final) which is available for download at MandrakeClub hasn't been charged by Sun to MandrakeSoft!!

Here you go. Mandrake's auto-install page.
-
Re:SO6.0
No, only open-office is available in the main distro as far as I know. StarOffice is avaible for download to Mandrake Club members now (Silver members and above) (look at http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/club/]) and will be in the packs (ProSuite, Powerpack...) in one month I guess...

Mandrake's PHP Hammered: Announcement Text BelowMandrake Linux 8.2: Solid server, Friendly desktop.
Altadena, CA - March 18th 2002 - MandrakeSoft is proud to introduce Mandrake Linux 8.2 as the most feature-rich, multi-purpose Linux operating system ever made available to the public. This new version of our flagship product combines the power and flexibility of a full-featured Linux server with the simplicity and elegance of well designed graphical user interfaces.
Mandrake Linux 8.2 is the best "all-in-one" solution for saving time and money with personal computers: installation couldn't be easier with our world-famous graphical installer, and no post-configuration hassles means that your Mandrake system is immediately ready for work. Depending on your requirements, Mandrake 8.2 can be installed either as a full-featured & powerful Linux server, or as a highly productive personal workstation.
New server features include the ability to use an encrypted filesystem for protecting sensitive data; "kernel-secure" adds important security features to the default Linux kernel; and an "Enterprise" kernel delivers SMP (Symmetric Multi Processing) and Hi-memory support (above 1024 MB) for high-end servers. Mandrake Linux 8.2 also introduces a quick and efficient way to set up printers and scanners; a new file sharing feature for easily sharing files and directories in a networked environment; and improved "hot-plug" support that lets users install new devices quickly and painlessly without having to reboot the system. A new remote desktop utility, RFBdrake, is extremely useful for controlling machines remotely within a LAN or securely through the Internet.
New desktop features include a completely redesigned Mandrake Control Center that serves as a central location for Mandrake-specific tools and utilities, as well as many new configuration wizards. Desktop users will appreciate the task-oriented menus in GNOME and KDE which greatly simplify locating applications by categorizing them into common "tasks".
MandrakeFirstTime is an easy-to-use wizard that helps setup a desktop environment (KDE, GNOME, etc.), choose a theme and configure email settings. DrakNet, the Internet connection and network utility, efficiently helps users configure all types of network connections, from common dial-up modems to DSL and cable connections.
The reworked version of MSEC, a utility for configuring the security level of a machine (Standard, High, Highest, Paranoid) is more powerful than ever. Also included are the latest stable versions of KDE and GNOME which both offer some great new features and applications such as anti-aliased fonts and Evolution (an Outlook-like email client and personal information manager). StarOffice 6.0 is included with the ProSuite and PowerPack Editions.
"With version 8.2, Mandrake Linux proves that it is the ultimate Linux experience. This new release is the result of our four year commitment to providing the best operating system ever. Mandrake Linux has long been the preferred Linux distribution for individuals, but Mandrake 8.2 marks a new step in our penetration of the corporate environment. The features and unparalleled ease of use make 8.2 an incredibly efficient and affordable alternative to UNIX and Windows 2000" said Jacques Le Marois, CEO of MandrakeSoft.

Re:Why pay for something that you alreadt\y own?Perhaps you should go check out the links at the bottom of the page. Specifically, this one.
The $5 a month isn't paying for something you already 'own', it's supporting open source development. Think about it. Mandrake releases their code under the GPL. However, if they must lay off their coders, then how will they continue to contribute to the body of GPL software? The answer is easy. They won't.
You're not paying for the code. You're paying for the developer's time, the machine, and the building in which he/she works. While the result is free, the development is not.
For years, the Open Source community has been releasing free code to the masses, many of whom do not, or can not contribute. Well, this is your chance. If you've never submitted code, artwork, documumentation or even a bug report, THIS is your chance to help support the community which has given you so much.
Mr. Anderson, this is your wake up call.

You don't say?
NO SHIT, DUMBFUCKS. Who wants to use a clunky half-assed open-sores hippy OS when an obviously superior product (Win2K) is out?
