Re:is webmail to blame
There's tools like this for importing old mail into GMail:

Re:Cool!
I suppose you could hack it somehow to sync to iCal, which would sync to your Palm
Oh please somebody hack this, then I will as happy as the day GLM came out. -
Google GMail Loader
I'm not sure how AOL works, but you can give Mark Lyon's handy little application a try to forward the old mail to a gmail account. You could download your AOL emails to some local Unix style mailbox and use the app after. There is IMAP support planned, but it's not implemented yet as far as I know. Hope that helps. If not, mod me down!

Re:IMAP?
I found this app, called GMail Loader:

GMail Loader
I seem to recall AOL offering a standalone email client based on Thunderbird. If not, I know I've seen people using Thunderbird to access their AOL email. I'd recommend using that (or any standalone email client for that matter) and GMail Loader to import the mail into GMail. That's how I transitioned email from all of my old accounts into GMail.

fetchmail + gmail loader ?
Can you download the email from AOL, or is it webmail only? I would look at a combination of fetchmail http://www.catb.org/~esr/fetchmail/ to get the mail and gmail loader http://www.marklyon.org/gmail/ to load it to gmail.
Even if the AOL email is webmail only, someone may have a tool to get the email and put it into mbox format. A quick google shows that web2pop http://www.jmasoftware.com/english/ might be helpful.
What ever way you go, it'll probably be held together with spit and duct tape, but it's only a one time thing.
Good luck. -
Re:Why can't this be a joke?
..why not work on a feature such as downloading email from my existing POP accounts, so I can consolidate all my email into one service?
Check out GMail Loader (GML). I think this takes care of what you're looking for.

Gmail Loader
I've been looking to do the same although my email archive isn't nearly as massive but I would still like to consolidate it all. One option I've been considering is GMail Loader. All it does is forward your mailboxes from a variety of clients to a Gmail account and you can read and search it from there. At this point all the Gmail privacy concern post should begin...

Re:IMAP?
I would love to use IMAP to upload several hundred MB of old mail, so that ALL my mail is available to be searched. Mark Lyon's GMail Loader can do this by sending all your mail to your gmail account via SMTP, but everything is marked as unread, and the date in the browse view is the day you imported, not the day the mail was sent.

Re:don't be greedy
I explained that I would pay for the ability to have my old email (in mbox format) imported with the correct dates.
Have you tried GML (Gmail Loader)? It works pretty nice, I could import around 250Mb of old emails and then filter them into labels.

Privacy vs. tech
I just don't understand why someone would move 12 years of their life into the data warehouse of someone you don't control.
You're right. Re-read Brad Templeton's privacy concerns over Gmail and the prospect of storing the "12 years of your life into the data warehouse of someone you don't control" becomes rather dubious.
However, from a purely technical standpoint there are some real advantages to chucking your mail archives into Gmail. The search feature is second to none (who even needs labels?), the interface beats any webmail (Squirrelmail? come on!) or IMAP reader hands-down, and the conversations feature is a real bonus (Mark Lyon informs me that GMail automatically makes conversations from the messages as they are uploaded with his Gmail loader).
The bottom line is, I don't know whether to upload all my old mail to Gmail yet, and for me the jury's still out until the geeks and the lawyers agree. -

Re:new mail notification sound
This screenshot seems to show that it will show the appropriate date on the messages.
-
new mail notification sound
From the FAQ, it also says that it can play a sound when new mail arrives. And that sound is actually just the Windows New Mail Notification sound in the Control Panel.
And it's been mentioned before, but I still think the Gmail Loader is still a handy utility. I'm migrating a lot of my mail and accounts in to Gmail and this thing was a huge help. -
Best Buy Fired Me As A Customer
Read my story. After being chased into the parking lot for failing to be searched by their door nazi and threatened with police action, Best Buy has guaranteed that I won't be back.

Re:Where to get a LED sign?
I bought the one that's being pounded on through Ebay. I'd recommend NOT buying the Beta Brite. Get the Pro Lite instead.
The Pro Lite has many advanced features and an open protocol that you won't get if use buy a Beta Brite.
The sign runs off of 9v, so it could easily be wired to work in your car. A little bit of work on a controller and you could probably create a simple pre-programmed series of messages accessible by button press in the front. -
