Just Because of Linus TorvaldsI think transmeta is loved by geek community just because of Linus Torvalds connection.
Their first chip Crusoe, although saving power, underperformed badly. And the Efficeon doesn't look fast compared to its rivals. The Efficeon TM 8000 can do 1.1GHz consuming 7W. Intel's Pentium M does 1.7GHz for the same power consumption.
I don't think there's anything particularly cool about this news. It is the same as the discovery of the new planet. There are better ones already out there.

A Profession?"It may be the beginning of a profession. It's being driven not by your computer, but your home network in the house and the increasing complexity -- it's creating a need for this."
When I used to work as a Computer Support at an office, I used run around all day doing this. Sure, I didn't make house calls, but that in itself doesn't make this a new profession. I was just called the "IT Support Guy", not a "Digiticain".
I really hated my job when I was doing IT support. I met these lusers who wanted do weird things with their computers, and then exepected me to support them. Often, I had to stay in the office till 8:00pm.
Thank god now I have a job as a full time developer. I would never want go back to the days of being a "digitician", even if I got paid US$100/her.

10th Rock from the sun10th Planet discovered for the billionth time
That's how the headline should've read. Once all the initial Euphoria dies down, you will find that this is just Media Sensationalism all over again.
(It could be also an Alexander Lavrynov conspiracy. But that's another story)
Depending on how you define a PLANET, our sun has 8,9,1 million, 1 billion, or possibly 1 trillion planets orbiting it. Now if this 10th planet was at least as big as our moon, then I think we have cause for celebration. But the sad fact of the matter is, it is not. It is just lump of rock orbiting earth.
As for the name, Sedna is Andes in reverse. It's almost as if April 1st is a daily ritual in the media circles.

Fear Uncle SamPhysical boundaries mean nothing in cyberspace. Hence, jurisdiction based on such boundaries become meaningless.
I believe that fear of US sanctions have worked well to bring some countries to crack down.
But sometimes this is not enough. It is not a case of hijacking Australian law.
I am usually don't condone the strong arm techniques of the US government. And I do support open source. But Warez is a crime. And it should be punished.
Cross jurisdiction policing is the only way to fight spammers. It is the only way to stop intellectual property theft. But more importantly it is the only way to fight terrorism.
(I do understand that terrorism means different things to different people. But whatever the reasons terrorist have for doing what they do, KILLING INNOCENT CIVILIANS is immoral. Full stop.)

Music Notation and Freedom of ThoughtThe notation used for traditional music in my country, Sri Lanka, is one of the most primitive notations I have ever seen. My friend Jim claims that the notation system used in Europe is far too restrictive. The same way a person's thought processes are controlled by the language, music is also partially constricted by the notation system used.
Jim claims that the traditional music in Sri Lanka has far greater diversity than its western counterpart. Thus a simple music notation system, in his opinion at least, is far better than a complex rigorous one.

Which way are we going? On the one hand, we want to use IP for our voice communications. On the other, we want to use our mobile phone for surfing the web (and installing Linux but that's another story).
So which way are we headed?
It's quite ironic that the internet spread as rapidly as it did because people were able to use internet over dialup, and today, the discussion is about how to replace the existing PSTN architecture with VoIP.
However, I think sooner, or later, people will make ALL there phone calls using internet enabled mobile phones. So what protocol are they going to use? Or is it going to be a mix of protocols, say, if a Canadian were to talk to a friend in Australia?

Re:Nothing new...I am not arguing for the system. I myself am a pacifist, and I would never let US use my skills for violent purposes.
At the same time, if the country is in grave danger, say for example she's being invaded, I would gladly volunteer.
If I have to dodge the draft, I will escape to Thailand, India or Mars

Nothing new...
This has been going on in Israel for decades. As a result, Isreal has produced some of the best computer programmer's in the world. Most of the developers end up in VERY high paying jobs once they are released from military duty.
Of course, if you don't like the draft, you could always migrate to India India.

Linux Has Travelled Far... In The Wrong DirectionLinux has created two classes of people. Those who can, and those who can't
It is not a problem with Linux per se. It is a problem with the culture. The Geeks spend too much time trying to show non-Geeks how uncool using Windows is, instead of trying to spread gospel, so to speak.
Today, the schism between these two classes is so great one views the other with hostility and mistrust. This is not how a society should evolve.
What should be done in the next ten years?
- De-mystify Linux
- Understand that Linux is superior to Windows, but Linux users are not superior to Windows users.
- Stop saying how bad windows is. Say how good Linux is.

Adding injury to insult...Billions of records: The trouble with MATRIX, said Calbrese, is the volume of data it contains, much of which was purchased unbeknown to states by Seisint Inc. Seisint is the Florida information-technology company that developed the idea for MATRIX and landed a $1.6 million contract with that state's Department of Law Enforcement to pilot it.
I am guessing Mr. Ashcroft pay this out of his own pcoket. So this tax payer's money.
Is this going to make you any safer? Doubtful.
Is this going to make you poorer? Yes, Indirectly.
Is this going to make Seisinit richer? Sure.
Is this going to violate your privacy? Most Definitely. So you are basically paying Seisinit to take away your privacy. This is a bit like this story here. But that one is a bit more believable.

Re:Not so fast spankyYep, I totally agree with you. The word nanno makes it a quite sassy, but if it is no stronger than, say NYLON, then, the technology is pretty useless.
You don't need cutlery made of gold to enjoy your food. You don't need clothes made of nanotubes to look cool. Althouth I am sure all the geeks would want to have a nanotube baseball cap.

Dean EdwardsI thought this was something about the democratic nominations, but then saw Kerry was missing.
Flippancy apart, I think using CSS to make IE7 W3C compliant is a really brilliant idea. However, the browser itself is a small part of the equations. Very few websites are W3C compliant. Vast majority of them are geared to a certain browser, depending on the whim and fancy of the designer.
For my part, I run my sites thru Anybrowser to make sure they will render on, well, as the name suggests, any browser.

Eureka! (I think I got a solution)I have been thinking about this. And I have come up with a solution!
- On the very top of the website, have a link that says: "Don't click here if you are human"
- If someone clicks that, IMMEDIATELY ban the IP. (Or maybe have a confirmation page)
- Make sure you exclude the googlebot
;)
I am going to ask my friend at AIT Times to try it out.

Imitation is the cheapest form of flattery!I really hate these kinds of people. I know how much time and effort it takes me to maintain my sites. And the last thing I want is some idiot coming and stealing my ideas.
There isn't a lot you can do to protect yourself when people operate from these safe havens. That's what's most frustrating. The spammers have been doing this for years and have got away with it. And now content stealers.
Will the bandits be able to steal a site like the newspaper here?. This site has only one page, and every other page is rendered dynamically. Maybe this is the solution.

Windows is Easier To Install and UseLike how the guy says here "All my Windows user friends are happily playing games or downloading porn while I am trying to get this piece of excrement to work properly"
This is exactly the problem with Linux. A Linux user spends(well wastes) most of his time just trying to get a simple thing like an office suite to work, where as the Windows user can happily go about doing whatever he wants to do.
Linux is good for the geeks. But for the normal everyday man, Linux is no alternative for Windows.
I am a Linux user: that's my personal preference. But I don't see many of my friends ever using it. Quite a lot of them are very computer literate. Why don't they want to use linux?
simple because they want to use a computer as a tool, and not as a source of frustration.

Content OwnershipThis is yet another classic issue of content ownership. Viacom "owns" the content, which in this case is the channels.
Dish Network does nothing but distribute the contents. They are sort of the middlemen. Usually, in capitalism, the middlemen make a lot of money for little value addition.
However, in this case, the middlemen is getting squeezed from both sides. So what should Dish Network have done? Well they have 2 options
- Stick to their guns. Viacom HAS to find a way to distribute its content
- Passed the additional cost to the consumer. The consumer hasn't got much in the way of competition to chose from
I am suprised that Dish Network did neither

The Future is P2PI believe the true potential of the Internet can only be maximized by using the P2P architecture instead of the currently used Client-Server architecture.
The internet is meant to be a vast distributed network of independent nodes, each interacting with each other. It is a bit like how the neurons in your brain are wired. This way, the internet really becomes a tool of the individual as opposed to a tool of an institution.
[
]The MPIAA's attempt to end P2P is simply luddite. The Film Industry has greatly benefitted from the digital revolution. I have seen quite a few films where 90% of the scenes use CGI.
[
]The MPIAA can't stop the internet's true potential from being realised. Internet is the largest juggernaut that exists right now in the world. The MPIAA is but an ant fighting against a glacier. There's no question as to who will win.

Confucius Say:"Many search engine but few content"The population of China could be 1.2B, but when you compare the amount of literature written in Chinese langauge(s) to that written in English, Chinese comes in a very poor second place. (Read more here)
The point is, there is no point in having a search engine each for every Chinese citizen unless there's enough content to for them to search. I think this is a classic case of cart before the horse.
I think the real solution will be to come up with a single global language.

Space Invading SpamAdvertising, especially of the unsolicited type, has completely swamped cyber space (read here for more infor). Is it going to happen to outer space soon too?
I believe so. There's nothing to preven rogue states that have capabilities to send rockets to space (there are many of them) from blasting into space space-spam.
The light from our cities have completely blotted out the stars. So as far as astronomers are concerned, this scheme doesn't make a big difference. I presume this space-spam will probably be targetting cities anyway.
As for people in the cities, a night in the open could once again be a night under star light, even if the stars are man made, and they spell out pr0n sites.

Phone or PCThe line between handhel PCs and Mobile telephony devices is becoming ever narrower. (Read more here) My Laptop can dial out using a PCMCIA card... does that make my Laptop a Mobile Phone?
My Phone, on the other hand, is far more powerful as a PC compared to the Desktops I used merely 5 years ago. So does that make my Mobile Phone a PC?
I think as this line gets blurrier and blurrier, one shouldn't be amazed at all the cool things the latest Handsets can perform. And as more and more devices are turning out to be more Computer-like, it shouldn't be too far in the future when you can use your Washing Machine to make a phone call.

Solves Corruption IssuesI think one of the biggest problems with the HK police is the corruption levels. Recent surveys have shown that people have very little faith in the HK police, because of endemic corruption.
like the story here.
I guess one can reasonably expect the robot to be corruption free. But I guess they are using pirated software, so even that cannot be asured.
