Re:Does anyone actually use these?
All of these devices (pvp's, the rumored ipod video) seem to me to scream for those little video screens that fold down in front of your eye. Something like this http://www.mp3playerstore.com/stuff_you_need/spec
i al/i-glasses.htm but a little less butt-ugly and perhaps only one screen in front of one eye allowing you to keep the other on your surroundings. I found some at www.eyetop.net but at 500$ it's no wonder nobody is using them. Aren't there any cheaper decent solutions? -
Re:Harddrive?
I would kill for a mp3 player with a CF slot....
Here you go. I want my mother-in-law dead. Make it painful and slow.
Kidding aside, I've had one of these for about 18 months and I'm very happy with it. -
Re:DRM not helpingHmmm. Maybe this is what you're looking for?
There may well be others available from them, I don't have the patience to dig through the nasty site layout today. ^^ -

No I don't work for that site, its just that the Soul Player home page has been under construction for the past year or so... -

Re:All these solutions are way too expensive.
I did some googling, and came up with:
http://www.mp3playerstore.com/buy_it_now__/mp-2003 .htm, and
http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2003Sep/con20030 923021241.htm.
They are both portable cd/mp3/dvd units, but I can't tell from the descriptions weather they only play mp3's from burned cd's or if they will also take a dvd full of mp3's. -
Re:How could they miss the Jens i-bead?
I agree, the I-bead is great! After checking out a lot of other MP3 flash players, I bought an i-bead. Lots of play time, nice size, recharges directly from the USB port, has FM radio, can record conversations, and works as a usb drive. The swiss army knife of MP3 players!
I also saw mention that they are working on ogg vorbis firmware version, thought I'd wait to see if it actually comes out, if this is a feature you need.
If anyone is interested I found the best price here, and no, I am not affiliated in any way, other than to have purchased one from them.

Finding specifications
Is going to be your biggest problem. I've had some EPSON-made TFT lcds from cellphones that even epson refused to give me datasheets to - most cellphone LCDs are custom jobs for each specific manufacturer, and they will not be telling you any information about them.
You are better off trashing the screens you got and ordering some cheap LCDs from a place like http://www.mp3playerstore.com/stuff_you_need/spec
i al/index.html and connecting it to your car mp3/dvd/player whatever. -

Re:What is the point?
I used a multi-compartment fishing box for my LAN system. Just put the Mini-ATX board and DVD+RW drive in the large center area and all the Misc cables in the outer compartments. Also put a $199 7-inch LCD in it for quick gaming and video editing.

Re:Byeu-tee-ful
actually, if you want a good portable home theatre check out the BenQ portable DVD/SVCD/VCD/MP3/Kitchensink player for $150 (US). BTW has anyone used one of these? I am itching to get one but don't know too much about BenQ or mp3playerstore.com.

Re:Innogear has some other interesting products to
Well, you could try to find an adapter that lets you change the side the wire comes out on, so you can flip over the tape. I used to have one like this, back before I got a cd player for my car.
You might also look at the fm broadcast type adapters (like this), although in my experience (about 5 years ago), they don't work very well. Maybe they've improved since then.

Re:This sounds cool, but...
If you'll settle for CD, VCD, and mp3-on-CD, try the Napa DAV310. Hideous colour scheme, ropey interface, but, hey it's a portable VCD player.

Re:So what? This one is around 145 ($190)
Looks identical to this one.

..But how about the BenQ?
http://mp3playerstore.com/stuff_you_need/dvd/benq
. htm
$159 isn't too bad. There's also:
http://mp3playerstore.com/buy_it_now__/mp-2001.htm
for $64.95. Probably horrible shit construction, but not bad for the price.

Re:Frontier Lab's Nex IIAnother Me Too!!!
I used to have a Rio 600... The software is so crappy! Slow and impossible to upload files.
My Nex II review:
Good:- Works on Whatever(tm) OS.
- No DRM.
- Uses CF Cards: cheap and big sizes available (theoricaly up to 2GB).
- Headphone sucks: replaced by Sony MDR-EX70.
- Well, it's MP3... but I feel that the S/N ratio is not that good.
- The Next/Prev button is a Jog dial à la Sony. Can be unuseable in a tight pocket.
- Firmware issues: Not fancy as the Rio 600, wrong display of VBR (display the current rate like WinAmp).
- The battery holder is badly designed, but they last so long (1600mAh Ni-MH = 15-20 hours) that it's not a real issue.
- The USB connector is not standard.
Anyway, we are all switched to the Nex II here, and that keeps going. So far, we've been using that shop: MP3PlayerStore. They deliver in Europe.

Re:Interesting, but...
Time for a plug: The AVC Soul players are both great. Their Riovolt-alike (I think it actually came first, though) is a bit cheaper than Rio's player, and the Soul II is made of pure amazingness in a metal and plastic frame. It's quite literally impossible to make the thing skip.. At least through beating on it and jumping on a trampoline (both tested by me)
Oh, and the Soul II can be bought for $99 USD and will read MP3 and WMA (possibly upgradeable for more) off of any CD format you throw at it.
No, I only wish I was paid for this endorsement. -
Anouther solution for you.
Link to speak out to FM
This little jewel lets you plug it into your mp3 player and then it tranmits to a FM channel. You could use it in this case to transmit your computer sound out to a small fm headphone set. Or in my case I plug it into my mp3 player and then catch the FM station on my car stereo. Perfect little fix without spending a ton of new money. The kicker at work is you could let everyone with 30 feet of you tune into your custom FM station playing your mp3's.
-
Here is anouther solution for you.
Turns speak output into FM channel
At which time you just tune it into your walkman, or radio headphones. Simple solution for mp3 players to your car stereo as well.

Scam warning on building the LCD monitor described
Please note that the monitor suggested for the experiment (at this link), claims to have a resolution of "960(H) X RGB x 240 (V)=230400" which can be a bit misleading if you're not too tech-savy on these numbers.
Note that the horizontal resolution is NOT 960 pixels, but rather 320, since they're counting each RGB pixel as THREE pixels (very sneaky indeed).
So just be warned in case you thought this was the deal of the century. -
Re:I wanna be a Bluetooth Radio Station
Bluetooth? How about FM broadcast, so that anyone around you with a FM radio can tune in?
It already exists, and it's cheap. When I got my SlimX MP3 player, I also got a Link-It which is a personal FM transmitter, with a range of a few dozen feet, weighing a few ounces, and only a few inches in size. You can buy them for about $30 US from various places, including here.
Excellent for listening to MP3s in the car.

if you want to buy one cheaper...
mp3playerstore
has them for cheaper and super low shipping. That's where I got mine, and I see today that they are selling it for even less than before.... my luck I bought mine a month ago. -
Re:MP3 Playersif anyone else knows of any mp3 players that are decently priced and does everything the mpTrip does if not more, please let me know.
